My favorite craft projects involve taking a very ordinary material and transforming it into something totally unexpected. For example, maybe you take 10 washers (you know, those round discs found at hardware stores), paint them with a bright nail polish, and create a very of-the-moment geometric bib necklace that would look right at home in the pages of a high fashion magazine. So cool. Click here to learn how. [By Wilma]
I am not very good at being a hipster. Sure, I own a few pairs of wayfarers and I’ve been known to see movies ironically, but I’ve never thought of myself as “cool” and I really, really hate PBR (am I suffering from Hipster Denial Disorder? Most likely). Even so, when I plopped all my favorite indie/emo/electro-dance songs into one playlist, I fell in love with the results. I’m sure real hipsters will dismiss most or all of these artists as too mainstream, but you’ve gotta admit–it’s a great mix for getting stuff done around the house or, you know, brooding and illustrating your graphic novel. Enjoy, my dears!

This Saturday — tomorrow! — night, the Earth will pass through a cloud of debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet, resulting in a fantastic display of meteors streaking across the sky (or through the atmosphere, if we want to get technical). Known as the Perseid meteor shower, this celestial show is like Christmas for space nerds, and I’ll definitely be heading out to the country to see it. Want to nerd out with me? Here are six tips and tricks for having the best stargazing experience! Keep reading »
You guys, look, it’s actually happening! This right here is photographic proof that the Spice Girls are hard at work rehearsing for their triumphant reunion performance at the Olympics closing ceremonies on Sunday. Titled “A Symphony of British Music,” the show will also include Adele, Muse, and members of The Who, The Kinks, and Pink Floyd. All the other acts are fine and good, but I mean, really, does it get any more British than Posh, Ginger, Scary, Sporty, and Baby rolling into the stadium on bedazzled cabs, flanked by dapper men in suits? Cheers! [Buzzfeed]
For all my issues with “House Hunters International” (namely that most of the people featured on it are entitled assholes), I am still an avid fan of the show and watch it every chance I get. The vast majority of episodes feature rich, white, heterosexual retired couples looking for a luxury condo in a beachfront gated community, but apparently this coming Monday, the House Hunters will have a much more interesting–and tragic–backstory. I love to cook, but most of my friends don’t, and the way they tell it, figuring out meal ideas that don’t involve Chinese takeout containers is a constant struggle. So let’s talk easy recipes, shall we? I rounded up eight recipes that will have you in and out of the kitchen in 30 minutes or less (in some cases closer to 10!), don’t require expensive ingredients or complex techniques, and, most importantly, taste hella good. As much as I love Lady Gaga, I am slightly suspicious that she injected herself with Muppet DNA a few years ago and is slowly morphing into a hybrid species villain that only Spider Man will be able to contain. Photo evidence #673: this fuzzy hot pink getup she wore to try on wedding dresses with her BFF at the Vera Wang store yesterday. That look on the face of the woman on the left pretty much says it all, no? [Photo: Splash News]
Over the weekend, I went to an outdoor wedding, which was totally lovely except for the fact that Saturday happened to be the hottest day Oregon’s had in three years. The temperature allowed the guests to bond very quickly by comparing the size of our back sweat stains, but damn, it was an uncomfortable afternoon. I felt so grateful that I’d picked up a cute, breezy dress the week before (that green floral number on the left, in fact!), so I thought it might be helpful to round up some other dress options to get everyone through the rest of the sweltering summer wedding season in style and (relative) comfort. Time to officially file Monica in the “’90s Teen Idols Who Have Aged Well” category. Doesn’t she look incredible? I love everything about her outfit, from the trendy mint-colored jeans (jeggings, to be exact) to the silk tunic to those funky fabric sandals that look so cool on everyone else but whenever I try them on, make it appear as though I’ve constructed crude footwear out of paper bags. Sigh. What was I talking about again? Oh, right — Monica, keep doing whatever you’re doing, because it’s working. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
“I’ve always been a girl who loves to dress up. I already put my makeup on twice today: I put it on to take my kid to school, and then I went home, washed my face, and put it on again to have lunch with you … I like to make my husband like me more, and he likes it when I’m wearing makeup.”
–Gwen Stefani makes the surprising admission to Harper’s Bazaar that her husband Gavin Rossdale actually prefers it when she wears makeup. Pretty much every guy I’ve ever known has belonged to the “less is more” camp when it comes to makeup, but I’d love to hear from readers on this one: do you wear makeup for the benefit of your significant other? Do they like it when you wear makeup? I definitely like feeling put together for my boyfriend, which, for me, includes a bit of makeup, but I shudder at the idea that some concealer and a swipe of mascara would make my partner “like me more.” [Harper's Bazaar]
