We were so thrilled to hear about the return of Arrested Development (a new season and a movie? Is this real life?) that we decided an AD-themed style inspiration board was in order. Our vote for Most Stylish Bluth would be the ever-ignored teenage movie executive Maeby, who rebels against her fashion plate mother by dressing in layers of clashing prints, stripes, and plaids–and happens to look great doing it. The scene: 3 p.m. on a Thursday, Walgreens (or similar well-stocked pharmacy).

OK, I’m here for one thing and one thing only: anti-frizz serum. This early fall humidity is making me look like Phil Spector at his murder trial and that is not good for my social life. It’s time to take action. It’s time to smooth things out. Ooh, but maybe hairspray would be better? I think my hairstylist said hairspray is better than serum. Or maybe she said mousse is better than styling wax. Actually I think she said she didn’t really “get” the Borat movie. Yeah. That was it.

Love ‘Em Or Leave ‘Em: Boat Shoes?

When I started seeing boat shoes in stores and fashion editorials I thought they were awesome — comfortable, versatile, with a laid back preppy vibe — but I quickly found out that not everyone shared the sentiment. My boyfriend, for example, who, upon seeing a photo, said, “I guess if you really like them, I could learn to like them too.” And my friend Katelyn, who was a bit more direct: when I picked up a pair while we were out shopping she grabbed them out of my hand and said, “Winona, seriously, you cannot buy these shoes.” I asked her why and she replied, “Because they’re ugly.” So, what do you guys think? Are you rocking boat shoes or wishing this trend would hurry up and sink? [Sperry Top-Sider Slip-Ons, $80]

Travel Diary: The Dos & Don’ts Of Visiting Italy

Last week, I told you about my trip to Paris, in all its gorgeous, historic, delicious glory. This week I explored Italy with my mom and my brother Devin. My family is Italian but we’d never been to Italy, and from the people to the scenery to the food, it didn’t disappoint. We went to my friend Milena’s beautiful wedding on Lake Garda and then drove down to Rome, stopping in a couple seaside towns on the way but mostly trying not to die on the highways. I’ve compiled a list of Dos and Don’ts based on my experience — read on to check ‘em out, and please share your own Italian travel tips in the comments! Keep reading »

Shopping Guide: 7 Coats That Are Actually Waterproof For Reals

Waterproof Coats
Even though I grew up in Oregon, where the unofficial state motto is, “We’re always wet!” I’m not sure I have ever bought a truly waterproof jacket. I gravitate toward coats that look like they should be waterproof (my Gap anorak, for example), only to have them soak through and disintegrate in the lightest drizzle, like so many papier-mache art projects on the way to the school bus. A recent downpour in London made me realize that it’s time to get serious. I’m over being wet and cold and miserable, so I’ve rounded up some seriously waterproof jacket options. Not water-resistant. Not water-repellent. Waterproof. They may not be the cutest coats you’ve ever seen, but they will do their job diligently. Read on if you’d like to stay dry this fall…
