I had a hard time comprehending matte nails when the trend took off last year. I mean, isn’t the point of a manicure to make your nails shine? Then add the confusion over top coat to the mix — do you forgo a top coat completely or do you search for a matte one too? And choosing to go matte is more difficult than picking a nail color. All that being said, I’m considering taking the matte plunge with a polish from Orly’s Plastix Collection. These polishes mimic the texture of plastic, vinyl, and pleather in a matte finish with fun bright colors so you needn’t fear any references to domination fetishes. The collection launches later this month on OrlyBeauty.com, where polishes normally retail for about $7.50. [Nylon] Keep reading »
A day in the sun is always fun until you’re suffering from a bad sunburn or dehydration. It is times like these that you probably wish you had someone to remind you to reapply your sun block or tell you it’s time to get out of the sun. Now, thanks to UVSunSense Wristbands, you can have that reminder.
UVSunSense Wristbands aren’t Silly Bandz; they’re actually smart bands. The band is simply worn on your wrist while you’re in the sun. Strap on the band, apply sunscreen to your body and over the wristband, and then enjoy your time in the sun. The wristbands are formulated to work with SPF 15 or higher and will change color when it is time for the wearer to reapply sunscreen or get out of the sun. UVSunSense wristbands can be used in fresh water, salt water, and even chlorinated water, so whether you’re in a lake, ocean, or pool you’ll still get the same protection. They’ll even work in the shower to give an accurate reading after outdoor activities in the sun. [$6.98 for a pack of seven, Amazon.com] Keep reading »
Dang, when people complain, MAC really does listen. Last week, Jessica told you about the makeup brand’s collaboration with designers Rodarte, which was inspired by the culture and colors of Mexico. Two nail polish shades were named “Juarez” and “Factory,” which we deemed insensitive and offensive, because the town is notorious for the number of women who have been raped and murdered with little or no response from police. MAC first responded by saying that they planned to donate a portion of the proceeds to benefit the city’s crime victims, but even bigger steps are being taken today. According to The Cut, MAC sent an email around to editors saying that they are now planning on changing the names of the products in the collection. No word yet on what those changes will entail, but thumb’s up to MAC for taking the complaints seriously. Let’s hope they’re still planning on those donations though. [NYMag.com] Keep reading »
Eat this all you young, hot 20-somethings. According to a new survey, women are at the peak of their appeal at age 31. Why? Well, because aside from still having their good looks, they possess the X-factor that only comes with age: confidence. The thought is that by the age of 31, a woman has let go of insecurities and feels comfortable in her own skin. This includes having a more authentic sense of style and radiating a feeling of beauty. I don’t wanna brag, but if this survey is correct, this should be a very, very good year for me. [And me! -- Editor] And my apologies to the gorgeous 20-somethings I may have insulted. You’re hot and you know it. [Daily Mail] Keep reading »
We’ve done a post about maintaining pretty feet. This is not that post. This, rather, is a guide to going apes**t on your feet once you’ve let them get to what seems like a point of no return. Having recently pumiced my own mangled extremities half to death and come out alive, I’m not unlike a war hero in the battle for more lovely toes. Click through if you know what I’m talking about when I mention blisters, band-aid buildup, and the sort of dry, dirty skin not even a mother could love. Keep reading »
OK, I admit, I’m a virgin.
Or rather, I have virgin brows. That’s right, somehow, in all of my twenty-something years, my arches have avoided being plucked, waxed, sugared or zapped. Read more … Keep reading »
