I am going to smack the next idiot who tells me that raising her children full time — by which she really means going to Jivamukti classes and pedicure appointments while the nanny babysits — is her feminist choice.

This is how writer Elizabeth Wurtzel begins a piece on TheAtlantic.com entitled titled “1 Percent Wives Are Helping To Kill Feminism And Make The War On Women Possible.”

You know, subtle.

And it goes downhill from there. Keep reading »

We’re broke, we’re unemployed, we owe student loans, we’re living off our parents, we have degrees in things like English and Philosophy, we’re unprecedentedly narcissistic, and as if we couldn’t get any more charming, all the money we do have we spend on luxury goods: welcome to Generation Y, bitches! The millennial epoch, composed of those born between 1980 and 2000, is the fastest-growing demographic of those who purchase luxury goods. Consumers of this generation increased spending on premium fashion and services by 33 percent in 2011, and while boomers remain the foremost buyers of luxury items at 50 percent, millennials have altered their habits drastically in the past year alone. What Are You Doing With Your Tax Return?

Money 101
10 tips for traveling on the cheap! Read More »

I am celebrating today because I got my tax return in the mail and used it to pay off every cent of credit card debt that was hanging over me like a dark cloud. I won’t say how much, but it was in the thousands. I bought a new computer, had some doctor’s bills and before I knew it, the debt was piling up as it tends to to. I am pleased to announce that as of this morning, I am 100 percent credit card debt free for the first time in over a year. And I plan to stay that way. It’s weird, but I feel lighter somehow. Debt really weighs down your spirit. Right now, mine is carefree and doing the River Dance. Woot woot! So Friskyverse, I want to know how you are planning to allocate your tax return funds. I hope someone out there is already debt free and using the dough to buy something completely frivolous, like a mini pony or something. I want to live vicariously through you, please. Today’s Lady News: Young Women Want Career & Money Moreso Than Men, Study Claims

Today's Lady News photo
  • Young women ages 18 to 34 want a career and to earn good money moreso than their male counterparts do, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. The recent study says two-thirds of women prioritize advancing their career, while 15 years ago it was closer to half of all young women who felt that way. Watch out, boys! [Los Angeles Times]
  • Oklahoma’s “fetal personhood” bill, which would have granted personhood status to fertilized eggs, has failed in the state Legislature. “Fetal personhood” bills would criminalize all abortion and IVF treatments. [Reuters]
  • Tennessee’s House of Representatives has advanced an anti-abortion bill that would allow prosecutors to charge someone for harming an embryo — the cells that form into a fetus up to eight weeks after conception. Harming a “viable fetus” — as in, an eight-month’s pregnant woman who is murdered — is already illegal in the state, so this current bill is a clear attack on abortion rights by trying to define an embryo as a “person.” [Think Progress]

Another day, another bombastically link-baity piece on the Internet to get everyone’s feathers ruffled!

Today’s linkbait comes courtesy of The New York Daily News op-ed page, in which writer S.E. Cupp hammers away at Democratic consultant Hilary Rosen for a foot-in-mouth comment she made on “Anderson Cooper 360″ last week, that stay-at-home  mother (SAHM) of five Ann Romney “never worked a day in her life.” Rosen later clarified that she meant Ann shouldn’t be her millionaire husband’s earpiece for issues on women and the economy; alas, her point was lost by inelegant phrasing.

The rudeness of Rosen’s comments were chastised by everyone from First Lady Michelle Obama, members of the president’s staff, and feminists such as myself. But that fact has been conveniently ignored by S.E. Cupp. Instead, she wants to pat Ann Romney on the back for “marrying up,” writing:

[W]hile liberal women may praise Ann for (at least) getting herself an education, where is the praise for Ann’s best decision of all — to marry well? Keep reading »

Equal Pay Day Ryan Gosling photo

Ryan Gosling memes never get old — especially not on Equal Pay Day, a date symbolizing the extra days a woman will have to work in 2012 in order to earn, on average, the same amount as a male counterpart did in 2011. You know, that “equal pay for equal work” stuff that feminists are always blabbing about. You can learn all about the pay gap between men and women right here … but I’m warning you, it won’t be as easy on the eyes as The Gos. [The Daily MusePay-Equity.org]
