Armored Jeans Protect Against Angry Fashionistas

Armor-like clothing and jewelry seem to be having a moment right now. Denim brand Acne is slated to offer a pair of armored jeans in its spring/summer 2010 lookbook. The polished plates on the knees, thighs, and calves will protect you if your heel catches and causes you to tumble to the sidewalk — or if a jealous friend kicks you in the shins. We’d like to know whether they make your legs sweat, or if the armor is somehow breathable. [via NY Mag] Keep reading »

The Woman Behind Valentino and Chanel

Did you know that designer greats Coco Chanel and Valentino Garavani didn’t achieve fashion icon status on their own? As it turns out, French designer Madeleine Vionnet was more than a little responsible for their massively successful couture feats. Not only did she reshape the fashion world with the “invention” of the bias cut, cowl neck, halter top, and handkerchief dress, she helped create a truly progressive style for women in the early 20th century. You know how French women always look gorgeous, modern, and like they never try too hard? That was her. Keep reading »

Just Because It’s Hot Doesn’t Mean You Need To Be A Hot Mess

But my personal heat-induced nastiness has given me time and incentive to find ways to contain the terribleness. Is The Secretary Of State’s Wardrobe In A State Of Emergency?

When it comes to Hillary’s style choices, it seems she’s in a lose-lose situation. She pioneered the pantsuit revival, but some take issue with her signature outfit. When it comes to the “pants saga,” Newsday says the Secretary of State has been looking especially dowdy as of late: “[Her suits are] looking downright shabby, not a bit flattering these days and well, kind of (yikes) jelly beanish.” Clinton Kelly of “What Not To Wear” slings some mud, too: “There’s no doubt in my mind that a colored pantsuit would end up on the top of the trash can on the show. Colored pantsuits are a little silly, outdated and aging. They don’t look like she’s a leader of the modern world.” What’s a Clinton to do? Keep reading »
