Until recently, I had owned exactly two hair dryers in my life. The first was a travel-sized generic brand model my grandma gave to me that I used until a malfunction turned it into a miniature flame thrower (that was an exciting morning!). The second was a basic Conair dryer that I got to replace the flame thrower, and it gave me a solid seven years of nearly daily use until it finally crapped out last month.
When it came time to replace it, I considered buying one of those super expensive hair dryers that claim to leave your locks perfectly dry and super shiny in 3 minutes flat. I looked into a number of different models that ranged in price from $100 to $300. I was willing to pay top dollar for a high quality product, but in the back of my mind I felt a nagging loyalty to Conair (the hair products brand, not the movie, although I feel a strong emotional allegiance to both). Since my previous hair dryer had lasted SO LONG and not given me any problems, I felt I owed it to Conair to at least read up on their current offerings. I found some good reviews of the Conair Infiniti Pro, and for less than $40, the price couldn’t be beat. I decided to scrap the idea of a spendy hair dryer and went to Walgreens and got an Infiniti Pro instead. Did I make the right call? Read on to find out! Keep reading »
It. Is. Finally. Happening. Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne — the couple known affectionately as Chavril — are getting married in the south of France today. Over the weekend, some Chavril friends tweeted about wedding festivities, which set off a rumor that the wedding happened on Saturday, which set off a frantic stream of “I NEED PICS WHERE ARE THE PICS” messages between Amelia and me, but alas, the event was actually a pre-wedding party. Today is the actual wedding day, and the best part? Today is also Canada Day. Seriously.
Wondering how to properly celebrate the Canadian Royal Wedding? Here are five ideas… Keep reading »
Reese Witherspoon has always been a fashion-conscious lady, but ever since her drunken arrest video was released, she’s been even more on top of her style game. Her preppy, polished outfits convey a message that I’m sure is very purposeful — “Hey, look how put together and professional and clearly not drunk I am!” — but hey, whatever the motivation, she looks fabulous. Click through to check out seven of her best recent outfits!
I have mixed feelings about alpacas because when I was growing up I lived next door to an alpaca farm, and let me tell you: those creatures are moodier than the vampires from Twilight. However, this photo, taken on shearing day at a German alpaca farm, is placing me firmly on team pro-alpaca. I mean, look at those smooth bellies and fuzzy little heads! After the jump, check out some mugshot-style closeups of the freshly shaven herd that literally made me say, “Squeeeeee!” out loud. Keep reading »
You know how whenever you decide to hide something in a really clever hiding spot, you end up outsmarting yourself and can’t find it the next day? It usually means you discover a $50 bill and your grandma’s secret peanut butter cookie recipe crammed under your box spring when you move, but for a Huntington Beach woman named Dori Rhoades, the failure of her clever hiding spot was a much more expensive proposition. In an apparent attempt to thwart prospective robbers, Rhoades placed $1500 cash, a ring her husband gave her, and a pair of $18,000 diamond earrings in the pockets of a jean jacket she kept in her closet. And then she forgot they were in there, at least until she had a garage sale…. Keep reading »
I usually have to use non-plus-size actresses as inspiration for Style Stealer (Plus!) posts because there are so few plus-size celebrity women, and even fewer ever pop up in our photo feeds. Melissa McCarthy always looks gorgeous all dolled up at red carpet events, but I was extra excited to see her dressed down a bit in this badass outfit for a recent appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman.” I have a feeling this look — retro band t-shirt, blazer, printed leggings, statement necklace — is the “real” Melissa, because she’s totally glowing in that “I freakin’ love my outfit today” way. I’m well acquainted with designer Nanette Lepore because I’ve lusted after many of her gorgeous dresses while browsing the racks at my favorite department stores. But before I read the amazing book Overdressed, I didn’t know that Lepore was one of the few designers who still produces the majority of her clothing in the USA — to be exact, 80% of her line is made in New York City. This manufacturing decision comes at a price: most of her pieces retail for between $250 and $400, but you’re paying for good craftsmanship, better fabric quality, and the assurance that the people who make your clothes are being compensated fairly. If you’ve been saving up for a really special dress, I would suggest taking a gander at Nanette Lepore’s offerings. Click through to check out some of my favorites!

Judging by her sweet face, polka dot dress, and pink tights, most people expected six-year-old “America’s Got Talent” contestant Aaralyn to sing a cute version of “Animal Crackers In My Soup,” but that’s not Aaralyn’s music style of choice. When she took the stage, backed by her nine-year-old brother Izzy on the drums, something totally unexpected — and totally awesome — came out of her mouth: an original screamo song called “Zombie Skin.” Just push play, OK? You won’t regret it. [YouTube]
