‘Double Jeopardy’ Could Block Amanda Knox Extradition

Amanda Knox won’t be going back to Italy for her new murder trial, but if she is found guilty in absentia and appeals fail, she could be facing a mammoth legal battle at home in the US. If Italy seeks her extradition, American courts will have to decide whether the constitutional ban on “double jeopardy”—being tried twice for the same crime—trumps the extradition treaty the US has with Italy, Reuters reports. The new trial is expected to begin late this year or early in 2014, Knox’s Italian lawyer says. Read more…

Isla Fisher On What It’s Like To Be Married To Sacha Baron Cohen

As you probably suspected, a marriage to Sacha Baron Cohen is not the same as your typical, run-of-the-mill union. “It’s definitely not a normal relationship,” his wife, actress Isla Fisher, tells California Style magazine in an interview picked up by Australia’s News Network. “There have been times in the past with the guerrilla style filmmaking of Borat and Bruno where there were surreal conversations: ‘How many people are suing us? Are you wanted in any states? Are you alive?’” Read more…

Woman Loses Teeth Due To Very Strong Tea

Tea: It’s good for you, but only if you don’t drink too much of it. And by “too much of it,” we mean a pitcher made with 100 to 150 tea bags. That’s how much a Detroit woman drank each day, and doctors eventually realized that her years of back, arm, leg, and hip pains were caused by the tea habit, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Voice Of Elmo Sued Over Meth-Fueled Sex Parties

The original ‘voice of Elmo’ accuser, Sheldon Stephens, has now officially sued Kevin Clash, alleging the former Sesame Street puppeteer lured him into a sexual relationship when he was underage. Stephens, who originally recanted his claims of sex abuse only to recant his recant amid reports that Clash had paid him off, says Clash had Stephens chauffeured to his New York apartment for sex starting when Stephens was 16. While there, Stephens says, Clash smoked crystal meth and the chauffeur masturbated while he watched the pair have sex. Read more …

Teen Testifies That He Recorded Some Of The Steubenville Rape

A teenager testified in the Steubenville rape trial today that he’d personally witnessed defendant Trent Mays put his fingers inside the victim’s vagina as they drove from one party to another, and even recorded it on his cellphone—though he says he deleted the video the next morning, realizing he’d done “something stupid and wrong.” The 17-year-old testified only after the judge gave him immunity from prosecution, the AP reports. Witness accounts are crucial to the trial, because the victim doesn’t appear to remember what happened.  Read more…

Kris Humphries Had To Re-Shoot Marriage Proposal

11 Life Lessons From This Year In Reality Television

Shocker: Some of the stuff you saw on Kim Kardashian’s reality show may not have actually been true to life. Case in point: Court documents obtained by Life & Style reveal that when Kris Humphries proposed to Kim, she made him do it all over again so they could re-shoot the scene; seems she didn’t like her reaction in the first “take.” The documents also include an admission from a producer that other “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” scenes, including at least two that depicted Humphries in a bad light, were either scripted, re-shot, or edited. Oh, and Kim uses a “tear stick” to get herself to cry. Read more…

Twinkies Should Return To Shelves By Summer

Looks like Twinkies have a new owner—and if all goes according to plan, the classic snack could be back in stores within months. Hostess has canceled today’s auction for its brands and facilities and will sell them to Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co., investment firms that bid $410 million. As of Monday’s bidding deadline, it was the only qualified offer, the New York Times reports. Now the companies, which the Times describes as having “a shared history of corporate turnarounds,” await court approval; a hearing is due March 19. As for what this turnaround could look like, the would-be owners gave a few hints: Twinkies in more stories, 100-calorie options, and Zach Galifianakis as potential spokesman. Read more …

After James Holmes’ attorneys said he was not ready to enter a plea this morning, the judge did it for him—not guilty on 166 counts, including the murder of 12 people in an Aurora movie theater last July and attempting to kill 70 others, reports the Denver Post. The move lets Holmes keep the option of changing the plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. Read more…

Why Bill Clinton Wants To Put An End To DOMA

The Supreme Court is preparing to take up the Defense of Marriage Act—and the very president who signed it is urging justices to strike it down. DOMA came at “a very different time” in US history, writes Bill Clinton in a Washington Post editorial. No state recognized same-sex marriage, and just 81 of 535 members of Congress opposed the measure’s passage. Some senators, Clinton notes, saw the law as a way of preventing a more extreme constitutional amendment against gay marriage.

The Supreme Court will examine whether DOMA supports “freedom, equality, and justice above all.” Since signing the measure in 1996, “I have come to believe that DOMA is contrary to those principles and, in fact, incompatible with our Constitution,” Clinton writes. Read more…
