Are Noughties The New Feminists?

The Times says there’s a new brand of feminist on the march: Noughties. Instead of old school feminism, in which, to varying degrees, women worked together to achieve a common goal, the new new feminism is like a gender politics remix: “It’s like a pick-and-mix feminism, where you can choose the bits you care about yourself.” Want to wear lipstick? Go for it. Want to grow your armpit hair out? Why not. Theoretically, at least, there’s no “bad” or “good” feminists, but a rainbow of feminist beliefs from which women can pick and choose as they see fit, whether it’s sexual politics in the bedroom or protesting against discrimination in the streets. While this new brand of feminism sounds a lot like the late 90′s post-feminist movement to me, the neo-feminists promise theirs is a diverse movement within which all women can finally unite. So, what do you think? Is feminism dead in the water, or is it alive and kicking? [Times] Keep reading »

Are Men Turning Into Jerks?

According to Details, decades of feminism and political correctness have turned 21st century guys into total pigs. Because they’ve been forced to play Mr. Nice Guy and suppress their baser, manlier instincts for years, today’s men are starting to revert back to some of their less politically correct, more misogynist ways. Take, for example, “Dave”: “Dave, who was in college during the P.C. era of the early nineties, is part of a generation of men who have started to wonder why they’ve been so damn well-behaved all these years — and are now letting their long-repressed roguish instincts run free.” When Dave’s not busy being married and “co-parenting” his kids, he’s sneaking off to massage parlors for “happy endings.” What it means to be a man is no longer clear, and that’s causing a return to traditionalism. (Think Don Draper incarnate.) Tired of “Yes, Dear”-ing their wives, these guys are saying to hell with all that. (Take, for example, Guy Ritchie.) So what do you think? Are men regressing into jerkhood? [Details] Keep reading »

Why Guys Have A Hard Time Saying The L-Word

When it comes to saying “I love you,” one writer reports, men are universally conflicted. If asked how many times they’ve been in love, some men can’t make up their minds. He loves you? He loves you not? Sometimes, he’s not too sure. After all, it’s not easy for either sex to differentiate between love and lust, intimacy and infatuation, what the mind wants to believe and what the heart insists is true. When Mick Jagger was asked how many times he’d fallen in love, he deemed the question “stupid.” Boy George, in contrast, said his number was zero. So, how can men and women tell if they’re really, truly in love? When “the words ‘I love you’ tumble from you like obscenities from the mouth of a Tourette’s sufferer.” Sounds like true love to me. Coco Rocha Has A Blog

Model of the moment Coco Rocha has a blog: Oh So Coco. The 20-year-old, Toronto-born model, who once famously Irish stepdanced down Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway, offers a peek behind the scenes at days in the life of a fashion plate. She hopes a woman on the street who takes her photograph, sans makeup, has Photoshop, posts a video of herself dancing around while brushing her teeth, and reveals that Vogue had the exclusive rights to her new red hair, so she had to keep it under wraps until the January issue hit the newsstands. For other fashion icons online, check out Chanel Iman‘s YouTube channel and Hedi Slimane‘s diary. [The Cut] Keep reading »

Carrie Bradshaw Is Dead

Once upon a time, Carrie Bradshaw was a role model for women across America, and “Sex and the City” promised a Manolos and men-filled life. Even after the show was canceled, it lived on in reruns, and the movie version brought lady viewers back in droves. Now, though, the recession promises to finally put to bed women’s “Sex and the City” pipe dreams, or so says Vanity Fair, when one male writer takes a ride on the “SATC” bus tour. From a sad visit to the sex shop where Charlotte bought her Rabbit vibrator to the Magnolia Bakery cupcake-eating gaggle of female tourists who ragingly recount every single episode, some women are still desperately trying to hold on to “Sex and the City” escapism, instead of sinking into the reality of the great 21st century depression. By the end of the tour of this female fantasyland that never really existed: “We all realize what an obsessively ridiculous, embarrassing, empty, and needy exercise this has been.” Us, too. Please Don’t Do That In This Abercrombie & Fitch Store, Ma’am

An upset woman who was informed there was no restroom in a Northern California Bay Area Abercrombie & Fitch store urinated in a changing room. The tall, Caucasian blond in her 40s entered the Corte Madera store, asked if she could use the bathroom, and when told there wasn’t one, retrieved a 5-gallon bucket from a display, and absconded to a dressing room with it. After the woman emerged, store employees discovered the bucket, along with $300 worth of Abercrombie & Fitch clothing the woman had placed in it. Oddly, the woman, who was on probation for theft and drug offenses, returned the next day, claiming she had no knowledge of what had happened the previous day. Abercrombie & Fitch declined to press charges. [Pipeline] Keep reading »

Christina Aguilera’s Citizen K Cover Qualifies Her For 2008 Photoshop Awards

Christina Aguilera is nearly unrecognizable on the cover of the Fall/Winter issue of Citizen K magazine. One could peruse the full set before realizing the otherworldly looking blond is the pop-songstress, her facial features and body proportions rescaled, tweaked, and airbrushed into identity-altering dimensions. And these days, when it comes to the Photoshop awards, women are not the only contenders. Alongside Britney Spears, Madonna, and Jessica Alba, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are getting the Photoshopped-into-oblivion treatment, too. Feminists have long said that women are held to ridiculous expectations when it comes to their looks — but nowadays it seems like men are being expected to look a lot more like robots than humans. So what do you think? Are men increasingly being held to the same scrutiny as women in terms of their physical appearance? Keep reading »

Guy Gets Dumped Via His Blog

“Sean recorded private webcam conversations with his girlfriend and put them on his blog. When she finds out, things go from bad to worse.” I’m not going to spoil “Dumped” by saying too much about it, but suffice to say it’s about a guy who gets dumped, and it has a surprising twist. Thanks to Kasia at Current for sending it. Keep reading »

Tom Ford’s Rules Of Style

Style icon Tom Ford gives the latest issue of Details his personal rules of style. As the man best known for resurrecting the Gucci brand and bringing back glam and whose latest turn is as a Hollywood movie director, Ford knows a thing or two about cultivating personal style. While he gears this set of tips towards the fashionably-minded male population, many of his suggestions would be well-heeded by fashionistas, as well: being a good listener is sexy, dress yourself intuitively, and Botox can be a blessing. Of course, it wouldn’t be Ford if he didn’t offer up something totally outrageous. In his final tip on the list, he advises: “There’s one indulgence every man should try in his lifetime: If you’re straight, sleep with a man at least once, and if you’re gay, don’t go through life without sleeping with a woman.” He adds: “In the end, it’s just another person that you are relating to in a physical way.” Oh, Tom. You’ll always be our number one HILF. So do you think Tom’s last tip should apply to women, too? Should a straight women sleep with a woman at least once in her lifetime, and should a lesbian sleep with a man at least once in her lifetime? [The Cut] Keep reading »
