Crazy cat lady? More like sexy catwoman with panache. Lanvin’s new Fall/Winter 2009 campaign stars these pretty kitties alongside model Kristen McMenamy. Clearly not one to fear superstition, photographer Steven Meisel’s cat-styling (put bluntly) and dramatic lighting brings out the vixen vibe of the collection. We can already tell that Lanvin’s fall designs will be stunners with oversized necklaces, über-chic tailored cocktail dresses and daring booties. We have to hand it to the fashion label for doing well with this ad series—it’s high fashion, but also discreetly humorous with those curious wide-eyed felines. Rodarte is designing a line for Target‘s Go International project, allowing us to die happy after purchasing, well, everything the day it’s available on December 20. Because, really, what else is there to live for once you’ve filled your closet with Rodarte for $60 instead of $4,000? We’d sort of resigned ourselves to the idea that Rodarte would always just be a little too cool to be at all accessible, but the 55-piece Target collection plans have proven us wrong and caused us to hold our collective breathe in anticipation.
Rather than focusing on any one specific type of clothing, the line is said to range from knee highs to party dresses to jackets, meaning we could potentially make endless combinations in our online shopping carts as a means of entertaining ourselves. And because Rodarte is Rodarte and, thus, known for their over-the-top-awesome details, you can count on a semi-scaled back interpretation of the same sort of intensity you see in their regular runway shows.
It’s a good day to be Gucci. The Italian luxury house is all over the news today for not one, not two, but three (and a half) different announcements.
- They’re launching a multi-city pop-up store starting this October in New York City. From there the store will move to London, Berlin, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Gucci aficionados will be able to pick from 18 exclusive sneakers — 16 for men and two for women. Hot on the, er, heels of that news was the announcement that DJ and sneaker-addict Mark Ronson will be designing special kicks for the upcoming store. [Elle UK]
- But you don’t have to wait till then to score a pair of Gucci kicks. Go to Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) tomorrow morning for deeply discounted Gucci goodies. The discount shoe chain just revealed that it will be selling shoes, belts, luggage and handbags from Gucci starting (tomorrow) Thursday morning at 9 a.m. for up to 60 percent off at stores nationwide. - And if the publicity and profit they’re generating from all this isn’t enough, please add winning a lawsuit to the mix. A judge ruled in favor of Gucci America today in a suit between the company and Gucci family members, Jennifer and Gemma (ex-wife and daughter of the founder’s grandson, Paolo Gucci). The duo attempted to license their names to sell bed sheets and other products, only to be blocked by today’s court orders. [Bloomberg]
Call it one gorgeous example of wearable art: Club Monaco has just released a new collection of accessories based on the work of American artist Alexander Calder. Well-known for his mixed-media sculptures and kinetic aesthetic (he was the “inventor” of the mobile), it was Calder’s lower-profile accessories work recently exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York that lit a fire under the Club Monaco accessory designers’ a-s-s-e-s (in a good way, that is!). Check out the similarities above (Calder on the left, C. Mon to the right). Both make wonderful use of wire, bold lines and movable pieces. And, as far as I’m concerned, the best bit is that the necklaces are like bib necklaces “lite”—they all feel like the way trendy, heavily beaded and super-adorned bib necklaces out there, but are distinctly lighter and airier. When it comes to new ways of marketing products, businesses are really trying to cash in on social networking. The latest to stake a claim in the internet forums is retailer Lane Bryant, the plus-size mall chain. The new website, called Inside Curve, will allow users to give feedback and interact with the brand, as well as talk with other users. Says a company rep, “Our woman loves fashion, loves color, and insists on being on trend and knowing what’s coming next. Inside Curve is her opportunity to join thousands of women who feel the same way.”
Because digital marketing is still relatively new, taking an initiative like Lane Bryant’s brings up a lot of questions. Can social networking actually help your brand and business? Does it defeat the purpose of an online community if it’s created solely by sponsored content? And more specifically, for women: Is Lane Bryant attempting to mold out a better space for plus-sized women, as skinny fashion networks outnumber full-figured forums?
Oh, Zara. For years now, the store has worn the crown when it comes to churning out retail collections inspired by what we see on the runway. Rest assured that this season is no different. Look closely at their Fall 2009 offerings and you will spot a flurry of faux designer gear. Is it just us, or do those big shouldered blazers look a lot like Balmain’s iconic jackets? Those slouchy trousers? Mighty similar to pants from Chloe’s latest collection. Oh, and the feather trimmed skirt? Didn’t Louis Vuitton debut the same thing on their Spring/Summer 2009 catwalk? Topshop is joining forces with German-born designer Markus Lupfer once again, hot on the heels of the success of his previous eight collections with the retailer. This time around, Lupfer is offering his iconic sweaters in a lightweight fabric, emblazoned with oversized sequin images. There’s a pineapple, parrot, heart, bow, and lips to make pop-art lovers smitten, including the Rolling Stones fan. These sweaters will definitely help transition your wardrobe from summer into fall. And don’t be shy about wearing sequins in the day because sparkling is totally appropriate during the daylight hours now. But looking like Vanna White isn’t, so I’d pair these with simple leggings or skinny or straight leg jeans.
