We just got an email from J.Crew alerting us to the fact that “New Fall Arrivals Are In” and immediately stopped working to drool over the retailer’s genius ribbon-front top, wool schoolboy blazer, and …nail polish? Yes, J.Crew appears to be selling nail polish from our favorite maker, Essie! (We always knew the people at J.Crew were totally on the same page as us.) The two special colors are called One of A Kind, a bright orangey red (which just happens to be this writer’s favorite shade for her short nails), and Eternal Optimist, a subdued baby pink.
Trying a new polish color can be a gamble, because what it looks like in the bottle isn’t necessary how it appears on your hands. But since we adore just about everything J.Crew produces, we’re guessing these shades, with their J.Crew stamp of approval, are pretty fab. [J.Crew] Keep reading »
Gym addicts may not be the shallow narcissists we think they are. Most people — more than 54 percent of 2,882 polled by EveryDay Health and the American Council on Fitness — said their health was the reason they exercised, not a quest for the perfect beach bod, and they’re doing it for their loved ones. More than 90 percent of the participants were women with an average age of 44. Seventy-nine percent of the total respondents said they would still work out even if there were a magic pill to maintain a trim and fit physique. Only 15 percent said they’d become inactive couch potatoes. One researcher said she felt reassured that health was more important to exercise fanatics than appearance and weight control. She also suggested that people might be unwilling to give up exercising because it’s a great stress reliever. [Reuters] Keep reading »
Simcha rocks a very distinct look on a daily basis — eyeshadow and cat eyeliner, ruby red lips, plenty of bling and a pompadour. And she looks rad. But when she told us that the only people who’ve seen her sans the war paint are her bedfellows, we decided it was time for a make-under, just so she’d have a look to bust out on days when she wants to sleep in and stuff. The dramatic “after,” an oh-so-informative video and the products we used, after the jump! Keep reading »

“When people say, ‘Doesn’t Gloria [Vanderbilt] look great? She’s 85.’ I say, ‘Yes, she was a raving beauty when she was 20,’ that’s the key. Very helpful.”
—Fran Lebowitz on why her friend Gloria Vanderbilt looks so awesome for her age. So put the Botox away. Either ya got it or ya don’t. [WWD]

The hot summer weather might be making us glistening with sweat, but the of-the-moment trend for nails is the opposite of shiny. A tar-like matte black nail polish popped up courtesy of KO Knock Out Cosmetics a couple months ago, and now other colors are available from that company and others are available. And, if you have a favorite shade that doesn’t come in flat finish, a matte top coat will take away any polish’s sheen. Now if only we had a product that could keep us from sweating on a 90-degree day. Keep reading »
There’s a 2-minute documentary worth checking out on the Sundance Channel’s website called “Not Pretty, Really.” The short film is part of a series called “The Art of Seduction” and explores some of the trials and tribulations of beautiful people. That’s right, you guys — it’s super hard being good looking!! Sure, there are the occasional perks the participants in the documentary acknowledge, like free pitas from Pita Pit, rides in private jets, and being paid to sit in windows of fancy restaurants to attract other diners, but the beautiful people want others to know it isn’t always easy being so hot. For example, it gets “frustrating” when people come up to you ALL day to tell you how beautiful you are! And you can never be the “funny girl,” or the “smart girl,” or the “interesting girl” when all anyone sees you as is the “pretty girl.” And sometimes people stare at you like you’re an object! Oh, and other times people just ASSUME things about you like you’re conceited or not smart. One pretty girl even suffered the trauma of people gasping when she won an English award in school! And still, other women have had to be friends with only gay men because they’re the only ones who don’t constantly objectify them. Gosh, I never realized just how hard some people had it… Keep reading »
Ugh, I always manage to be “that girl” at the party, whether I’m drinking or someone else is drinking somehow wine spills onto my clothes. Thanks to my mom though I know that if I grab some salt from the kitchen I can scrub it out before the stain sets. After talking to a few of my other mom’s friends and neighbors I’ve rounded up some homemade beauty secrets that have been passed down from moms to daughter over the years.
