New Life Goal: Cuddle A Baby Walrus

This little guy is a 4-6-week-old walrus calf who was separated from his family and rescued by fishermen from an Alaskan lagoon. He’s currently being cared for at a marine rehabilitation center, where he’s giving (and getting) plenty of snuggles from the staff. Suddenly I am very aware of the lack of baby walrus in my life. Also, can I make a confession? This is my first time using the word “Squee” (I’m more of a “Beeeep!” girl myself), so I had to ask Jessica how many e’s are in a typical “Squee.” “As many as it needs,” she said, and after assessing this photo, declared, “Yup, that’s gonna be a four-e ‘squee.’” So wise, that one. Weekend Project: Make Your Own Himmeli Mobile!

DIY: Framed Vases
A cute and clever way to show off spring stems. Read More »

I love adding 3D design elements to a room but I hate adding clutter to surfaces, so I’m totally on board with any cool thing that hangs from the ceiling. Pretty sure this himmeli mobile is the definition of “cool thing that hangs from the ceiling.” Commonly used as Christmas decorations in Finland, these unique geometric designs would look great in an office or living room, and all you need to make your own is colorful coffee straws, string, scissors (or “siccors,” in Lochte speak), and a needle. Now go on and make your high school math teacher proud! [The Red Jet]

When I visited The Frisky offices in New York earlier this year, I stayed in a cute little hotel near Central Park. One morning I got up to take a shower, and as I turned on the water I noticed an apple seed-shaped speck on the bathmat. I reacted like most people would: backing out of the room slowly, sprinting for the phone and whispering, “I … found … a … bed … bug” as if the tiny parasite were an unstable man with a gun. Within moments, the entire housekeeping staff rushed through the door and hustled me into a different room. Luckily my little visitor turned out to be the only antisocial bed bug in history, so my stuff wasn’t infested and I avoided any bites, but the whole experience really freaked me out (so much so that I quarantined my suitcase in my garage for weeks after returning home). Next time I stay in a hotel I’ll definitely do a search on Bed Bug Registry first — this website compiles reports of bedbugs to help travelers and renters make informed choices about where they stay. The bad news? All of those little red dots are bed bug infestations. If you need me I’ll be in my bunker. [Lifehacker]

This Bottle Of Nail Polish Costs $250,000 And I Don’t Want To Live On This Planet Anymore

Caviar Nails
This indulgent nail art is fit for a queen. Read More »

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the most expensive nail polish in the world: Azature’s Black Diamond. The shimmery black formula contains 267 carats of crushed diamonds, and–yep, you read the headline correctly–one bottle will cost you $250,000. The other day I spent $12 on a bottle of nail polish and felt a little guilty and self-indulgent, so I don’t even know how to fully comprehend the fact that this exists, and that (presumably) someone is going to buy it. I mean, can you imagine? Every time you chipped your manicure on your keyboard, you’d be losing, like, a thousand dollars. Stressful. Apparently Azature is deigning to sell a department store version for $25, but I think I’ll just DIY my own by shredding up some dollar bills, mixing them into a bottle of Wet N’ Wild, and then crying myself to sleep. Every phone I’ve ever owned has met a tragic and untimely death. Whether it’s the toilet, the concrete, the washing machine, a sandy beach, or a spilled glass of juice, I am an expert at breaking cell phones, so when I splurged on a fancy new Android a few weeks ago, I vowed things would be different. And for awhile, they were: I cradled it gently against my ear; I never touched the screen when my hands were messy; I tucked it carefully into its very own pocket in my purse. And then, a few days ago, I dropped it on the concrete while taking a nice, slow-paced stroll through the park. Looking down at that cracked screen, at all my hard work gone to waste, I had an epiphany: there must be 50 ways to break your cell phone. With apologies to Paul Simon, here they are… Keep reading »

As you may have heard, eight Olympic badminton players were recently disqualified from the women’s doubles competition for “not using one’s best efforts to win.” Apparently the real issue is that they were throwing matches to manipulate the tournament match-ups, but when I first read the headlines, I have to admit I was totally taken with the idea of being able to charge someone with the formal offense of “not trying.” I asked the rest of The Frisky staff who else we’d like to put on blast for “not using their best efforts.” Check out our list of underachievers after the jump, and feel free to add your own in the comments!
