When it comes to doing hair, I am spectacularly incompetent. In fact, during the makeover portion of middle school slumber parties my friends would make me sit alone in a separate room so I couldn’t “mess anything up.” (It sounds cruel but it was actually a wise decision.) As a result I’ve spent much of my adult life alternating between two signature styles: the “sleep on it and hope it looks good in the morning” and the “rushed ponytail.” Lately I’ve been wanting to switch things up, so I scoured the internet for some cute, easy hairstyles (requirements: 10 minutes or less, slightly messy, no french braids). Here are 8 of them, and please feel free to share your own ideas/tips/links in the comments!
It’s been 14 years since “Titanic” came out, and I’m not sure about you, but I’ve spent most of that time quietly sobbing, practicing the chorus of “My Heart Will Go On,” and asking anyone with a pencil to draw me like one of their French girls. Looks like our hearts will go on: Paramount just released the official poster for “Titanic: 3D,” which will hit theaters April 6th, 2012 (the 100-year anniversary of the actual Titanic’s voyage). This gives us five months to emotionally prepare — better start now! [via The Hitlist]
How awesome is this Lord of the Rings cardigan? Unfortunately it’s not actually for sale, just a “pseudo design” from the sweater fanatics over at We Have Cardigans, but I’m planning to gather up some nerdy friends and fabric markers to bring this baby to life. Make no mistake: the battle for a DIY Middle Earth cardigan is about to begin…. [Via We Have Cardigans]
Lockets are such a mysterious and whimsical accessory. Just think of all the things you can hide in that little vault around your neck: locks of hair from your lover, a tiny note, maybe a snack for later. We’ve rounded up some of the most eye-catching lockets Etsy has to offer, from vintage birds to golden snitches to paper flowers. There’s something for everyone, all for 20 bucks or less…
My boyfriend and I are obsessed with “Downton Abbey.” Like, completely obsessed. We watched all the episodes in the span of a week and are currently rewatching them. We love the drama and the writing and the characters, but truthfully, I would probably still watch it with the sound turned off because the sets and costumes are so breathtakingly beautiful. The series follows an aristocratic family from 1912 to 1919, and my god, the outfits these people wear to dinner! Alas, we can’t all dress like turn-of-the-century British nobility, but we can bring a little vintage extravagance into our wardrobes — especially during holiday party season. You know in movies when a character is so deep in thought they wander around the city completely unaware of their surroundings, stepping in front of buses and scattering flocks of pigeons? That was me yesterday, pondering sequined shorts. As a diehard fan of sequins, I love every sparkly trend, but sequined shorts bring up so many questions. Are they a sassy new option to pair with tights for holiday parties? Is it possible to wear them without looking like an escaped castmember of Chicago? If your thighs rubbed together would it produce a metallic grating sound? I might need to meditate for awhile to find some answers.
So what do you think? Do you own a pair of sequin shorts? Any plans to rock them this winter? [Chelsea & Violet Sequin Shorts, $88, Dillard's]
Colorblocking is a huge trend right now, and for good reason: it’s the perfect antidote to dark winter days. Ready to try it yourself? All you need are two (or more) bright colored solids, worn together for visual impact. Cobalt jeans and a pink sweater, for example. Or a red dress with orange tights. Whether you want to dive into a rainbow outfit or just add some color to your winter wardrobe, we’ve rounded up some bright basics to help you get started. Click through to check ‘em out…

We go back a long way, you and me. We’ve gotten together a few times a week since 8th grade, although according to some of the girls in my class I should have become acquainted with you at least a year earlier. On the whole, our relationship has been delightfully smooth (see what I did there?), but there’s something we need to discuss, something that hasn’t changed in the past 13 years and is making it hard for me to trust you… Keep reading »
