Lately it seems like the politicians and pundits with the strongest opinions about women’s reproductive health all have one thing in common: a penis. This video, starring Nick Offerman, Tim Meadows, and Judd Nelson, paints a hilarious — and terrifyingly accurate — picture of the current discourse surrounding women’s access to birth control and abortion. Here’s a quote from Nick Offerman’s character that sums it up perfectly: “What qualifies me to be an expert on women’s reproductive health? I’m a 59-year-old man. And late middle-aged men know the most about everything.” [Funny Or Die]

 

Today’s Lady News: More Birth Control Pills Recalled

  • Birth control pills made by Glenmark Generics are being recalled because some of the active/non-active pills have been placed in the wrong order. Check at the link to see if one of your packets of pills has been recalled and use another form of birth control in the meantime! [MSNBC]
  • An Alabama lawmaker is backing off his support for an anti-abortion “transvaginal ultrasound” bill, which is similar to the one which caused an uproar recently in Virginia. [Talking Points Memo]
  • Virginia’s state Senate has advanced a bill mandating women receive an ultrasound before an abortion. (Previously the language of this bill would have required women to have an invasive “transvaginal ultrasound,” but that has since been dropped.) A Democratic state senator proposed an amendment that would require the state to pay for the exam if she cannot afford it, that insurance be required to cover it, and that a woman not be required to have an ultrasound if her doctor tells her the fetus has severe abnormalities. The Republican majority rejected all those suggestions, but did add an exception for rape and incest claims that have been reported to police. [MSNBC] Keep reading »

Did y’all catch last night’s Republican debate? If not, allow me to present my favorite moment, and by favorite, I mean most facepalm-inducing. The moderator read aloud a viewer’s question asking the candidates if they “believe” in birth control and why or why not. First of all, it is absolutely stunning to me that we are even talking about believing in birth control in this day and age. But then the crowd boos!? Do their boos mean that they don’t “believe” in birth control? Who are these people? Are they virgins? The entire Duggar family? I may be very liberal myself, but I know conservatives, have friends who have voted Republican, and I cannot think of a single one, young or old, who does not believe in birth control. It’s not Santa Claus! What decade are we living in?

I’m not going to be able to think of anything else when I watch “The Voice” now.  If he really doesn’t want to screw things up with an accidental pregnancy (she is a Victoria’s Secret model, after all), they may want to consider using a more reliable form of birth control, like, you know, condoms or the Pill or the IUD? Last night on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart was freaking hilarious in his coverage of last week’s anti-birth control sausagefest in Congress, in which a panel of all dudes tried to argue against President Obama’s health care reform compromise. Did you know these men mentioned “spiritual rape,” whatever that is, and Josef Stalin? When you have to invoke Stalin (or Hitler, or Mussolini, although let’s be honest, no one invokes Mussolini) into an argument to get people on board, you know you’re reaching. [The Daily Show]

  • Oklahoma’s state Senate advanced a “fetal personhood” bill on Wednesday that criminalizes all abortion by defining a “person” as the fertilized egg. A bill like this would also criminalize in vitro fertilization, stem cell research, and some birth control. This is the bill that had a proposed amendment by State Sen. Which Moronic Comment About Birth Control Was NOT Made Today?

It has been a long and aggravating day of the government trying to restrict our access to birth control.  A panel of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee ensured the worst PR ever when it convened a bunch of men — men with penises! I repeat, no one with an actual uterus — to discuss the birth control mandate in Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Their party line is that they were just discussing “religious freedom,” meaning, I guess, the freedom for a small minority of religious employers to impose their beliefs on everyone else in the country? I don’t know, I’m still not clear on their point other than “Wah, wah.”

Not surprisingly, silliness is in the water and it has proven a bang-up day for dumb comments about birth control all around. Of the following three comments about birth control, two are actual real things that people said, and one was made up by me. See if you can the difference. Birth control …  

A) … causes prostrate cancer! 

B) … isn’t necessary because women should put aspirin between our knees (or, debatably, inside our vaginas) instead!

C) … increases greenhouse gases!

Here’s a picture of the witness table at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is discussing access to contraception and comprehensive healthcare. Let’s play a quick game of “Count the uteruses,” shall we? Oh, right, there are none. At least there’s a second panel coming up, which will include … wait for it … four more men. Said Rep. Carolyn Maloney before walking out of the hearing in protest: “I look at this panel, and I don’t see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventative health care services, including family planning. Where are the women?”

Sean Hannity from Fox News had a whole bunch of dudes — white dudes, black dudes, all dudes — stop by for a big ol’ sausage-fest discussion of the birth control debate. Comparisons between health care reform to getting taken over by the Nazis? Oh, yeah, somebody went there.

Every woman will have access to birth control under the Obama administration’s latest decision regarding health care reform, which was meant to appease Catholic bishops who balked at a previous iteration of the rule. White House officials stated on Friday that insurers must create a policy that doesn’t offer coverage of contraceptives that can be used by religiously-affiliated employers that object. But insurers also have to offer a plan that covers contraceptives without co-pays or deductibles and they are required to reach out and offer it to women. Explicitly religious employers, such as houses of worship, are still exempt from covering contraception in their prescription plans. Keep reading »
