The Best Things In Life To Fake

I am not a huge fan of “keeping it real.” Real often sucks. Where does real usually leave me? For starters: pale, too broke to afford jewelry I really want, mousy mop-topped and sleep deprived. I am not suggesting we all become cookie-cutter Barbies and I am all for embracing what nature gave us, yet there are just a few guilty pleasures in life where the fake version is indeed better than the real deal. Is Jessica Simpson The Best Person To Lead A Conversation About Unrealistic Beauty Standards?

When I heard a few months ago that pop star Jessica Simpson was considering a reality TV show about “real beauty,” I was thrilled. Finally! A celeb who sought to use the negative press attention towards her and spin it a positive way! In the wake of the offensive tabloid lynch mob over Simpson’s “mom jeans” weight gain, taking the high road seemed like a classy thing to do.

The details of said show are finally out: in a docu-series called “The Price of Beauty” for VH1, Simpson will travel around the world speaking to women about the lengths they go to to achieve physical perfection, including their diets, clothes and beauty regimens.

It does sounds like a cool premise for a TV program. But when I read Jessica’s statement regarding her show, I came to my senses about just who the feel-good, body-positive “messenger” is. Keep reading »

Optimize Your Daily Dose Of Snail Secretion

Snail secretion…ew. If we at The Frisky did not feel a great responsibility to report every beauty secret we discover/investigate/stumble across, we would have left the snail dribble alone and kept down our lunches. Yet, sadly for my stomach, we take our beauty products seriously. I was prepared to laugh off snail secretion face creams as the cream of the bizarre beauty crop, but those pesky peeps at The International Society of Skin Pharmacology Journal wouldn’t let me. Oh yes, those evil scientists cackled evilly as they discovered the regenerative qualities of the snail slime and its beneficial facial effects. The gist of our slimy friend’s beauty success lies in the secretions ability to block out harmful environmental pollution. We might have speed, but we do not have slime that protects us from UV radiation. Luckily for humans (and not so luckily for snails), snail secretion not only protects human skin but has rejuvenating properties as well! To be honest, the article lost me when it started getting into snail immunology, but until my own mental powers failed me, the science sounded plausible enough. No one is claiming snail secretion will permanently solve all your epidermis worries, but if a snail secretion based cream is used daily, you should see improvements faster than at a snails pace. None of the products are drastically different, but because we are The Frisky, we found you the best of every category. Keep reading »

Green Nails Might Catch On With The Help Of Chanel

I love nail polish that’s a little different from the usual pinks and reds, and last fall, I tried to make green nail polish happen. I painted my nails a lovely toad color and hoped others would follow suit — or at least appreciate the color. Our Emily was the only person who was fond enough of the color to paint her own nails with it. And most of my friends said it looked like I had some sort of fungus.

Well, it seems I was a little ahead of the nail polish curve (but slightly off on the exact shade), because Chanel has a jade green polish coming in October. The brand always sets color trends, so I have little doubt we’ll all be sporting minty nails very soon. And I couldn’t be happier.

Want pale green nails right this instant? A few delightful shades, after the jump… Keep reading »

Magnetic Attraction Makes For Good Dating … And Skin Care?

When it comes to facials, our interests have run the gamut from bird poop to beer. Yet, most of these treatments seem more salable on their weirdness factor than their efficacy. The latest to cross our paths is the “Iron Mask” facial offered by Ildi Pekar Skin Care in New York City, that incorporates magnets to suck dirt out of your pores. The intriguing process might be the best facial we’ve ever had.

The treatment gets complicated with about a dozen products applied to your face in a one-hour period (including a variety of essential oils, lotions, and tonics), but the crux of the experience is the maschera al ferro, a pure iron mask that’s massaged into your skin. It feels surprisingly rich and smooth. The facialist then takes a magnet to the material, which removes the iron particles because of the opposite charge, extracting dirt and dead skin with it. You can actually look at the magnet afterward to see the waste, which you may find gross, but we found astounding. The best part is that there’s very little extraction, which in normal facials, can leave you red for days. Meaning you can go out the same night, and have luck with attraction of your own. Blue Nails: Love It Or Loathe It?

A few years ago, we all fell hard for Chanel’s black nail polish. Celebs started sporting this goth color and soon it spread faster than the H1N1 virus. But can they cause another nail craze again? Come summer, most of us turn to bright pinks, corals and reds when we head into the nail salon (if we head in at all); however, this summer may be different…Read More Keep reading »

Beauty Tips For Stealing The Bride’s Show

You can’t wear a white dress to a wedding. It’s just not a subtle enough method for stealing the show. Turn up at the ceremony wearing a floor-length cream silk number, and suddenly everyone’s muttering insults about how you’re the “Inappropriate One.” Instead, walk in looking a level of gorgeous that diverts attention without being completely trashy. Kate Bosworth’s Met Ball hair and makeup (and dress) absolutely slaughtered the competition, and we show you how to steal her look after the jump. Keep reading »
