I’m Convinced That Glittery Makeup Can Work In Real Life

We’ve talked about crazy makeup trends before—and even went to the source of this current glittery eyeshadow trend—but up until now, I was totally anti. Sparkle-related makeup was always one of those things that looked great on celebs or in photo shoots, but, for me personally, I couldn’t be convinced of how to pull it off in real life without looking like a disco ball—until now. Witness model Natalia Vodianova’s spread in the new December issue of V (one of the photos is above!). For the first time, it’s do-able glitter—and I think I’m intrigued because here is how it works … Keep reading »

What To Do When A Favorite Beauty Product Gets Discontinued

The other day I was at Target picking up a few things when I noticed the packaging on my Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion for Sensitive Skin with SPF 15 had changed. Then, I saw the active ingredients were highlighted in yellow, which alerted me to the fact that they weren’t the usual 6 percent octinoxate and 3 percent zinc oxide. Olay changed my favorite moisturizer on me!

I know this company didn’t mean to cause me any harm. They were, I’m sure, simply updating the product to make it even better. But since my skin is so very sensitive, the new, slightly different formula doesn’t work as well for me, and I’ve heard others reporting greasy-looking skin and breakouts due to the switch. What’s a girl to do when a staple in her beauty regimen gets changed or discontinued? Keep reading for six tips on how to deal with the loss of a favorite beauty product. Keep reading »

Moisturize For A Good Cause

When you do something good, you shouldn’t expect to get anything in return. But, you have to admit, it’s not so bad when you do. During the holiday season, Kiehl’s is selling a special edition version of their beloved by the masses Creme de Corps body moisturizer, with 100 percent of the net profits supporting RxArt, an organization that brings art to pediatric hospital patients. The lotion, with a bright label designed by graffiti artist KAWS, guarantees to keep your skin (or a loved one’s) nice and soft all winter. And every time you put some on, you’ll be enriching young patients’ lives with art. [$26.50, Kiehl's] Keep reading »

How To Get Agyness’ Batcrackers Crazy Lash Look

My my, the fashion stars certainly decided to shine bright at the recent ACE Awards. No one could really compete with Lady Gaga’s interesting ensemble, but supermodel-of-the-moment Agyness Deyn came close with her edgy beauty look. Not only did she rock the bowl cut that’s so chic right now, we also got the scoop from the lady behind her accompanying fine feathered friends. Makeup artist Frances Hathaway applied Shu Uemura’s Black Velvet Feather False Eyelashes to her lower lids. “Agyness is a cutting edge girl,” said Hathaway. “I needed a fashion-forward lash with an architectural influence.” Did she ever! However, she cautions that one must exercise restraint in such situations: “When making such a big statement, keep it simple; just make one lash.” After all, you wouldn’t want to go overboard. How Long Until You Let A New Guy See You Without Makeup?

Unless you’re a Neutrogena spokesmodel with flawless skin, you know there’s a huge difference between you with makeup and the bare-faced you. At least, I know this in my case. It’s not that my skin tone is that uneven or that I have so much acne, but I look like a completely different (and prettier) person with a swipe of foundation and a dab of concealer in the problem areas. Dracula Therapy Is The Scariest Anti-Aging Treatment We’ve Ever Heard Of

Warning: for those who are squeamish about needles, blood, or both, this beauty treatment is definitely not for you. So please, carry on, and we’ll catch you later. For the “True Blood” lovers or facial-happy folks, prepared to be intrigued. The latest in anti-aging treatments, according to the Daily Mail, is what’s referred to as “Dracula Therapy,” where a doctor draws your blood, extracts minerals from it, and injects it back into the skin on your face with dozens of pricks. The supposed result? Disappearance of fine lines, improvement of skin tone, and rejuvenated skin. Sounds like something straight out of a horror movie, right? Keep reading »

Scientists’ Study Of Twins Confirms What We Already Knew About Looking Younger Longer

Science reveals common sense to be fact! A study conducted by Dr. Bahman Guyuron and published in The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal researched the appearance of aging twins to determine why one half of the pair would be protected by time while the other would become wrinkled. While the side-by-side slide shows can be shocking, the reasons behind the wrinkles are exactly what your mama warned you about. Keep reading to find out how some of the twins stayed young-looking: Keep reading »

Gadzooks, We’re Putting Our Makeup On Backwards!

So, picture it, I’m putting on my makeup last night (fascinating right?)—mostly doing the same, exact thing I do every freaking time. Clearly, I need to change up my “look”—but that’s a whole different post. Anyway, the application order goes something like this: Clarins Flash Beauty Balm, concealer, bronzer/powder, eyeliner (I’m way into navy liner these days), mascara, blush and lipgloss. No deviation whatsoever. Apparently, I’m a bit in the wrong—you are supposed to do your eyes before everything else, even your foundation/concealer, or so says makeup artist Kate Lee (she’s glammed up every Hollywood starlet from Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley to Diane Kruger and Sienna Miller): “I like to do the smoky eye before starting any other makeup. That way, if you accidentally get a little bit of eyeshadow on your face, you don’t end up ruining your foundation or powder.” Interesting. What about you gals, do you have a make-up application formula? It looks like mine is sort of all wrong. [Teen Vogue] Keep reading »

Taking Halloween As Seriously As A Wedding

I love Halloween. I want to believe that everyone loves Halloween — like it’s a universal Tim Burton-style Christmas — and that we all come together, unified, for the sake of weirdness and costumes, zombies, vampires, princesses, and gore. I’m torn, though, on whether I love it enough to take Vogue‘s costume suggestions. For the haute couture undead look that’s all the rage, they suggest booking a professional stylist. The people of MAC, Sephora, Nars, or Henri Bendel will make you fabulous for a price. Some of these ghastly makeovers run over $200. I didn’t even spend that much for my wedding up-do! Silly and frivolous or the expensive style solution for the biggest dress-up day of the year? What’s a ghoul to do? Keep reading »
