New York, New Jersey Forced To Evacuate Again

The Nor’easter threatening the already-battered Atlantic Coast is weakening, but New York and New Jersey are still ordering evacuations ahead of the storm, which is already pelting Washington with ice and stirring seas as high as 7.5 feet off New York. In New York City, parks and beaches have been closed, construction halted, and 770 flights canceled; those in nursing homes and low-lying waterfront areas have been ordered to evacuate in New York and New Jersey. FEMA is ready to respond if necessary, Reuters reports. Read more…

2012 Election: How To Follow Ohio’s Result

All eyes are on the swing state of Ohio tonight, but when polls close at 7:30pm, there’s a good chance we won’t know anything for certain. For those following at home, here’s what we’ll know, when we’ll know it, and what factors could make all the difference in the Buckeye state, courtesy of the Washington Post:

  • As early as 7:45 p.m., election boards should give us the early absentee and in-person tallies. Obama will likely have a significant lead here, judging by polls of early voters; he’s in trouble if that’s not the case. Read more…

John Cusack Making Film About Rush Limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh is getting the Hollywood treatment, courtesy of John Cusack. The (liberal) actor’s production company plans to start work next year on a movie about Limbaugh, with Cusack playing the leading role himself, reports AP. Except for the fact that Betty Thomas is directing, no other details are known. Limbaugh, though, will be sure to love this AP comparison: “Cusack is a slender, dark-haired 46-year-old, while Limbaugh is 61, balding and portly.” Read more…

Woman Breaks Into Home, Cleans It

Talk about invasive marketing. A woman in Ohio allegedly broke into a home, tidied up a bit, then left a bill for $75 written on a napkin with her phone number, reports the Chronicle-Telegram of Elyria, Ohio. Police say Susan Warren took out the trash, vacuumed, dusted, and washed a few mugs, while the homeowner’s 19-year-old daughter slept upstairs. Read more…

New Yorkers Rail Against Marathon Plans

As New Yorkers pick up the pieces in Sandy’s wake, they’re tearing something else to pieces: the city’s plan to hold Sunday’s New York City Marathon as scheduled. Outrage has been growing since Mayor Bloomberg’s green-light announcement on Wednesday. Here’s why:

  • The starting point: As the Atlantic Wire explains, the race is slotted to kick off in Staten Island, which has been particularly hard-hit and is dealing with some pretty awful tragedies. “We are still taking people out of the water and we’re supposed to spruce up the parks for a race?” Rep. Michael Grimm told the Staten Island Advance. Read more…

Larry Flynt To Mourdock: $1 Million For Proof ‘God Intended’

Millionaires are sure throwing around their millions: Larry Flynt ran a full-page ad in today’s Indianapolis Star offering to put his money where Richard Mourdock’s mouth is. In exchange for any “verifiable transcript of your personal conversations with God,” including texts, letters, or emails, that say pregnancy from rape is something He “intended”, the Hustler publisher is offering $1 million. The tongue-in-cheek ad (less serious than his last plea to the GOP) also offers to deposit the cash in “any bank you designate in the United States, Cayman Islands, or Switzerland.” Read more…
