My lounge clothing wardrobe is currently made up solely of garments that have been retired from other parts of my wardrobe. Adidas workout pants with a hole in the crotch? Lounge pants! Sweater with a mustard stain on it? Lounging sweater! And while this technique has saved me a lot of money, it’s starting to make me feel really sloppy. I think it might be time to shell out for some lounge clothes that are actually cute. These plaid flannel pajama pants with a contrasting polka dot lining should do the trick. [$29.95, Aerie]
This holiday season, The Frisky staff is committed to giving back. Throughout the month of December we’ll be telling you about some of the charities and nonprofits that we support, why they’re important to us, and how you can support them too, if you’re so inclined. First up, Winona tells us why she believes in Girls Inc.!
Who they are: Girls Incorporated
What they do: Empower girls age 6 to 18 to achieve their full potential through mentoring and hands-on experiences.
Why I support them: Before I came to write full-time for The Frisky, I ran a program at Portland Community College that partnered with local high schools to get more teenage girls signed up in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classes. I met some really amazing young women who were excelling in science and technology (including a particularly gifted robotics club member who I’m convinced will grow up to be either the best President we’ve ever had or the most fearsome dictator the world has ever known), but I also saw a lot of girls falling into familiar patterns of silence, deferring to male classmates, and opting out of high level math and science classes because they were uninterested or intimidated… Keep reading »
Sure, your plastic iPhone case might look stylish and keep your phone safe from cracks and scratches, but it has one major design flaw: you can’t eat it. That’s where the Senbei Survival iPhone Case comes in. Designed and developed by a Japanese baker, the survival case is made of rice and salt, and doubles as a nutritious treat in the event that you become trapped somewhere and find yourself slowly starving to death. Sounds like a sweet deal, right? The only problem is the rice cracker phone case is so fragile, its chances of making it through your morning commute–let alone a natural disaster–are slim to none. The product website explains the likelihood of the case breaking is 89% if you put it in your pocket, 50% if you try to turn up the volume on your phone, 18% if you use the touchscreen, oh, and one more thing: there’s a 9% chance it will break in the box while being delivered to your house. Still, it seems that people are willing to overlook these minor issues for a chance to munch on their iPhone cases: the phone has already sold out at select retailers. [Daily Mail]
Ever since Amy Poehler and Will Arnett split up (must … hold … back … tears), Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka have ascended the throne to become my #1 Top Favorite Hollywood Couple. Their relationship seems genuine, respectful, and playful, and seeing them with their adorable twins Gideon and Harper make me wish they were my dads. Oh, and did I mention they’re both mad stylish? I’m loving the tailored suits and plaid ties they wore to the White House Christmas Tree Lighting in DC this week. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
So, let’s say the world actually is going to end on December 21st, as predicted by the Mayan calendar maker whose carving hand got tired and finally said, “Fuck this, I’m getting a drink.” How would you want to spend your last hours on Earth? A quiet night in with family and friends? Watching one final sunset over the ocean? Confessing a lifetime of sins to your priest? Putting the finishing touches on your apocalypse survival kit? How about horfing a platter of loaded potato skins and pounding “Mayan Margaritas” with a bunch of rowdy douchebags at T.G.I. Friday’s? Yep, this meaningful end-of-the-world experience can be yours, thanks to T.G.I. Friday’s “The Last Friday” apocalypse party, which includes a special “Mayan Menu,” thumping dance music, giveaways, and a photobooth. Last Friday parties are scheduled in Chicago, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, Tampa, and Orlando, so if you want to join in the hedonist hoedown, book your tickets now. As for me, if I somehow find myself at a T.G.I. Friday’s apocalypse party, I will take it as proof the world actually did end, and hell is way worse than I ever imagined. [Zagat]
This whimsical ornament chandelier would be a great way to display those extra ornaments that are rolling around the bottom of your Christmas decorations box, but it would be even more fun to hit the thrift store and craft a chandelier out of the most ridiculous ornaments you can find. Can you imagine a sparkling bundle of Dollywood souvenir ornaments? Talk about a conversation piece. [Real Simple]
Starting in February of next year, when you bring in a bag of old clothes to H&M, the company will recycle them for you and you’ll be rewarded with a discount voucher to buy some new ones. Pretty cool, right? The clothing exchange discount is part of H&M’s new iCollect recycling program, which aims to reduce the massive amount of waste produced by the clothing industry. Not only is the plan good for the earth, it’s also a smart PR move: you might remember a couple years ago when H&M found itself in hot water after The New York Times revealed the company routinely destroyed unsold clothing–including winter coats and gloves–that would gladly be accepted by shelters and charities.
