Oh, hey there. Guess what day it is? April 17th! No, it’s not my birthday. It’s Tax Day! Alright, so maybe this isn’t an occasion for excitement and joy, but whether you like it or not, taxes must be paid by midnight tonight (unless you are filing an extension or giving the finger to Uncle Sam like these celebs). With that in mind, we’ve compiled some straightforward advice for you tax-filling slackers who waited until the very last second to file — like yours truly. Keep reading »

I was flipping through Lucky magazine this weekend (in the bath, actually! Amelia would be proud) and saw a gorgeous purse that literally made me gasp. The strap on my current purse broke recently, and this was the perfect new bag for me. The only problem? It costs $269, which is about $200 more than I usually spend on a bag. As my thoughts rushed toward justification of such a huge purchase, I realized my birthday is coming up in a couple weeks. Eureka! I thought, This could be a birthday present for myself! I’ve never bought myself more than a cupcake to celebrate my birthday, but in recent years a lot of my friends have started getting gifts for themselves–everything from jewelry to vacations. I think your birthday can be a good excuse to treat yo self, but it’s also an easy way to justify overspending. So, what do you all think of this idea? Have you ever bought a birthday gift for yourself?

My husband is my best friend in the world. I’m sure I’ve caused several cavities just by saying so, and can hear a few of you making gagging noises through my computer screen right now. But hey, it’s true. He’s amazing and he understands me better than anyone. He’s the only person who doesn’t annoy the crap outta me after long periods of time, and he laughs at all of my jokes. He’s also totally hot and you should all be extremely jealous.

That said, I have absolutely no desire to share my spending habits with him.  Keep reading »

My husband is like a child when it comes to giving gifts. He shops big – both big price tags and big impact — and he’s usually even more excited about giving me my gifts than I am about getting them. They’re always really nice – for my 30th birthday I got an iPad – and he literally can’t wait to give them to me. (I got the unwrapped iPad weeks before my actual birthday.) I, on the other hand, gravitate towards thoughtful gifts with smaller price tags. The money he puts behind my (often bling-y) gifts caught me off guard earlier in our relationship, and it’s taken me almost six years to convince him that every holiday doesn’t require an over-the-top gift. For reasons unbeknownst to me, Business Insider has published a piece about a young woman in New York City who did something unethical, tempting and all-too-easy: she used the online dating site Match.com to score around $1,200 in free dinners paid for by dates. Keep reading »

Money 101: Do Good With Charitable Donations – And Get Deductions, Too!

The onslaught of tax return documents starting arriving in my mailbox a few weeks ago — from banks and places of employment (I had a few last year) — and I began to feel the familiar and perennial angst; tax day is coming! I stuck most of them in a pile to be looked at later, you know, like in March. But when I spotted a letter from my church the curiosity got to me. What I didn’t expect was to be so disappointed in myself. It listed my total donation from the past year and it was paltry! Who the heck was I donating more to – my local bartender and hair colorist?

Going forward, I resolve to donate more, but I also want to find more charitable organizations that appeal to my passions and interests. Plus, I feel incredibly guilty for using those free address labels from Smile Train and not sending a check back. For some tips on how to align charitable giving with personal financial goals and be prepared for tax time, The Frisky reached out to finance expert and author Manisha Thakor. Keep reading »
