In impoverished Yemen, the forced marriage of young girls is not an uncommon practice. According to the UK’s Daily Mail, men will pay poor families a “bride price” for their young daughters, so marrying off girls as young as Nada al-Ahdal, 11, happens often. There is also a traditional belief that if girls are married when they are young, they will live away from temptation and will grow up to be obedient wives. Keep reading »
David Cameron, British Prime Minister, has announced that every household will now be blocked from viewing online porn and other adult materials unless they specify that they would like the block to be removed. He has also announced that it is now a criminal offense to possess porn that depicts rape or simulated rape, reports the Daily Mail.
These laws are an attempt to clean up the internet and block children from accessing violent porn on the internet without their parents’ knowledge. The laws also hope to at least decrease the amount of rape-depicting porn available to people. By the end of the year, all new customers setting up an Internet account will have to select whether or not they would like adult content to be available. Having the block on adult material will be the default setting. David Cameron said, “We are taking action to help clean up the internet and protect a generation of children from often extreme online pornography.” Keep reading »

It is easy to think of sex trafficking as something that only happens far off in Asia or in the movie Taken. But human trafficking happens in America as well. This week, in Lakewood, New Jersey, Jose Cruz “Chato” Romero-Flores, along with his girlfriend and four male associates, were arrested in a human trafficking bust, reports USA Today.
Romero-Flores allegedly ran three brothels in Lakewood and filled them with women lured from their homes in Latin America with promises of jobs as house cleaners or babysitters. In these brothels, women were forced to serve up to 40 clients in a single day.

Speaking from experience, long-distance relationships can be the worst. Missing your significant other leads to frustration, which leads to anger, which leads to fights that can’t end in sex and snuggling. For some reason, people keep trying them and sometimes they even work out in the end. In fact, a study conducted by Crystal Jiang, from the City University of Hong Kong, and Jeffrey Hancock, from Cornell University, has found that people in LDRs are more likely to form strong bonds than couples who see each other in person regularly.
In the study, as reported in Science Daily, dating couples in both long distance and geographically close relationships were asked to report their daily interactions over the course of a week. This included face-to-face talking, texting, phone calls, emails, video chat, and social media. The couples were also asked to report how much they shared about themselves and how intimate they felt with their partner during these interactions.

Kris Jenner may be the most over-involved parent of all time, but I have yet to witness an incident where she has been this oblivious. For some reason, Kris Jenner can’t figure out why Kim Kardashian and Kanye West aren’t married yet. Kris Jenner appeared on “The Talk” yesterday and, naturally, was asked about Kim, her new baby, North West, and Kim’s relationship with Kanye West. Co-host Sara Gilbert asked Jenner, “Are Kim and Kanye going to get married and are you upset about it?” Jenner replied, “No and no.” Despite this answer, she went on to discuss her frustration that neither Kourtney, who has two children with boyfriend Scott Disick, nor Kim is married even though they have children. When Jackie Johnson-Smith’s child began to cry during dinner at Fong’s Pizza in Iowa, as you might expect, she fed the child and then exited the restaurant to avoid disturbing other diners. Johnson-Smith happens to breastfeed her baby, a practice that is often met with a lot of opposition in public. This time, however, she was thanked by her waitress in the form of a free pizza. This summer, I, like many of my college-attending peers, split my weeks between an internship here at The Frisky and a part-time job. I happen to be waiting tables at a German restaurant near my home. Waitressing has provided me with an excess of strange knowledge and bizarre tales. Once I don my black button-down shirt and black dress pants pulled out of storage from my sister’s days in the high school orchestra, my status as a human seems to change. Observing people is therefore my favorite part of the job by far.
Anyway, here I have compiled some of the more interesting experiences from my days as a waitress, categorized into The Good, The Bad, and The Strange.
