Science Confirms The Identity Of Richard III’s Remains

DNA tests have confirmed “beyond a reasonable doubt” that the remains found last year underneath a parking lot in Leicester do in fact belong to Richard III, the notorious hunchback/(possible) nephew-killer and last English king to die in battle. He was also the subject of Shakespeare’s Richard III and, more amusingly (not that Richard III didn’t have its moments), a pair of Kate Beaton history comics.

Archaeologists at the University of Leicester already believed that the remains belonged to the king, who died in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field, due to their “famed spinal curvature” and fatal battle wounds. But it took a blessed union of science and history to prove it. Read more…

J.J. Abramspalooza: He’s Producing A Third “Star Trek,” Doing 2 TV Pilots And, Oh Yeah, “Star Wars: Episode VII” Is Confirmed

Sorry if you don’t like J.J. Abrams. You must be having a rough time of it right now.

First things first, the rumor that he’s directing “Star Wars: Episode VII” is no longer a rumor: Disney has confirmed it.

In a press release sent out by the Mouse House, LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy sung her praises of Abrams, saying:

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

In one case they even responded in a particularly awesome way. But now they have another message for you: Cut it out, guys. It’s getting tired.

You Can Watch The Final 3 Episodes Of “Downton Abbey” Early Thanks To iTunes

If you were annoyed at having to wait three months for “Downton Abbey” Season 3 to hit PBS, you’re going to love this news. Apple is set to offer the final three episodes of the season before they air. Could this work for other shows?

The wait was painful but didn’t seem to affect viewership in the least. The premiere pulled in a record-breaking 7.9 million viewers. So what’s with the last three episodes being “leaked” before they play on PBS?

The BBC reports that while the final episode of Season 3 is set to premiere February 17, Apple will offer the final three episodes starting January 29. The catch is you’ll have to buy a “season pass” for the show on iTunes to get them. Read more…

Sisters Separated By WWII And 70 Years, Reunited By Facebook

Facebook giveth and Facebook taketh away. For every story about it doing slightly creepy things or haphazardly enforced content restrictions, there’s a story like this. Tanija Delic and Hedija Talic are 88- and 82-year-old sisters who haven’t seen each other since 1941, when their family was separated while fleeing their home in Bosnia at the outbreak of war. Seventy-two years later, the internet has brought them back together again.

After losing her family, Talic was raised in an orphanage. The girls’ parents died during the war, and a brother emigrated to the United States, and despite her best efforts, Talic couldn’t find any hard information on her family once she was old enough to ask. Read more…

I’ve been telling myself to stay out of this debate. I’ve been assuring myself that any time spent reading rants, posts, and their circular comments will only make me feel resentful and defensive. I tell myself that the fight is over and no one won. I rationalize that only a few people are ruining it for the rest of us and therefore, those few should just be ignored. I vow to stop drawing attention to this ridiculous creature, to stop reinforcing the idea that the “Fake Geek Girl” exists.

“Why don’t you just drop it?” “Why can’t you take a joke?” “Why aren’t you over this?” I ask myself these things too.

Victoria’s Secret model Cameron Russell gives honest answers to questions about the superficiality—and the importance—of physical appearance in our society. Speaking as someone who fully acknowledges her success stems from her winning the “genetic lottery,” Russell’s perspective is quite interesting. My favorite part is when she explains what she wants to say to little girls when they tell her they want to be a model: That they should instead aspire to ”Be my boss. Because I’m not in charge of anything. And you could be the editor-in-chief of American Vogue or the CEO of H&M or the next [legendary fashion photographer] Steven Meisel.”
