The Fashion Peacekeepers: Shenae Grimes

Sometimes we feel like Us Weekly‘s “The Fashion Police” and other similar style critics can be a tad harsh. Also, they tend to have these really boring, conservative styles and we have to wonder what their real fashion credentials are. (Case in point: US Weekly‘s “Top Cops” include random comedian Stefanie Novik and Chet Cannon of “The Real World, Brooklyn.” When did they ever go to design school!?) Today, we feel the need to rescue “90210” star Shenae Grimes from lockdown over at E!, where her outfit has officially been dubbed “heinous.” Sure, maybe not everyone is enough of a risk taker to rock leather, a floral print and lacy tights at the same time, but she looks healthy, happy and cute, the outfit is totally appropriate for a young chick to wear to an edgy Nylon mag party in Hollywood, and the nods to the ’80s are bang on trend. How Much Do We Love This i-D Cover?

A few months ago both Chanel Iman and Sessilee Lopez tweeted about a “major” moment in fashion and a surprise cover. That should have been clue enough for some folks to guess. Now the secret is out: The two young models, along with Jourdan Dunn and Arlenis Sosa, grace the cover of i.D magazine’s September issue. The iconic photo features all four girls with corset-inspired tops, figure-hugging skirts, matching black gloves and shimmery makeup. It was shot in London by Emma Summerton and styled by i-D fashion director, Edward Enninful. Besides featuring four of the hottest models of the moment in one sitting, this issue is distinctive for yet another reason: It is the only non-urban magazine to opt for women of color on its September cover. London Fashion Scene Invaded By Drag Queens

Girl, the drag queens are coming! On Sunday, Sept. 6, while New York fashion editors will undoubtedly be laying out their neat little wardrobes for the coming Fashion Week, those in London will be slipping into sequin gowns and lamé hammer pants. It’s Bistrotheque’s Annual Drag Ball at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House! The evening includes such performance categories as “International Diva in a Leading Role,” “London Fashionista at the Opera,” and “Pushy Mother with Kids at a Ballet Audition.” (Priceless.) And with a panel of judges that reads like a who’s who of the Brit style scene—Love magazine’s Katie Grand, designers Henry Holland and Roksanda Ilincic, to name a few—the competition is sure to be fierce. W Magazine Pulls A Zoolander Derelicte

Leave it to a fashion magazine. In any other medium, exploring homelessness would entail in-depth interviews, following up with local politicians and including a quote or two from national charity organizations. For W magazine, it meant draping model Sasha Pivovarova in tissue paper from Dior, paper bags from Prada and odds and ends from Chanel. W gets brownie points for an interesting concept and — per usual — beautiful imagery. But are we the only ones who think a chic twist on homelessness is in poor taste? We never get tired of checking out the cool New Yorkers on The Sartorialist and the insanely hip, young jet-setters at Lookbook.nu. Now we have a new one to add to our list, and it’s right in your backyard. Marc Jacobs & Chairlift Do Bizarre, Low-Budget Videos For Saks

Chairlift is a band we love. Marc Jacobs is a designer we adore. Yet, we’re a bit puzzled by the promotional videos they worked on together for Saks Fifth Avenue. The videos feature the three members of Chairlift clad in Marc Jacobs’ fall collection, wandering around Williamsburg, Brooklyn like drugged-out hipsters. In each montage, set to Chairlift tunes, the sequences are clearly meant to look ironically low-budget with cheesy, porno-like close-ups on handbags and washed-out lighting. The effect comes off as completely bizarre. In the first, “Making an Entrance,” the gang wanders around a warehouse block doing yoga poses and attempting handstands. In “Drawing Attention,” the band heads to the roof of a building to look cool while drawing on the walls and taking pictures of each other to post on their blogs and MySpace pages. The craziest one, however, has to be “For the Love of Tacos,” above, where the Marc Jacobs-chic crowd goes to this, like, divey bodega for tacos that, of course, was totally rad before all the hipsters came and made it a party spot. Lauren Bush Wants To Feed The World

OK, jaded fashion lovers, listen up. We’re all tired of hearing about designers who donate two percent of the proceeds from a random T-shirt to some backwater pet charity in Papua New Guinea. (Note to all publicists: We see right through you.) But Kenneth Cole and Lauren Bush have collaborated on a Feed Health backpack that’s actually going to make a difference. For each of the $125 bags sold, another one will be donated to a health care worker in sub-Saharan Africa. The bag will be filled with medical supplies, like syringes and bandages. Condoms. H&M Gets The (Winter) Party Started

We know summer isn’t over yet, but the style masterminds over at H&M are already thinking ahead when it comes to our holiday party wardrobes. They’ve debuted looks from the Fall/Winter 2009 Party collection and it looks pretty festive to us. The line ranges from outerwear and dresses to shoes and bracelets, and overall, the line is pretty eclectic since no two items seemed to be designed with the same theme in mind. But one thing ties the whole collection together: boldness. You see it in the uber-chunky necklaces, the sexy structured dresses and champagne-colored faux fur jackets. Every piece makes a strong statement, and we hear it loud and clear: We are young, we are chic, and we don’t care about hypothermia. [Stylistic] Keep reading »
