My boyfriend and I have been together for just under 2 ½ years and at the risk of sounding gag-arrific, I’ve really never been happier. Not only do we love each other, but we actually like each other a lot, too — two things I’ve learned don’t always go hand in hand. We have tons in common, have a great time together, always make each other laugh, and never run out of stuff to talk about. Among some of our topics of conversations are: vacation plans, buying a place in Brooklyn, having kids (when, why, and what to name them), and whether, when we’re old and gray, we’ll be like the senior couples we see in the park sometimes who hold hands on the bench and swap sections of the Sunday New York Times. One of the topics that doesn’t crop up in our conversations very much, despite everything else we discuss, is marriage, something it seems like a lot of people — my family, especially — can’t seem to understand.

Was anyone else as horrified by Kenley’s behavior on last night’s episode of “Project Runway” as I was? This week, Ellen DeGeneres was announced as the new face of CoverGirl. While I’m a big fan of the very out and very outspoken talk show host, I feel a little uneasy about where CoverGirl is really coming from with their latest cover girl choice. Without a doubt, DeGeneres is likable, quirky, relatable — heck, she’s even “easy breezy.” But hawking a major cosmetics brand? I don’t know. To me, it feels gimmicky and phony, like a marketing ploy, in the same way the Dove campaign for “real beauty” did. As it turned out, Dove airbrushed those real women into oblivion. I didn’t buy that Dove ever thought real women with real cellulite and real curves were really beautiful. Nor do I buy that CoverGirl really thinks Ellen is representative of their very airbrushed All-American girl image. I mean, it’d be one thing if she were a lipstick lesbian, but does Ellen even like makeup? Maybe she does. Maybe she doesn’t. But I’m willing to bet she’s not hung up on it. Color me cynical, but using unconventional beauty to sell products designed to bring women closer to the ideal standard of conventional beauty just seems disingenuous to me. So what do you think? There was a period in my early twenties, not too long after college graduation, and even sooner after the painful break-up of my first real relationship, that I hopscotched through a series of dead-end jobs (seven in four months!), dated recklessly, and pumped my body with substances I wouldn’t clean a carburetor with these days. Well, if the European Parliament has anything to do with it, our friends on the other side of the pond may not have the good fortune of gazing at Beckham’s chiseled abs in glossies and on the sides of buses for much longer. Earlier this month, the Parliament voted in favor of a report drafted by the Women’s Rights Committee that aims to more tightly monitor nudity in marketing campaigns and to end the use of gender stereotypes.

When Sarah Palin addressed the nation last week at the RNC, the first female Republican VP candidate introduced a topic to the campaign I doubt most people ever saw coming. This week, it isn’t off-shore drilling, the war in Iraq, or even abortion rights that people are talking about, it’s lipstick. Thanks to Palin, we now know it’s what separates the hockey moms from the pit bulls, but as Obama reminded us a few days ago, lipstick won’t stop a pig from being a pig, a remark that’s prompted a heated debate and even brand new political ads. Surely, with all this focus on lipstick, it’s just a matter of time before someone comes out with one named after Palin. But why stop with just her? Wired.com recently created an algorithm widget-thingamajig called Celebrity Meter, which will tell you exactly how internet famous you are by tallying the number of webpages linking to you and how many friends you have on various social networks. But before you go running off to calculate whether you’re famous enough to need an alias the next time you make dinner reservations or a bodyguard when you go out in public, think about what it actually means to be internet famous. Will designers start clamoring to dress you? Will the tabloids start seeing a ‘baby bump’ every time you indulge in a burger? And will John McCain spoof you in his next campaign ad? Just how different is internet fame from real life fame? To get a better idea, let’s compare two archetypes: Julia Allison, who’s internet famous (and WIRED Magazine’s covergirl this month), and Jessica Simpson who’s real life famous. All this talk about polyamory has convinced me it’s time to confess a rather intimate secret: I’m a fan of Swingtown on CBS.
