9 Animal Movies To Make You Weep

Sad movies exist in every genre. Romance is obviously full of weepers, and plenty of dramas have enjoyed yanking your heart out and showing it to you as you stagger out of the theater. Even an action or sports movie can reduce the tough to tears if done right. (“Field of Dreams,” anyone?)

But there’s one little genre that seems hellbent on making us cry, and that’s animal movies. They’re fiendishly clever about it, too, luring you in with promises of being child-friendly, heartwarming and fun before killing off a fuzzy protagonist or two. They’re worse than horror movies, because at least horror is honest about the body count.

In honor of taking the plunge (again!) with ”Finding Nemo 3D,” we have compiled nine of the most heartbreaking animal weepers in cinematic history. Read it only if you have something soft to hug. Read more…

Toronto Film Festival: The Verdict On The Movies You’re Dying To See

It’s become fairly common knowledge that the unofficial awards season kicks off with the Toronto International Film Festival. Critics and film fans alike have all eyes on the Canadian city as studios launch their Oscar hopefuls and indies look for distributors.

With films like “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The King’s Speech” having made their international debuts at the fest, the movies showing this year are among those we can’t wait to see this fall — in fact, we listed 20 of them before TIFF even kicked off. So, how did they fare? Well, here’s what the reviewers from our sister site, Film.com, had to say…

“The Place Beyond the Pines” — B: Starring: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Rose Byrne and Eva Mendes. There is true beauty in the despair that pervades “The Place Beyond the Pines,” a treatise on the compromises we all make to protect and provide for our loved ones. Read more…

15 Accidental Hipsters In Movies

The hipster formula is as follows: If exclusivity is cool and hideous fashion is undesirable, then adopting hideous fashions because they are undesirable makes one exclusive. And this exclusivity, in turn, makes one cool. Now apply this philosophy to everything you own and… voila! You are a hipster! You will now be in the market for a Polaroid camera and declare that you were listening to bands no one’s heard of before it was cool to listen to bands no one’s heard of.

For those too square to know, hipsters are currently stuck on a nostalgic obsession with both the 1980s and 1880s, adopting the silliest and most anachronistic fashion choices of both simultaneously. The result is a horrifying mix of big glasses, curly mustaches, tight T-shirts and brimmed hats. We couldn’t help but notice that Shia LaBeouf’s Prohibition-era style in the new gangster film ”Lawless” looks oddly… contemporary. So we’ve compiled a look back at movie characters who didn’t realize they were being hip before anyone else was. Read more…

“10 Years” Trailer Features Even More Channing Tatum

Channing Tatum must be some kind of time traveler, because he seems to put out more hot movies than the rest of Hollywood combined. This year alone he’s already headlined three of Hollywood’s biggest surprise hits, “The Vow,” “21 Jump Street” and “Magic Mike.” So he’s probably ready for a well earned vacation, right?

Nah, of course not. Instead, he’s got a brand new trailer for yet another movie coming out this fall, “10 Years.” Read more…

“Mockingjay” Split: Where Will It Be?

“The Hunger Games” film studio Lionsgate recently confirmed what we’ve been suspecting for a while now: that this franchise will duly follow in the footsteps of “Harry Potter” and “The Twilight Saga” and release its final chapter, “Mockingjay,” in two installments.

Yep, not surprisingly, a trilogy’s just not enough when we’re talking about cashing in on a phenomenon like this, so Suzanne Collins’ third and final “Hunger Games” book  will be split into two films, with Part 1 debuting on Nov. 21, 2014, and Part 2 following along on Nov. 20, 2015. Read more…
