Boing Boing co-editor Xeni Jardin was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and started treatment–a brutal trifecta of chemo, surgery, and radiation–in January. When she finally finished, her friend Michael mentioned that she deserved a medal for her accomplishment. And then he made her one, complete with an inscription declaring her the winner of the “Poison, Cut, Burn Tri.” Jardin was thrilled: “I want to give one to everyone I meet who makes it through to a similarly meaningful milestone in their cancer treatment,” she says. “This is so much better than a pink ribbon.” Keep reading »

I grew up in a small, rural town where muddy trucks would cruise up and down main street with rifles mounted in the back window and country music blasting from the speakers. I grew up hating country music. I thought it was stupid, cheesy, and ignorant. To me, country music was the soundtrack to a conservative, small-town mentality that felt incredibly stifling. I tuned it out in favor of pop, rap, oldies, indie rock, and metal (for years my musical taste could be easily summed up as “Everything except country!”) until one day in 2003, when the Dixie Chicks caused a firestorm by speaking out against President Bush on stage. This was progressive, ballsy, the complete antithesis to everything I thought I knew about country music. I realized if these kinds of women were singing country songs, maybe it was time for me to reconsider my hatred for the genre. I slowly–and secretly–starting getting into country. Pretty soon I was asking friends for country recommendations and discovering that I have a serious banjo fetish.

This year I drove two-hundred miles roundtrip to attend a country music festival and even took a trip to Nashville to get my live banjo fix. My high school self would be stunned. Here are seven things I’ve learned to love about country music since my conversion to a proud country fan… Keep reading »

I’m so intrigued by the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between American and British culture, so I was pretty excited when Ellen Degeneres asked “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower” star Emma Watson about her experiences dating men on either side of the pond. Emma’s answer didn’t disappoint–check out the video to get the scoop! [YouTube via Just Jared]

I love the idea bringing some of Stevie Nicks’ witchy, bohemian style into your wardrobe (in fact, Julie did a Stevie Nicks Style Inspiration post a while back that was spot on), but Demi Lovato’s Stevie-inspired outfit is way too literal for everyday wear. On the bright side, if you were looking for ideas for your Stevie Nicks Halloween costume, well, here you go! [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

10 Untimely Pop Culture Halloween Costumes

I only recently discovered the amazing phenomenon that is “Friday Night Lights,” and more specifically, the glorious perfection that is Connie Briton as Tami Taylor. I told Amelia I wanted to be Tami Taylor for Halloween and hopefully win some kind of costume party prize for Least Timely Pop Culture Reference, but then Amelia threatened to dress up as Amelie and steal my crown. Bitch. Anyway, just in case you’re looking for a costume idea that’s neither current (like these internet obsessions) or cheekily retro, but instead falls awkwardly into the pop culture gulch of the past few years, well, click through for some delightfully outdated ideas…

Please Yield To The Space Shuttle

This weekend, the streets of Los Angeles were graced with a sight much more spectacular than the usual gridlock as the Space Shuttle Endeavor was moved to its new home at the California Science Center. As breathtaking as it is to see a space shuttle rounding a corner next to a Sizzler, my palms are sweating on behalf of whoever had to steer that thing. Seriously, look at the tiny amount of clearance between the wings and those light poles! So stressful. Check out more amazing shots of the move over at NASA’s Flickr page. [NASA]
