Tonight, the boy band One Direction will take the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards for a much-hyped performance. This fact is making me feel very old, because all the young people on the internet are freaking out about it and I’m like, “Wait, what is a One Direction?” This stands in stark contrast to my lifestyle in the ’90s, when my love for boy bands–namely the Backstreet Boys–was so intense I spent all my time talking about them, listening to them, watching their music videos, going to their concerts, writing them semi-desperate letters, making artful collages of their headshots, buying behind-the-scenes DVDs, and planning my inevitable BSB wedding. Yep, I knew–and still know–pretty much everything there is to know about the Backstreet Boys, but I know pretty much nothing about One Direction. Here are nine specific discrepancies that my 14-year-old self would be ashamed of… Keep reading »

Dear Sergey Pakhomov aka The Pasta Artist,
Six years ago you were working on an ad campaign for a Russian macaroni company and were struck by divine inspiration: what if you built models of various objects using macaroni? So you did, and the ad campaign fizzled, but your life was forever changed. Now you build all kinds of things using all different kinds of pasta: spaghetti motorcycles with rotelle wheels, bi-planes with lasagna wings, and a whole pasta town complete with a linguini windmill and penne playground.
So why am I contacting you today? Well, I’m something of an amateur pasta artist myself. A beautiful pan of cheesy rigatoni speaks to my heart and soul in a much more profound way than the Sistine Chapel ever could. I don’t care for oil paintings unless the oil is olive and the canvas is cannelloni. Your work truly moves me. What do you say we collaborate sometime?
Listen, I don’t want you to take this letter the wrong way, because I appreciate your work, I really do. You valiantly protect my boyfriend’s jaw night after night from the very real dangers of bruxism (aka teeth grinding), and it’s thanks to you that he hasn’t gnashed his teeth down into sad little stumps in his sleep. “Teeth” are like, number three on my Desirable Qualities In A Mate checklist, so in a way, you’ve ensured our relationship can continue to flourish.
It’s just, I guess I didn’t realize what a big role you would play in our relationship… Keep reading »
Country star Kellie Pickler (right) shaved off her signature bright blond hair yesterday to show support for her childhood friend Summer Holt Miller, a 36-year-old mother of two who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and will begin chemotherapy this week. The two women appeared on “Good Morning America” this morning to discuss Pickler’s buzzed locks and raise breast cancer awareness. “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it,” said Miller. What a brave and beautiful display of friendship. [Entertainment Weekly] Keep reading »
“Nobody wants to talk about their weight. For me, I have had to come to a place where I am comfortable with myself. I’m a mom now, and get to be a role model for this beautiful little girl … I feel like everybody can do what I am doing. I’m not a supermodel. My body is not bouncing back like a supermodel. I’m just your everyday woman who is trying to feel good and be healthy for her daughter, her fiancé and herself.”
–Jessica Simpson, pop star, entrepreneur, and new mom to baby Maxwell, responds to USA Today‘s questions about losing her very famous baby weight. Now, don’t get me wrong, the article also contains the usual stats about her Weight Watchers points allotments, and I know she’s being paid ungodly sums of money to lose the weight, but still, I thought this quote was actually really thoughtful and inspiring, even. As someone whose never-had-a-baby body looks a lot like Jessica’s post-baby body, I’ve been very interested to see how the media–and more importantly, Jessica herself–handles her weight loss process. I’d love to hear more about her journey to find a healthy weight under massive pressure, but with her “new body” being unveiled on Katie “Eat A Sandwich” Couric‘s show next week, I’m afraid my hopes aren’t terribly high for a positive and honest conversation about body image and self-esteem. “I will admit that the day a bigger group of the cast did get together really was amazing. We were in an old set and hearing some of those voices together. I think everyone involved was kind of dumbstruck by it. It really wasn’t supposed to happen in a way; shows don’t ‘come back.’ And this was the moment we realized it had.”
–Mitch Hurwitz, mastermind behind the Greatest Show In History, “Arrested Development,” describes the feeling on the set as the cast reunited to film 10 new episodes that will air exclusively on Netflix. While Hurwitz carefully sidesteps any spoilers (“We have this new JarJar Bluth character so there’s no way anyone will be disappointed”), there are a ton of other fascinating gems in his interview with Vulture, including details about Gob’s Segway and the beyond-exciting revelation that the the show might be coming back for more than 10 episodes. Be still, my Bluth-loving heart! [Vulture]
“You never know what your parents are going to say when you tell them you’re getting married — especially when it’s with someone they haven’t met yet! My mom is a huge fan of Avril’s, so putting her on the speaker phone and telling her the news was hilarious and equally embarrassing.”
–Nickelback frontman/Canadian dreamboat Chad Kroeger reveals to Hello! Canada that his parents hadn’t met Avril Lavigne prior to the couple’s surprise engagement. Other revelations from the ChAvril cover story? Apparently Chad has yet to visit Avril’s hometown of Napanee, Ontario, but is excited to make the trip and eat at her favorite pizzeria, while Avril is busy planning the wedding, which will be “a huge celebration.” If that ridiculously large rock on her finger is any indication, this wedding will be visible from space. It’s officially September now, which means it’s time to reflect on how we spent the dog days of summer. Did you have a good summer? Did you make boozy popsicles? Did you smile broadly while wearing a sunhat the size of a Mini Cooper? If so, good work! Want to know what I did this summer? I saw a lot of men wearing tank tops and I had complicated feelings about it.
Seriously though, I think 2012 will go down in history as the Summer Of Men’s Tank Tops (SOMTT for short). I mean, men have always worn tank tops, but this year the trend really caught on, and suddenly sleeveless shirts became a totally legitimate clothing option for regular dudes, not just mega hipsters and Nickelback fans… Keep reading »
