“When people say, ‘Doesn’t Gloria [Vanderbilt] look great? She’s 85.’ I say, ‘Yes, she was a raving beauty when she was 20,’ that’s the key. Very helpful.”
—Fran Lebowitz on why her friend Gloria Vanderbilt looks so awesome for her age. So put the Botox away. Either ya got it or ya don’t. [WWD]

The hot summer weather might be making us glistening with sweat, but the of-the-moment trend for nails is the opposite of shiny. A tar-like matte black nail polish popped up courtesy of KO Knock Out Cosmetics a couple months ago, and now other colors are available from that company and others are available. And, if you have a favorite shade that doesn’t come in flat finish, a matte top coat will take away any polish’s sheen. Now if only we had a product that could keep us from sweating on a 90-degree day. Keep reading »
There’s a 2-minute documentary worth checking out on the Sundance Channel’s website called “Not Pretty, Really.” The short film is part of a series called “The Art of Seduction” and explores some of the trials and tribulations of beautiful people. That’s right, you guys — it’s super hard being good looking!! Sure, there are the occasional perks the participants in the documentary acknowledge, like free pitas from Pita Pit, rides in private jets, and being paid to sit in windows of fancy restaurants to attract other diners, but the beautiful people want others to know it isn’t always easy being so hot. For example, it gets “frustrating” when people come up to you ALL day to tell you how beautiful you are! And you can never be the “funny girl,” or the “smart girl,” or the “interesting girl” when all anyone sees you as is the “pretty girl.” And sometimes people stare at you like you’re an object! Oh, and other times people just ASSUME things about you like you’re conceited or not smart. One pretty girl even suffered the trauma of people gasping when she won an English award in school! And still, other women have had to be friends with only gay men because they’re the only ones who don’t constantly objectify them. Gosh, I never realized just how hard some people had it… Keep reading »
Ugh, I always manage to be “that girl” at the party, whether I’m drinking or someone else is drinking somehow wine spills onto my clothes. Thanks to my mom though I know that if I grab some salt from the kitchen I can scrub it out before the stain sets. After talking to a few of my other mom’s friends and neighbors I’ve rounded up some homemade beauty secrets that have been passed down from moms to daughter over the years.

I am not a huge fan of “keeping it real.” Real often sucks. Where does real usually leave me? For starters: pale, too broke to afford jewelry I really want, mousy mop-topped and sleep deprived. I am not suggesting we all become cookie-cutter Barbies and I am all for embracing what nature gave us, yet there are just a few guilty pleasures in life where the fake version is indeed better than the real deal. When I heard a few months ago that pop star Jessica Simpson was considering a reality TV show about “real beauty,” I was thrilled. Finally! A celeb who sought to use the negative press attention towards her and spin it a positive way! In the wake of the offensive tabloid lynch mob over Simpson’s “mom jeans” weight gain, taking the high road seemed like a classy thing to do.
The details of said show are finally out: in a docu-series called “The Price of Beauty” for VH1, Simpson will travel around the world speaking to women about the lengths they go to to achieve physical perfection, including their diets, clothes and beauty regimens.
It does sounds like a cool premise for a TV program. But when I read Jessica’s statement regarding her show, I came to my senses about just who the feel-good, body-positive “messenger” is. Keep reading »
