Woman Reads Library Book, Realizes Author Is Her Sister

Woman Reads Library Book, Realizes Author Is Her Sister

What many of us end up with after checking a book out of the library: a fine for returning it late. What one woman ended up with: a long-lost half sister. That woman isn’t named by NPR, who spoke to author Cheryl Strayed. Wild is a memoir of her 1995 1,100-mile West Coast hike with the now-extra appropriate subhead From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. As a bestseller and the first pick for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, it led to a flood of correspondence from fans—including an email she read this summer from a woman who “was just halfway into chapter one when she said she sat bolt upright in bed and realized that we had the same father,” Strayed tells NPR. Read more on Newser…

Soon to Be Made In China: Your Chicken Nuggets

The US Department of Agriculture quietly announced on Friday that it had approved four Chinese poultry plants to ship processed chicken into the US. It’s no wonder it tried to sneak that news onto the eve of a long weekend, notes Bloomberg: China has a dodgy reputation for food safety, with repeated outbreaks of avian flu and the New York Times reports that Chinese-made chicken jerky recently killed hundreds of US dogs. So it’s a little worrying that these processing plants will operate without USDA inspectors, and the agency does not require point-of-origin labeling, so American consumers will not know where their chicken comes from. Ariel Castro Kills Himself In Prison Cell

Ariel Castro To Spend Rest Of His Life In Prison

Ariel Castro has been found dead in his prison cell just 35 days into his life-plus-1,000-years sentence for keeping three women captive in his home for a decade. The 53-year-old hanged himself, say officials at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio. Prison officials found his body about 9:20pm. They tried emergency life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital. Officials say Castro was in protective custody, meaning he was in a cell by himself and was checked every 30 minutes, but he was not on suicide watch, the AP reports. Read more on Newser…

To Combat Big Cats, Aussies Deploy Bad Dogs

This just in: Australia’s been taken over by enormous cats. Well, sort of: The country’s Northern Territory is apparently overrun with feral cats that weigh up to 45 lbs; to smaller creatures, they’re basically killing machines, Vice reports, alongside a pretty stunning image. It’s posing a threat to the area’s biodiversity. “Even a small cat will eat several birds, reptiles, or mammals in a 24-hour period,” says a land official. “So you do the math on that, one cat might be eating 2,000 animals a year.” Read more at Newser…

Guys, You’re Just As Depressed As Women

Depression might be known more as a women’s disease, but new research shows men suffer just as much—only differently. When rage, risk-taking, and substance abuse are taken into account, men are just as likely to be diagnosed with depression as women, the study says. In fact, if nontraditional symptoms are properly identified, men may actually be more likely to suffer from major depression, the “Los Angeles Times” reports, adding it’s news that may help explain why men are four times more likely to commit suicide. Legendary Thief Caught By Retired Archnemesis

It’s a criminal tale that reads like “Catch Me If You Can.” At its center: a thief of antique silver alleged to have burgled 500 homes over 30 years (including that of Ivanka Trump) and the retired detective who spent his career trailing him. Blane Nordahl was arrested yesterday in a small town in north Florida, thanks in part to the dogged efforts of Lonnie Mason, a former NJ detective who twice captured Nordahl and who tipped Atlanta police off to the 51-year-old after noticing a pattern of Southern burglaries via Internet reports—as many as 70 this year, reports the Athens Banner-Herald. Among them: A 1734 silver mug once sipped by George II, slipped out of an Atlanta home via a removed windowpane; and silver spoons made by Paul Revere that disappeared from a NC plantation home whose alarm system was deactivated. Madonna Highest-Earning Celeb, Despite “Flop” Album

Somehow, despite selling fewer than a million copies of her latest album, Madonna made it to the top of the Forbes 2013 top-earning celebs list. She has her tour to thank: It grossed $305 million. Merchandise sales, her clothing line and fragrance, and investments also helped get her to the No. 1 spot; Forbes estimates she made $125 million between June 2012 and June 2013—more than she’s ever earned since Forbes started the Celebrity 100 list. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Issues Ban On Ex-Gay Therapy

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Issues Ban On Ex-Gay Therapy

Chris Christie may not have done much bill-signing on Friday, but the same can’t be said for today. The AP reports that the governor is set to sign a bill that will prevent licensed therapists from trying to turn gay teens straight. New Jersey will join California as the second state to outlaw “gay conversion therapy.” Christie has already signed a note that will accompany the bill; in it, he cites his own belief that people are born gay and that homosexuality is not a sin. Read more on Newser…
