Reading Has Never Looked So Good

Having spent most of my childhood getting teased about my book dork-ery by relentlessly obnoxious brothers, I’ve developed a bit of a complex about reading. I like it and totally don’t mind spending a night in reading over a night out partying, but while a lot of new titles have awesome cover art and a general air of vague coolness, the classics are generally hopelessly dorky looking. Or they were, anyway.

Now I can tote around a tome with an amazingly illustrated image. The new covers are courtesy of Penguin Books and Ruben Toledo (husband of Michelle Obama’s favorite designer Isabel Toledo), and they’ll be gracing the covers of everything from Wuthering Heights to Pride and Prejudice in celebration of Fashion Week.

Are Certain Fashion Designers & Companies Boob Friendly—And Others Not?

This past weekend I was telling a friend that I was headed to J.Crew this week to try to on wedding dresses. I know without trying one gown on, with a dress that emotionally loaded, I’ll never find something that makes me go OMFG-this-is-the-ONE. I’m too picky, and even though I’ve been known to spend a ridiculous $500-plus on a cocktail dress, there’s something about dropping thousands on a dress I’ll surely only wear once that makes me cringe. My friend replied, “Oh, I love their dresses but have you seen my boobs? J.Crew dresses just aren’t made for people with bigger chests, so I could never wear their bridal gowns.” And after a split second of thought, I mentally agreed, Yeah, she’s 100 percent dead-on with that. Do You Want To Know Where Your Sweater Comes From?

Most meat-eaters prefer to not think about the previous life of their duck confit or the origins of their rack of lamb. Similarly, most of us don’t put too much thought into where our clothes really come from (we can’t advocate the use of fur, but do admit to wearing a bit of leather). Maybe that’s because most fabrics seem non-threatening. But now you might wince the next time you wear your winter wool sweater. Liz Jones of the Daily Mail explains that the wool in your clothing probably came from sheep raised for slaughter, not garments, as wool is now a devalued fabric.

Jones took the case one step further by taking in some sheep headed for the slaughterhouse, and making her own sweater (pictured) from the pets. Umm…

Ronan Gregory, the guy behind Ronan, Edun and Loomstate, just teamed up with Barney’s CO-OP to put out a line of eco-friendly Keds that feature rather adorable prints and lace-less construction. But as darling as the shoes themselves are, the promo video may be even cuter. Admittedly, we’re not entirely sure what a naked, frolicking girl has to do with gym shoes, but we’re feeling this Loomstate for Keds promo anyway. We’re liking it so much, in fact, that we’re willing to make some allowances for the gratuitous skinny girl nudity and chalk it up to some sort of homage to nature. Yeah, anyway. Keep reading »

Vogue Australia Celebrates 50 With Illustrated Covers

While Anna Wintour has been at work making her magazine “recession-friendly,” the international Vogue editions have been heading in an artsier direction lately with innovative collaborations and special editions all around. Now, Vogue Australia has also decided to do something a bit different. For its 50th anniversary, the magazine is putting out a commemorative issue (September 2009) featuring the work of famous fashion and celeb illustrator, David Downton. In four separate covers, Downton sketched Cate Blanchett in vintage styles that recall the days before photography. It’s a great reminder of the history behind the magazine, as well as fashion’s journey through the years. Vogue Australia also seems to have a solid marketing strategy: While the issue will be sold in a gold box as a limited edition, the price is a mere 12.95 Australian dollars, which is about 11 USD. For the ceremony announcing her as the new face of Mango, Scarlett Johansson rocked a super sleek style that had a bit of a sexy edge. Scarlett paired a flutter sleeve satin top with a waist cinching black skirt- both from Mango. She completed the look with a funky pair of snakeskin shoes, gold bangles, and a large ring on her index finger. This ensemble perfectly complemented Scarlett’s incredible figure so keeping the accessories to a minimum was definitely a wise move- it would have just been overkill otherwise.
