The Boob Tube: Must-See TV For The Week Of June 28, 2010

It might take you another day or so to recover from last night’s slightly traumatic episode of “True Blood.” But when you are ready to turn on the television again, there are lots of exciting programs waiting for you. (And, yes, I am starting a campaign to bring back the word ‘programs.’) For example, the season premieres of “Make It Or Break It” and “Intervention.” And a new sitcom, “Louie,” that looks like it could be on par with “The Office” and “How I Met Your Mother.” And if that doesn’t float your boat, perhaps I could interest you in another delicious serving of “Friday Night Lights?” After the jump, previews, teasers, and more. Is “Toy Story 3″ Sexist?

toy story

Toy Story 3” has been receiving nothing but praise. It’s topped the box office for two weeks in a row and has pulled in $226 million so far. Not to mention that critics are lauding it as the saving grace in a horribly blah summer movie season. But Ms. magazine is not too happy about the movie’s success. The feminist publication recently posted an article on their blog about the sexism and negative stereotypes in the film. Natalie Wilson, who wrote the piece, admits that the kids’ movie is “fresh” and “clever,” but she also claims that it contains a few too many misogynistic and homophobic jokes for comfort. Frisky Q&A: Matt & Kim On Why Making An Album Is Like Having A Baby

Last weekend, I headed to the sun-drenched beaches of Santa Monica for Pacsun’s Summer Solstice Beach Ballyhoo for music (Ra Ra Riot! Neon Trees!), hot skater boys (Tony Hawk!), and all the glory that is an open bar. But the highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly a performance by the infectiously fun twosome Matt & Kim. Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino met while attending Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute in 2004, and have since put out two albums that evoke summers in their neighborhood—running through sprinklers in the park by day and jumping up and down in dark bars by night, holding a cheap beer, while the walls around you drip with condensation. Their performances, like their music, are tirelessly upbeat. If you can get through a song without at least a head bob and a foot tap, it’s probably time for a vacation. During their Ballyhoo set, Kim actually sang while being held upright, crowd-surfing. Yeah, it was pretty fantastic. I had a chance to catch up with the band at their hotel to talk about their inspirations, Erykah Badu ganking their style, and why they’re so adorable. OK, I didn’t have a chance to address the last part, but they really are awfully cute. Keep reading »

Rumor Alert: Has MTV Canceled “The City”?

Oh noes, Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo might have lost their fake jobs! Fashionista.com is reporting that MTV is canceling “The City” after this season. Rumor has it, MTV is booting Palermo off the network because she was cutting into Snooki’s pickle budget. Just kidding! We don’t know why “The City” would be canceled or if the rumor is even true. Frankly, we’re surprised the “Hills” spin-off lasted this long: Whitney Port has always been très boring, non? The only character we’ll miss is Kelly Cutrone, the People’s Revolution fashion PR girl. Thankfully, Kelly’s got her own show, “Kell On Earth,” on Bravo — but considering she’s one of Whitney Eve‘s biggest advocates, this won’t be the last we’ve seen of Whitney yet. Palermo, however, can crawl back from whence she came. [Fashionista] Keep reading »

Video: Cowboy Hip Hop Is Where It’s At

I guess this cowboy hip-hop dance craze never caught on the way it should have. I say it’s not too late. I’ve been doing the country version of the running man and the Roger Rabbit for years now and didn’t even know it. Who’s with me? Let’s bust a move. [BuzzFeed] Keep reading »

Landon Donovan May Be A Baby Daddy

When Landon Donovan kicked that penalty shot in the World Cup match against Ghana on Saturday to tie up the game, I have a feeling most women in the U.S. would have swooned and dropped trough for him immediately. (Sigh, if only Ghana hadn’t scored again and won the game.) Besides being an awesome soccer player, Donovan is pretty darn good-looking. Does he remind anyone else of Jack on “Dawson’s Creek“? Anyhoo, apparently, Donovan didn’t have any problems finding paramours when he was separated from wife Bianca Kajlich and playing in the U.K. last winter. And rumor has it that a woman has told a British tabloid she is pregnant with Donovan’s baby.
