What’s The Most Unusual Way You Stay In Shape?

We all have some little daily habit that actually contributes to our fitness, whether we’re aware of it or not. I had a housemate in college who would squeeze his butt cheeks every time he took a step, which resulted in him having the most rock hard, pert ass I’d ever squeezed. (He was gay and my manhandling was purely to test the end results.) Personally, I combine my rampant OCD with my desire to stay marginally in shape — I obsessively clean my apartment every other day. You have no idea how many calories vacuuming and scrubbing the bathroom floor with a toothbrush burns! What about you? Do you stick a poison sticker on your roomie’s double stuffed Oreos or you take the stairs two at a time, racing those on the adjacent escalator? Whatever it is, share your little tidbit with the rest of us in the comments. Keep reading »

How I Learned To Play Soccer And Love The Ball

I am not what you call graceful and athletic. When I told my friends/parents/significant other that I was joining a co-ed soccer team they laughed. I mean, my mom laughed. In my face. And my mom is a professional guidance counselor and is aware of what laughing in your kid’s face does to their self-esteem. So, yeah, not many people expected that I would stick with it. But three years and nine seasons later, I am actually a soccer team captain. And I couldn’t be happier. Keep reading »

Fearlessly Fit: Amelia Forces John DeVore To BOING With Kangoo!

A few months ago, I posted a Quick Pic of Kourtney and Kim Kardashian bouncing along a beach boardwalk with weird boots on their feet, which I then dubbed “pogo jogging.” Further investigation revealed they were wearing “Kangoo Jumps,” shoes worn while participating in some new fangled fitness fad out of, uh, Europe or something. Being that I’m a gal who likes to skip, jump, and gallop around for no reason, this seemed like the ideal workout to try out for our “Fearlessly Fit” series. And because working out is so much more fun when you’re doing it with a buddy, I dragged along my brother-from-another-mother, our own Mind of Man, John DeVore. Keep reading »

What’s Your Favorite Song To Work Out To?

As I’m sure you’ve noticed in the two “Fearlessly Fit” videos I’ve done so far, I’m not what you’d call a fitness buff. I get my yoga on (sometimes) and I’m definitely game to try new types of fitness activities — like hip-hop dance or anti-gravity yoga — but strenuous physical activity that involves, um, clothing has never really been my thing. However, when it does come to those activities that do get my heart racing, I need music to pump me up and push me to continue on past the point of wanting to throw in the towel and eat a cheeseburger. For example, when I decide I’m going for a run I need some seriously catchy pop music on my iPod to motivate me and help me keep my pace. The song that does it for me every time? Britney Spears’ “Gimme More.” What can I say? I don’t want to disappoint the woman who giggles and says, “It’s Britney, bitch.”

So tell me — what songs get you pumped up and motivated while working out? I’ll make a playlist of all your suggestions next week! [Photo: iStockphoto] Keep reading »

How Pole Dancing Changed My Life

I sat on a purple mat wearing black yoga pants and a long-sleeved shirt across from 10 other women whose faces I couldn’t quite make out. The studio was dark, except for a few fake flickering candles lining the walls and two red-lit lamps. I looked around and counted four armchairs and fives poles. What had I gotten myself into? As a “liberated” 21st century professional woman, what was I doing in a room filled with a bunch of lap dance chairs and stripper poles? I reminded myself that I was there to help my friend Jennifer win a pole, but I was starting to reconsider. I could just leave, duck out quietly. Then I heard the teacher say, “Let’s start on our backs, and feel your breath.” There was no way out now. Keep reading »

I Lost 10 Pounds By — Well, I’m Not Entirely Sure

Every so often, I’ve written a post here and there on The Frisky about wanting to lose weight. Most recently, I wrote about how I have a big butt, and while I may not have found a solution to bring about world peace, I did find skinny jeans that fit. The only reason that I was able to get my lower lady lump into those jeans at all is because I lost about 10 pounds over the last, oh, two months, I’d say. So, how did I do it? Well, I’m not entirely sure. Keep reading »

Girl Talk: Why I Became Obsessed With Break Dancing

Growing up in Brooklyn, I was a tomboy without any contact with actual boys. I was the youngest of two girls raised by a single mother. My sister and I both went to an all-girls, ultra-Orthodox Jewish day school and neither of us had any male friends. During summer breaks, I went to an all-girls camp in the Catskills where we played volleyball and basketball in long skirts, though dribbling a basketball ball between your legs with a swath of denim in the way was no easy task. My extracurricular activity of choice was gymnastics, a sport that doesn’t exactly runneth over with boys. Keep reading »
