Anne Hathaway’s Strong Brow And Eye: Does It Work?

Last night, the celebs turned out in droves for the world premiere of the Tim/Burton/Johnny Depp movie “Alice in Wonderland” in London. Check out the always red-carpet-chic Anne Hathaway. Quick, what’s the first thing you notice? If you’re me, it’s her seriously strong brows (that’s a lot of brow pencil/shadow at work) and equally major eye makeup. Personally, I’m not a fan. While I love that almost all of the fall shows have featured a strong eyebrow look, the Fashion Week makeup artists also took care to only overdo the brow. They didn’t play up anything else on the face, and that’s the key. (The key Anne missed in her makeup.) What say you? It’s a powerful look, for sure, but a little too overpowering … Keep reading »

Send A Little Green In The Mail

A postcard + pop-up card + garden = Postcarden! It’s pretty much just that, but also a completely unusual way to send along a little big of greenery. Each comes with a packet of cress seeds—add water and watch the seeds grow—and choose between three models: botanical, city, and allotment. The mini-gardens last about two weeks, and the cress is totally edible. It’s currently only available in the UK, but it is making it’s way to us very soon. Selma Blair was spotted at The Gap yesterday with a brand-new haircut. Look quickly and it appears to be a very Anna Wintour-esque bob. But if you look a bit closer, her hair is reminiscent of Agyness Deyn‘s bowl cut, too. I’m nicknaming it the “bowl-bob.” Check out the fringe cut down the front sides; her bangs are gradually blending into the length of her hair with a series of layers or fringe. Feeling her look? Ask your stylist for a bob with a thick bang and long layers for movement and to decrease the weight on your hair so it doesn’t fall flat. Then tell him/her you want to blend your bangs into the rest of the do—ask him to cut front fringe à la a bowl cut. Keep reading »

Uber-Easy Flower Arranging From Erin Fetherston

Serious spring fever hitting lately. I can’t wait to wear filmy, silky dresses and striped flat espadrilles, braid my won’t-grow-fast-enough hair to the side, and fill my teeny apt with loads of bright and cheery flowers. I’ve got most of my spring prep done (got these striped espadrilles the other day), and I plan on stealing this flower “tub” arrangement idea from designer Erin Fetherston‘s Paris apartment. It should be relatively easy to do. Get a giant, round and squat vase. Look for flowers that aren’t too pricey with big blossoms (I love peonies from my corner deli). Cut the stems so the blossoms ever so slightly peek above the rim of the vase. Stand flowers up in the water-filled vase, the more the better, and keep it natural by avoiding over-pruning. The Swedish creative agency Acne (you may already know them for their indie fashions and jeans) has unveiled its first furniture collection. Inspired by the company’s Swedish roots, they took a classic sofa design by Swede Carl Malmsten and literally stretched, squashed, and pulled it. The Natural Spray Tan — It Exists!

The newest, latest, and greatest in spray tans is the “weekend away” tan. In a move away from the L.A. Oompa-Loompas and perma-pumpkin folk, the “weekend away” tan is just a tiny bit of color. Subtle. Spotted all over the actresses at the BAFTAs (Kate Winslet, Audrey Tautou, Claire Danes, and Carey Mulligan), the low-key look was a bit of bronze on only those body parts that are directly and naturally hit by the sun. It wasn’t intense color, either, but the amount you would get from a weekend trip. No weirdly bronzed armpits, no “Jersey Shore” all over day-glo, and none of the orange-brown residue left between your fingers. To get this look, it’s all about going for the least deep spray color available and getting a real-live person to spray you (the booths will give you a solid, all-over tan). Ask to be sprayed only where the sun would naturally hit: upper arms, across the nose and cheeks, shoulders, etc. Perfect for spring, no? Keep reading »
