Paula Deen Loses 5-Book Deal

Paula Deen Dropped By Target

Just when you thought there were no more blows left to be dealt to Paula Deen comes this pretty painful one: NBC News reports that company No. 11 is severing ties. Random House imprint Ballantine Books won’t go ahead with a planned printing of her new cookbook. Adding to the ouch: The cookbook in question is Paula Deen’s New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up—that’s right, the one that shot to No. 1 on Amazon thanks to an avalanche of pre-orders in the wake of her n-word scandal. It was set to come out in October as the first book in a five-book deal, and Deen’s agent says the whole deal is kaput. Read more on Newser…

Target And Novo Nordisk Drop Paula Deen

Paula Deen Dropped By Target

As Paula Deen was dropped by seemingly every company she’s ever been associated with, Novo Nordisk continued to say it would stand by her—but even that relationship appears to have frayed. The diabetes drug maker that partnered with Deen as she announced she had the disease today announced it is suspending the relationship “for now.” A rep tells Eater there is the “option” to resume the partnership in the future, “but it’s too early to say” whether that would happen. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Target also says it’s severing its relationship with Deen. It’ll “phase out” her cooking merchandise and won’t be ordering more, a rep tells TMZ. Read more on Newser…

Supreme Court Takes Ax To Voting Rights Act

Supreme Court Takes Ax To Voting Rights Act

he Supreme Court dealt what looks like a mortal wound to the Voting Rights Act today, striking down the law’s key enforcement metric. The court did not, as some had expected, strike down Section 5, which gives the federal government oversight over states and localities with a history of voter discrimination. Instead, in a 5-4 decision, the court’s conservative justices ruled that the formula used to determine which places require oversight is out of date, CNN explains. (The Washington Post has a quick primer on the law’s specifics.) Read more on Newser…

Need to Get Creative? Dim the Lights

If you’re working on a project that demands a burst of inspiration, try turning down the lights. The researchers put test subjects in rooms with dim, normal, and bright lighting and found that the first group performed best on problems that required outside-the-box thinking. 11 Child Stars Who Sought Emancipation

urns out Jaden Smith doesn’t really want to be emancipated from his parents—but these 10 child stars, rounded up by the Huffington Post, did:

  • Drew Barrymore petitioned for emancipation in 1991, when she was 15, in order to skirt child labor laws that were restricting the hours she could work.
