Nintendo’s New 3DS Campaign Aims For Female Gamers With Gabrielle Douglas And Other Stars

What do All-Around Olympian gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, “Glee”‘s Diana Agron, and “Modern Family”‘s Sarah Hyland have in common? They’re just a a few of the celebrity names to appear in Nintendo‘s new female-targeted ad campaign for their 3DS and 3DSXL hand-held systems. The campaign, called “Play As You Are” is using talented, visible women to draw in players who might otherwise be turned off to gaming. Read more…

Wikipedia, Your Gender Bias Is Showing

Women of the Internet, start your editing engines. If it’s one thing we’ve learned recently from go-to Web info source Wikipedia, it’s that what the user-edited encyclopedia could use more of is you.

Researcher Santiago Oritz has developed Wikipedia Gender, “an interactive visualization that shows which articles have more male or female editors”. The graph matrix runs the spectrum of user ratio against female-to-male, with scrollover dots and a color key that help identify specific subjects. Two things immediately become clear: First, that the number of male editors far outweighs female editors (as reported by the New York Times earlier this year, women make up just 13% of total contributors). Two, that, apparently, the only subjects where the ratio almost levels out are on drastically female-body-oriented subjects like menstruation, or, for reasons that could perhaps merit their own article, gender identity. In fact, of the 3,000 articles analyzed by Ortiz, the only article that has a female majority is the one for the Cloth Menstrual Pad. Understandable, but….yikes. Read more …

The Adorable Kid From “Charlie & The Chocolate Factory” Is Going To Play Norman Bates

Freddie Highmore, whose adorable mug you may remember from “Finding Neverland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” has just secured a role in A&E’s “Psycho” prequel. The actor will be playing Norman Bates.

We previously heard not only was this prequel, called ”Bates Motel,” actually happening, but they were already far into the casting stage. Vera Farmiga is set to play Norman’s mother, Norma, in the series. Read more…

Amy Mebberson Shows That Disney Characters Can Wear High-Fashion

Amy Mebberson is a frequent staple of our Things We Saw Today posts, an artist who not only uses her spare time to create adorable Disney and Muppets crossover art, but who draws a lot of Disney stuff professionally, from being the regular cover artist for Boom! Studios’ Muppets, Pixar, Darkwing Duck and other Disney titles, to her current stint as the artist on APE Entertainment’s Strawberry Shortcake and Sesame Street comics. Mebberson took issue with Barney’s New York’s recently unveiled designs for a holiday window display using classic Disney characters like Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck. The problem was the drastic redesign that stretched the characters’ limbs to creepy lengths and rendered Minnie and Daisy rail thin everywhere but their heads. So, she decided to provide an alternative. Read more…

RIP Jerry Nelson, “Muppet Show,” “Sesame Street,” “Fraggle Rock” Veteran

You might not recognize Jerry Nelson‘s name, but you’re probably more familiar with “Sesame Street”’s the Count, Amazing Mumford and Snuffalupagus, or Statler (half of the heckling duo of Statler and Waldorf), Floyd Pepper (the mustachioed guitar player in the Muppet Show house band), Lew Zealand (that guy who chucks fish), Gobo Fraggle, Robin the Frog, or maybe even Emmet Otter. Though he may never have had roles as iconic to the Muppets as some of his colleagues, his long, long history with the group touches almost everything they’ve ever done. He passed away yesterday after a long period of declining health, at the age of seventy-eight.

And that’s certainly a good enough reason to collect a few videos of his characters and share them. Read more…

Double Standard Central: Everyone Needs To Stop Freaking Out About The Kristen Stewart Thing

Kristen Stewart photo

I don’t really need to tell you what’s going on with Kristen Stewart right now. If you have an Internet connection, you know. She cheated on “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders, the married director of “Snow White and the Huntsman.” The scandal has given birth to a plethora of gossip rag covers, a few awkward TV interviews and speculation on how the final film in the “Twilight” franchise might be affected by the breakup of its stars.

I don’t want to talk about any of those things.

With everybody—from gossip hubs like Perez Hilton and TMZ to legitimate bastions of entertainment journalism like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter—keeping the public informed about the (possibly career-ruining, if reports can be believed) scandal, what gets me most curious about this whole thing is why people care so much. Probably The Most Appropriately Made Portrait Of Daenerys Targaryen

Why is Fay Helfer‘s art so appropriate for Daenerys? Well, it has to do with how she produced those dark flowing lines: with fire. She uses a heated tip to burn her lines into wood, just like those hobby kits that your parents would never buy you when you were a kid because they were covered with warnings. Fortunately, you will not need parental supervision to view Helfer’s art right here. And don’t miss a special tabletop gaming surprise at the end. Read more…

Vintage Photos Of Stylish, Norm Challenging, Tattooed Women

Although women have achieved a certain level of freedom to decorate their bodies as they wish in modern society, the scandal of getting a tattoo or a piercing wasn’t always limited to unruly teens going against their parents’ wishes. At best, the subject of strange glances on the street, and at worst, the subject of ridicule, tattooed women bucked societal norms in order to decorate their skin as they saw fit, paving the way for today’s inked chicks. Here are some great old photos of some lovely ladies with awesome tatts! Click here to see more photos

Bobak Ferdowsi, NASA’s “Mohawk Guy,” Is The Best At Being A Meme

A lot of great things have come from Curiosity’s mission on mars: Further recognition of human ingenuity, the promise of a better understanding of our universe, some adorable fanart. And then there’s Bobak. Flight director Bobak Ferdowsi, seen above sporting a mohawk and a smile that’ll make your knees buckle, is practically the new Ridiculously Photogenic Guy he has won the Internet’s heart so thoroughly. He’s become a meme and a symbol of nerdy hotness, and in the week since the Curiosity rover’s landing on Mars he’s receives thousands of replies on twitter–as well as a whole lot of marriage proposals. People Upset By The Appearance Of Olympic Athletes, Set Straight By The Athletes Themselves

Last week we posted about our rage over the utterly ridiculous (and unfounded) complaints circulating the web over Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas‘ hair. As we wrote it we were kind of secretly hoping that we were blowing it out of proportion, that it was a small enough story that it would never get back to Douglas herself. No such luck. Douglas has most certainly heard about the unflattering attention her hair has been getting by some, and she’s responded in kind. Click through the jump to see what she has to say, along with some other Olympic athletes who have been receiving some less-than-flattering attention based on their appearance. Read more…
