The Parents Television Council (PTC) isn’t set to release the report, “Reality of MTV: Gender Portrayals on Reality TV,” until this Wednesday, but Fox News got a sneak peak in advance and has summarized the findings. (Jezebel accurately commented that their report provides an early view of the study through “an additional layer of puritanical hysteria.”) The PTC studied one season each of the top four prime-time shows viewed by 12- to 17-year-old adolescents – ”Jersey Shore,” “16 and Pregnant,” “Teen Mom 2,” and “The Real World” – and collected a bounty of not so surprising statistics. Most prominently, it the report found that the majority of crude or negative remarks came from female cast members. Only 24 percent of the comments made by females in regards to themselves were positive, and women spoke about sex more frequently and graphically than males. Keep reading »

Watch this video clip from Kris Humphries‘ appearance on “Good Morning America.” The reporter practically broke a bone in his attempt to steer the conversation back to Kim K. every five seconds. Kris — obviously coached beforehand — managed to deflect all of his attempts marvellously, only going as far as to say, “Certain things happen in life and you gotta move forward.” Good for you, Kris. Having an abortion does not increase a woman’s chance of developing mental health problems, a British health agency has found. The U.K.’s National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health compared a number of studies conducted worldwide in the past 20 years and found that in cases of unwanted pregnancy, women who chose abortion were no more likely to develop disorders like depression and anxiety than those who gave birth. Research does point to an increase in mental disorders in women with unwanted pregnancies in general, with approximately one in three women with unwanted pregnancies diagnosed with such disorders. These statistics did not rise, however, in the cases in which women underwent abortion. Keep reading »

For the first time in eight years, the network hosting the Super Bowl has actually accepted the preliminary script for GoDaddy.com’s bro-tastic commercial pitches. Six racy “Internet only” commercials later — including one rejected commercial with a “beaver” entrendre — I’m still trying to align my neck after all of that strategic screen blocking. GoDaddy certainly isn’t unique in its marketing of sex, especially during the biggest football game of the year. It’s just their total lack of cleverness that normally cushions the hot-girls-performing-exaggerated-sexuality-for-guys message that make them more crude.

Oh yes, there is another rom-com chock-full of celebs is heading our way. Watch the trailer for “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” and pray, as I am, that it offers more than the few slapstick jokes and one-liners shown here. “What To Expect,” slated to release in May 2012,  follows five  couples as they deal with first-time pregnancy and discover along the way that the classic baby book doesn’t exactly cover all of the bases. The ensemble cast includes Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, J. Lo, Ben Falcone, Thomas Lennon, Cameron Diaz, Chris Rock, Joe Manganiello, Chase Crawford, Dennis Quaid, Matthew Morrison … and the list goes on. It’s a decent ratio of funny people to beautiful people, though I generally find that bigger does not mean better when cast size is involved. (Case in point, “New Years Eve”‘s lackluster reviews!) Rachel Vermillion, a senior at Bringham Brigham Young University in Idaho, was barred from taking a final exam because a male college employee deemed her skinny jeans too tight and not in compliance with the campuses Dress and Grooming Standards. Dress codes are to be expected at a Mormon college. However, Rachel had worn the same outfit all day and had not only taken another exam earlier, but had met with a LDS bishop in regards to congregational business. If the world’s most awkward kiss wasn’t enough to garner your interest in TLC’s “The Virgin Diaries,” how about three virgin roommates pushing 30? Actually, two virgins and one “reclaimed virgin.” Tamara, 29, has had sex with all seven of her previous boyfriends, though has abstained from sex in the last couple of years. I believe that’s called celibacy, but whatever floats your boat, honey. Tamara didn’t give a clear reason for her abstinence, though did say, “I actually feel like such a different person than I was even from the last time that I did have sex with someone, so I almost feel like it will be like I never had sex before.” Her roommate, Lisa, commented, “I don’t think it works quite like that.”
