Trendspotting: Fashion Spandex?

Spandex shapewear doesn’t have such a great rep, previously making appearances in bad ’80s music videos and being the culprit behind embarrassing hookup moments. But things might be turning around. DKNY is about to give the oh-so-trendy Spanx a run for its money by launching a new line of tummy-tucking underwear that is meant to be a bit cooler, thanks to neon pink and blue colors. Grazia has pointed out that maybe there’s a trend beginning here, since the presentation of Topshop‘s “Unique” collection was filled with workout-like looks—sports bra-like bandeau tops were paired with Spandex biker shorts under jean shorts. The First Lady’s Feet Are Put To The Test … What’s Your Pain Threshold For Heels?

Last night the Obamas hosted a dinner for the G20 summit, and, naturally, Michelle was expertly styled. Reports The New York Times:

“Mrs. Obama [wore] a taupe, pink and green patterned cocktail dress with straps. Pink patent leather two-inch heels. Hair pulled back in a full, bouffant faux-ponytail. Long pearl necklace, pearl earrings. No stockings.”

Aside from the fact that Michelle Obama hasn’t fully transitioned to her fall wardrobe (no tights!), we were more struck by her shoes … Keep reading »

Pam Anderson Is (Still) A Lovable Hot Mess

Vivienne Westwood isn’t the only designer who is looking to Pamela Anderson as a muse. Heatherette designer and legendary NYC club kid Richie Rich, seen here in skates (you’ve heard of models falling, now designers are wiping out, too), teamed up with Pam to create an eco-line called A.Muse. The two decided to debut it during New Zealand Fashion Week, and Pam really went out of her way to show the entire collection, including her ass cheeks, after the jump! Keep reading »

We Knew Wedding Dresses Were Expensive, But Half A Mil?

While this $501,640 dress isn’t the most expensive wedding gown we’ve met, it’s certainly up there. Besides yards and yards of platinum-colored tulle, the dress includes 10 feet of platinum chain, 33 carats of diamonds, 145.84 carats of aquamarine, white keshi pearls, and a white south sea pearl pendant. The dress is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Tutera, who hosts “My Fair Wedding,” and jewelry designer Erica Courtney. Call us cheap, but we don’t get it. Who needs platinum chain on a piece of clothing they’re going to wear one time? Especially one that’s not even cute. [Luxist] Keep reading »

Major Tool Graduates From “Tool Academy” To Fashion Designer Tool

One of our favorite style bloggers, Jill at Trend de la Creme, uncovers the horrifying news that Shawn Southern, otherwise known as “Loud Mouth Tool” on the first season of VH1′s “Tool Academy,” has his own fashion line. For those of us demented enough to watch “Tool Academy” (me!), you may remember the North Carolina native as the shouty, punchy big guy who had multiple girlfriends. Also, he has a tattoo over his wang that reads: “Kung Fu Hero.” (No, I did not make that up.) In any case, now he has a clothing line of sorts. Jill deems it a “Kung Fu Zero.” The garments include skull underpants, suicidal robots, and other random, stupid crap. Read Jill’s hilarious take here. Keep reading »

What’s Next In Modeling? The Full-Figured, The Octogenarian, And The Unshaved!

Does this look like a runway model to you? Maybe! Sick of looking at runways overcrowded by blond, Caucasian, skinny models? Pipeline has a terrific post on the latest trends in fashion model looks. The new professional coat hangers are girls with way more curves, men and women in their sixth, seventh, and eighth decades of life, burly dudes with body hair, and boys who aren’t afraid to wear dresses. Pipeline says: “From scary, hairy, husky dudes (thanks Vivienne Westwood!) to buxom gals in super-short minis (à la Mark Fast), this new model trend is sure keeping the typical shows a lot more interesting!” We love all the diversity. Check out the rest! [Pipeline] Keep reading »

Wacky Shoes Abound!

Crazy shoes. They’re all the rage! Last week, we admired Rodarte‘s urban glamazon heels that could have been made from leftover parts found at the local mechanic’s. Yesterday in Milan, Miuccia Prada debuted a series of Lucite and plastic chandelier shoes with a rainbow of heel colors and swinging crystals. Equipped with what looks to be a velcro strap, the Prada footwear looks somewhat comfy — at least they didn’t send the models tumbling, as did Rodarte’s Nicholas Kirkwood stilettos. After the jump, two more highlights of the over-the-top heels trend! Keep reading »

Is It Even Possible To Look Cute While You’re Riding A Bike?

Got the bike. Looking awesome while riding it? Not so easy. Rarely is there any gear for bikers that doesn’t look like Lance Armstrong’s hand-me-downs—i.e., it’s all way too serious stuff in not the best colors. Where’s the fun in that? Normally, I’d say go with skinny jeans, flats, and hope for the best, but after reading about a new line of clothes made explicitly (and expertly) for bikers, I’ll reconsider. Check these two ladies out: cycling enthusiast Amy Fleuriot and her friend, Sarah Buck, a former bike courier (bike messengers are no joke, people). Their company is called Cyclodelic and the two recent design grads are trying to make biking a bit more fashionable. Get a look at some of their genius innovations, after the jump. Keep reading »

Fashion Week Runway Moments That Channel Disney Characters

No matter how grown up you are now, don’t even try to tell us you weren’t full-on obsessed with at least one Disney character way back when. The thing is, you hit your teens and all of a sudden it was “weird” that you were still dressing up as Little Red Riding Hood. (Or so I was told.) But a handful of designers are clearly sick of the stigma attached to dressing like you’ve just left the set of a Disney movie. Designer Christopher Kane, for example, marched the perfect little gingham dress down the runway, channeling “Alice in Wonderland” but cooler. Refinery29 rounded up a few more look-alikes, after the jump. [Refinery29] Keep reading »
