Dems Want Betty White To Counter Clint Eastwood

Democratic activists are trying to draft a convention speaker even older than surprise Republican speaker Clint Eastwood. A social media campaign has been launched to bring Betty White, the last surviving Golden Girl, to the Democratic National Convention this week, reports ABC. White, who endorsed Obama in May, turned 90 this year, and the president recorded a birthday message asking to see her long-form birth certificate. Read more…

Paul Ryan’s RNC Speech Flunks Fact Check

Who's Paul Ryan?
Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney Announces Rep. Paul Ryan As His Vice Presidential Pick
12 things to know about Mitt Romney's new running mate. Read More »

Paul Ryan’s speech last night may have been rousing, but accurate it was not. Ryan is being lambasted today for what Sally Kohn of Fox News calls “an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech.” Here’s what the critics are saying:

  • Ryan said Obama broke a promise by not saving a GM plant in Janesville, Wis. But PolitiFact could find no evidence that Obama explicitly made such a promise and, more importantly, the plant closed before Obama was even sworn in.
  • Ryan chastised Obama for creating a bipartisan debt commission and doing nothing with its findings. But as Talking Points Memo points out, Ryan was on that commission—and voted against it, as did the panel’s other Republicans. Read more…

Heidi Klum And Seal’s Divorce Gets Ugly

Heidi Klum’s divorce from Seal seemed so very drama-free … at first. Now things are getting ugly, according to a report in Star magazine. First, Seal contested Heidi twice—first he fought her request for primary physical custody of their kids (he wants equal time), then he said she was wrong when she claimed no joint assets needed to be divided. (There’s quite a bit of difference in their fortunes—Seal is worth just $15 million to Heidi’s $70 million.) But now Heidi’s the one who’s angry, Radar reports. Read more …

How Maude Apatow Became A Twitter Celebrity By 14

Maude Apatow is just 14 years old, and though she’s appeared in some of her dad Judd’s movies, she’s not exactly a child star. She’s more focused on starting high school than starting a career—”It’ll be OK,” she predicts in a New York Times profile. “Hopefully.” But Maude’s observations on life as an adolescent speak to many, from normal kids her age to celebrities much older—she counts Girls‘ Lena Dunham and iconic author Judy Blume among her fans—and her astute, often hilarious tweets have scored her 67,000 Twitter followers. (And no, her dad doesn’t write her tweets, although he sometimes edits her grammar and the two often spar over Twitter. “It could not be more unhealthy,” says Apatow.) Read more…

It’s too painful for them to be together, so Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have bailed on four remaining official Twilight conventions. The massive fan confabs are a major way for the stars to promote theirTwilight films. Fans were hoping at least one of the two would turn up at the conventions, to be held in the next couple of months in San Antonio, Detroit, Parsippany, NJ, and Los Angeles, but they’ve both ditched, along with co-star Taylor Lautner, reports Zap2it. It’s likely the stars will dodge other promotional events plugging Breaking Dawn Part II, the last film in the popular series. Read more…

Molly Oswaks is one of two female writers at the tech blog Gizmodo, and you’ll get a pretty good sense of how that goes over among male commenters with her post headlined, “Your Nasty, Nerdy Sexism Isn’t Cute.” Based on the feedback she’s gotten, Oswaks is compelled to break the news that technology is not just for guys. She also has to dispel the notion that she must have gotten her job because Gizmodo has a gender quota or … worse. Read more …
