Project Runway Designers Demonstrate Why More Clothes Aren’t Green

Suede's winning Project Runway design

From left: Jerrell’s monstrosity; Why the heck did Joe cut a circle out of the front of his dress and put a crystal border around the hole?; Kelli had a vision for her dress—it just wasn’t a good one. [Photos: Bravo]

On last night’s episode of Project Runway (I’m sorry if you missed it because I told you it was on at 10pm, rather than 9pm—here’s the recap), the contestants had to create cocktail dresses out of eco-friendly fabrics selected by their models. For some reason, the silk/hemp blend that was popular with many of the models seems to come in just two colors, an ugly bronze and a slightly cheap-looking pale good. Apparently, it was very difficult to manipulate—I have never seen hemlines so crooked. Guest judge Natalie Portman was as ladylike as ever, always saying something good about the design before giving her criticisms, and in the end, Suede’s innovative criss-crossing of fabrics won her over. Heidi Klum even said she’s wear the dress if she were 10 years younger. Heidi, you don’t need to shave off 10 years to wear this dress.

To see our favorite designs, keep reading…

Crave: Lancôme’s Ôscillation Mascara

Lancôme's Ôscillation mascara
Lancome-USA.com

Because your lashes are jealous that they never got their own vibrator, this winter Lancôme will introduce Ôscillation, a new mascara that provides a 360-degree coat of product around each and every lash, courtesy of a vibrating brush that pulsates 7,000 times per minute (if only your boyfriend was that skilled….). Sounds kinda scary, we know, but you’ll get used to it – especially after you check out the porn star lashes it delivers. At $34, it’s a relatively inexpensive way to pump yourself – er, I mean your lashes…yeah, your lashes! - up.  [$34, Lancome-USA.com]

Christian Siriano’s Bluefly Collection: Fierce In A Bad Way

Christian Siriano for Bluefly
Bluefly.com

Christian Siriano, last season’s “fierce” winner of Project Runway, is everywhere these days. He’s designed prom dresses for avatars and small collections for Puma, and he’s gearing up to show at New York Fashion week come September. Yesterday, his nine-piece collection for Bluefly, which was part of the PR prize package, went up on the site. For some reason, you can’t buy any of his clothes yet—either that, or they sold out in a day. (They all have a note that says “We’re sorry, this item is not available” next to them.) But as much as I love Christian and all of his hot tranny mess-iness, I don’t think I’d spend almost $400 on this jacket. More photos after the jump… [NY Times, Bluefly]

Stylehiving: Get Joan Holloway’s Mad Men Style

Joan Holloway
AMCtv.com

As if I haven’t said it enough, I heart Mad Men and am on the edge of my seat for this Sunday’s season two premiere. I especially love foxy redheaded Queen Bee of the secretaries, Joan Holloway. Her approach to getting ahead at work may not be ours (but then again, we don’t have to contend with 1960’s sexism!), but her style is hot. Embracing her womanly curves, the character always looks chic and well put together, and getting the look yourself, while staying modern, is actually pretty easy. Check out three options we put together, based on Joan’s fashion from last season, after the jump.

Fashion Slideshow: The Simplest Canvas Sneakers

red canvas Vans sneakers
Karmaloop.com

Now and Then is one of those classic girls-coming-of-age movies. Most of the action takes place in the 1970s, so actresses Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann, and Ashleigh Aston Moore got to wear some pretty sweet clothes. (I hope I’m not the only one to think cut-off jean shorts, plaid shirts, and the most basic sneakers ever are awesome.) Exchange your usual flip-flops for canvas sneaks, and channel your favorite of the four girls—I’m a Samantha (Gaby Hoffmann).

Crave: Botkier’s Gray & Hot Pink Xenia Boots

Xenia boots
Botkier.com

Look, we know they are expensive. Think of these as an ULTIMATE crave, one of those completely impractical but totally drool-inspiring items that you would buy if you were Bill Gates, only a fashionable version. But even if you can’t afford these boots (we can’t), a lesson can be learned from them and that is that gray and hot pink are one of those color/neutral combinations created perfectly by the heavens. If you’ve never paired them, PLEASE DO. [$725, Botkier]

The Ins And Outs Of Project Runway

Natalie Portman on Project Runway
Bravo

While watching Project Runway‘s season premiere and the promo videos for tonight’s episode, we noticed that some of the contestants (and Heidi) have awesome personal style. Others, on the other hand, have questionable style. Now, this doesn’t mean the clothes they design are awful, but I think it does say something about a designer when he sports a rattail. After the jump, we judge Project Runway‘s style…

Beauty Buzz: 10 Rules For Going Red

Red Hair

Hair colorist to the stars, Rita Hazan, dishes out 10 rules for those lookin’ to go red.

1. Never pick a color that looks or sounds fake, like “Cherry Bomb.” Pick colors that are soft and natural.

2. Make sure you change your makeup; going red means making the necessary adjustments to your makeup!

3. As a redhead, it is also important to wear clothes that compliment your hair color. Fiery hair requires less details on clothing, you’re already making a bold statement with that color!

