Is TV Helping To De-Stigmatize Mental Illness?

It’s the time of year when production companies start working on pilots for shows they hope will be picked up to air next year. One such show is “The Quickening,” which will be written by the awesome Jennifer Salt of “Nip/Tuck” and will star the lovely Radha Mitchell as a bipolar detective whose medication stabilizes her mood swings but damages her otherwise brilliant talent for solving the crime. I gotta say that, lately, I’m noticing a lot of shows where the protagonist struggles with mental illness, and I think it’s pretty amazing since it can help people understand and be more accepting of the wide variety of mental illnesses out there. Women Love Vampires Because We Want … Gay Men?

Further proof some men don’t know jack about women: Esquire magazine says chicks go bananas for vampire love stories because we lust after … wait for it … gay guys. Gay guys don’t want to be with us the way vampires can’t be with us and you know us ladies: we just want what we cannot have.

No, I’m not buying it either. Keep reading »

Jake The Pilot To Be The New “Bachelor”

Hey “Bachelor” fans, in case you weren’t one of the 15 or 20 people who watched the “Dancing With The Stars” results show last night, you may have missed the announcement that ABC has selected jilted Jake the Pilot™ as the new Bachelor. You may remember Jake from last season’s “Bachelorette” — although you’d certainly be excused if you didn’t — as the boring bachelor Jillian deemed “too perfect.” She gave him the boot mid-season, but he came back a week or two later dressed in his Pilot’s best to warn Jillian about dangers of cheatin’ Wes. Noble, maybe. Dull as a meatloaf dinner, definitely. What about Reid?? God, even dorky Kpytok-whatever-the-hell-his-name-was would have been a more interesting choice. Oh well, maybe this is the season I finally find a hobby to occupy my Monday nights (I’ve been thinking about flamenco class!). What about you? Will you be watching when the “Bachelor” debuts in January? [via Popwatch]

NBC Takes The “Glee” Out Of Thanksgiving Day Parade

Could network wars be responsible for crushing the hearts of Gleeks, “Glee” fans, across America? The popular Fox show won’t be rolling down Central Park West this November, as NBC has reportedly put the kibosh on their performance plans at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

According to an internal Fox memo, the network and Macy’s were “already discussing wardrobe and choreography” and picking out a float for the “Glee” cast to ride on when the store told them the offer would have to be rescinded because “it did not want the Fox series…getting a big fat plug on NBC’s parade broadcast,” according to The Washington Post. A network insider claims the department store had worked out the deal before consulting NBC. Keep reading »

If Blow-Up Dolls Could Talk …

Blow-up dolls have feelings, too, you know. They’re not simply inanimate objects that lonely men can have their way with. At least that’s the premise behind the Japanese film “Air Doll.” Based on a manga, “Air Doll” tells the story of an inflatable sex doll who magically comes to life and explores the world after her owner leaves for work each day. She even starts dating a man she meets in a video rental store. The movie, which was shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, isn’t available on Netflix quite yet, but we’ve already added it to our queue in anticipation of its U.S. release. Keep reading »

Could You Read A Book A Day For A Year?

Whenever I’m going through an existential crisis, reading a great book usually helps. Clearly, 46-year-old Nina Sankovitch of Connecticut understands the profound satisfaction that can be found from sitting down with a good read. Kelly Osbourne Is Cuter And More Confident Than Ever On “Dancing With The Stars”

Kelly Osbourne has majorly grown on us since her days as a sort of bratty kid on “The Osbournes.” Now that she’s on “Dancing with the Stars,” we’re getting to see a side to Kelly we never knew existed! Last night, she admitted to loving musicals and being disappointed that she didn’t get to play the lead in “Chicago” on stage because she “couldn’t dance.” Watch the clip above to hear how “DWTS” has done wonders for Kelly’s confidence, then watch her and partner Louis Van Amstel do the Charleston — and prove the people who said she couldn’t dance wrong — after the jump.
