job posting 3.20.2013

Sexism in the workplace is manifested in a slew of ways: pay inequality, dress code regulations, getting hit on by your boss. In this case, on the site Australia InfoMine, sexism reared its ugly head before the job even started! According to News.Com.Au, the first requirement on a posting for the Korean coal company Pt. Karya Bumi Baratama is that receptionist applicants  be “female, single, max 25 years old.”

While the post does ask for appropropriate qualities such as an education “from reputable university” and “good interpersonal and communication skill,” it rounds itself out with the last bullet point asking for the candidate to be “good looking.”  Keep reading »

Happy belated birthday to Supreme Court Justice Bader Ginsburg!  There are so many reasons to love the two-time cancer survivor Justice: from her stance on reproductive rights, to holding it down as the solo woman on the court for three years (post-Sandra Day O’Connor, pre-Sonia Sotomayor).

Yesterday March 19, The Washington Post revealed another endearing insight: the octogenarian sees personal trainer, Bryant Johnson, twice a week.   Keep reading »

Nerd alert!  I feel very “Lord of the Rings” whenever I read about the “fall” of men: dramatic, old fashioned, and spoken in Cate Blanchett’s voice.  And the conversation (like the trilogy) seems never-ending.  From Hanna Rosin’s book The End of Men to Charles Murray’s Coming Apart, everybody must add their two cents about why male incomes as a whole are declining.

So here’s mine.  I personally find this male-centric view frustrating.  Yes, according to a 2010 USA Today article, women are entering institutions of higher education at record-high rates, surrpassing that of men. Though I may think, Who cares?  Men have been dominating for millennia!, economists are worried about employment eligibility and opportunity for men. As reported by The New York Times, a new study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor David H. Autor, takes a stab at explaining this puzzling societal problem. Keep reading »

If you abuse your partner you deserve some serious jail-time.  Nobody could argue with that.  Yet, according to The New York Post, the New York Police Department’s method of getting a victim to cooperate and close a case could potentially do more harm than good.

According to the Post, a March 5 memo written by Chief of Detectives Phil Pulaski outlines the tactic: background check both the victim and perp.  If the victim has any outstanding warrants use that to sway them from backing out of police cooperation.  According to the Post’s source, “They want us to use that as leverage to force them to remain cooperative,” close a case and put an abusive partner behind bars. Zerlina Maxwell Fox 3.19.2013
Zerlina Speaks Out!

Feministing blogger Zerlina Maxwell is a survivor of rape. Last week, Maxwell appeared with Sean Hannity on Fox News and what she said on the show generated some racist, misogynist comments and both rape threats and death threats. Her “controversial” comment? She said, “I think we should be telling men not to rape women and start the conversation there with prevention.”

That’s not OK to say, apparently: it poked the hornet’s nest of our society’s long held, deeply flawed ideas about rape as well as squeamish attitudes when it comes to discussing it.

Zerlina Maxwell, we at The Frisky stand with you.  Men should be taught not to rape. Here are three misconceptions about rape that she schooled Sean Hannity and his viewers on in the exchange: Keep reading »

If you’re wondering where society went wrong, the uber-conservative, anti-gay Family Research Council has an idea: it was when the Supreme Court overturned a law that banned the sale of birth control to — gasp! — unmarried folks.

This week, FRC senior fellow Pat Fagan appeared on the radio show ”Washington Watch to blast premarital sex. “Society never gave young people that right,” he ranted. ”Functioning societies don’t do that, they stop it, they punish it, they corral people, they shame people, they do whatever.”  The right for single, consenting adults to have sex, that is.

Good thing this guy told us so now we know: we have no right to have sex out of wedlock. Whoopsies. [MediaiteHuffington Post]

Welcome to the 21st century, Virginia! Despite the Supreme Court ruling in 2003 that state law can not deem sexual relations between consenting adults a “crime,” VA has continued to do so for 10 years — until this week.  An appeals court finally nixed the state’s anti-sodomy law regulating “crimes against nature,” which criminalized anal and oral sex between consenting adults. The law was basically seen as a justification for VA authorities to further persecute gay and lesbian folks. Well, that is no more. Commit all the crimes against nature (between consenting adults, of course) that you want! [Huffington Post, Queerty]

I still don’t know why Kim Kardashian is famous, but I’m sure as hell glad she is. Without her, we’d lack someone to carry Kanye’s baby or a reason to care about Lord Scott Disick. But just in case your life, like mine, does not have Kim everywhere, you need a completely ridiculous iPhone case of “crying Kim.” They’re from Etsy.com, of course.  I have no words. It sums up everything we feel about Kim: love her enough to put her on a phone, but not without a hint of spite in the form of an awkward crying photo. [Etsy.com]

A new defense secretary has just been confirmed and already he has a big issue to address: sexual assault in the military. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) (Full disclosure: I used to work in her office), and Senator Janeane Shaheen (D-NH) recently sent a letter requesting Chuck Hagel immediately review a decision by an Air Force Lieutenant General to dismiss all charges against an officer who had been convicted of sexual assault.

Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkerson, a fighter pilot, had been charged with aggravated sexual assault on former colleague Kimberly Hanks at Aviano Air Base in Italy. Hanks had been socializing with Wilkerson and his wife at their home and stayed the evening in their guest bedroom; in the middle of the night, she woke up to find Wilkerson on top of her. He was found guilty and sentenced to a year in the brig (AKA military prison). But he never served any time in prison because his superior, Lieutenant General Craig A. Franklin, dismissed the jury’s conviction and reinstated him. Senators Boxer and Shaheen and others are rightfully concerned that a troop charged with sexual assault was let off scot-free.