4. In the Fall and Winter, I suggest taking your red to a deeper, richer shade.

Slideshow: Granny Panties

Urban outfitters undies

Granny panties are so hot now for young babes. And unlike their tinier counterparts—bikinis, thongs, and tangas—big ol’ briefs will cover your back instead of riding up it. Styles like boy shorts let us shake our booty freely and bend over without getting a wedgie, upsides everyone can get behind. Since we’re too sexy for dental floss undies, here are some full-on Frisky picks, after the jump…

90210 Nail Polish: The Best Thing To Happen To Your Manicure Since The Invention Of Cuticle Clippers

Beverly Hills 90210

I might have just had a heart attack. According to Nylon, nail polish brand OPI is planning to launch a limited edition collection of colors inspired by the original 90210 cast members. Hold the &%$#ing phone. This is the awesomest thing I’ve heard since they confirmed Brenda was going to be on the spin-off. My brain is already spinning with ideas for shades!

Virgin/Whore A lovely opalescent pink shade which represents Donna Martin’s purity (well, until she gave it up to David) and her reputation for having the trampiest wardrobe on primetime during the ‘90s.
Judgey Wudgey White Stark white for Kelly’s uppity “I’m such an angel” attitude—a perfect match for her cocaine addiction from season five.
Pouty & Pissed A greyish blue for Miss Moody herself, Brenda Walsh.
Euphoria Black Emily Valentine probably totally rocked gothic black nail polish the night she got Brandon to take “euphoria”.

Fashion Slideshow: Totally Wearable Jumpsuits

Romper
Stylehive.com

When I was in nursery school, my mom always dressed me in overalls because they were easy to take on and off. That is until she came home from a shopping trip, and I exclaimed, “Openwalls, openwalls, all the time openwalls. What do you think I a farmer?” Well now, I’m totally loving this trend. NOT overalls, but the more adult, updated version of the jumpsuit because it’s just as easy to wear as a dress. The secret is in the proportions, fit and fabric. And of course accessories play a part—jewelry and a handbag will keep the look more chic, less Air Force flight suit.

Crave: Coral Branch Hoops

Coral Branch Hoops

These coral earrings are both sophisticated and organic-looking. Although they do resemble real coral (your friends will think you took a secret weekend getaway), they’re actually made of painted wood, which keeps them from being too heavy on your earlobes. With their light weight and bright color, they’re the perfect finish to a light and airy summer ensemble. [$43, Pretty Little Thing @ RavinStyle.com]

Crave: Motivational Posters

Get Your Sh*t Together poster
Etsy.com

Posters with inspirational photos and quotes about “success” and “teamwork” don’t make us want to work any harder. No, they just make us think “Who designed this ugly poster?” and “Can’t my dentist hang something more attractive in his waiting room?” Yes, some of us need art that features more direct encouragement (and looks prettier), which is why we’re planning to hang the one that says “Get Your Sh*t Together” in our office. Barbie: Now With Even More Vinyl!

Black Canary Barbie

There’s some stiff competition, but the sluttiest Barbie of all time has just come out: Black Canary. It’s based on the comic book character and conservative Christian groups are pissed because the kids brand doll has been (even more) tricked out in this outfit—a vinyl teddy and knee high boots with fishnets. Does Barbie like it rough? Now, we’re not sure who the market for this S&M Barbie is, but it looks just like Cher from the “If I Could Turn Back Time” video. Patent vinyl is clearly a timeless fashion classic.  [Dlisted]

Crave: Off-The-Shoulder T

Jarbo shirt
Saks5thAve.com

I must admit, I find off-the-shoulder tops a little tricky, as you have to make the choice—bra or no bra? I can safely go with no bra, because I don’t have much in the jumblies department, but larger busted girls either have to go the strapless route (HATE) or embrace having the straps show. The later is why I love this top—the muted charcoal color means that a bra in a bright fun color would almost be like an extra little accessory, rather than a “Oh, oops, look that chick’s BRA is showing"-embarrassment moment. [$75, Jarbo @ Saks Fifth Avenue]

Slideshow: Totally Totable Tote Bags

Lord knows your purse is filled with unnecessary items (oh what, like you think you really do need to carry around those two extra sweaters?). That said, it might be time to think about expansion. If you’re at least going to stuff your sack with extras, you might as well think about upgrading to a tote (or, if you’re die-hard), adding one to your load. Get the most use out of them now by lugging around your summer beach accessories in these friendly and affordable choices. Cute? Totes.

Hat Hair, Meet Your Greatest Enemy

Bang-Go
Bang-Go.com

Bangs are cute and all, but they make wearing hats rather difficult. If you push them back into the hat, then you can’t take the hat off since your hair will be stuck in an awkward style, but if you leave them down, the bangs get plastered onto your forehead. That’s why someone invented the Bang-Go. This combination visor-hat allows your bangs to remain styled while shading your eyes from the sun. Too bad we’re more interested in form than function. The Gap Is Bringing Romance Back

Gap Romantic Collection

I’m the type of shopper who walks into a Gap and sees through the basic necessities to the wonderful fashion possibilities. In fact the last time The Gap had an item that I HAD to have was last year. I’m sure you remember the ruffle-front shirt dress that was all over ads last summer. Well, now, I can say that I’m totally head-over-heels for the Romantic Collection that was recently unveiled in stores and online
