A lot of parents play the guilt card if you don’t visit enough. You never write! You never call, either! But China will actually fine you or throw you in jail for not stopping by to visit Mom and Dad. The country is having some pretty big problems with its population: as the number of people over 60 years old exceeds 194 million, the government is looking for new ways to ensure that children care for their aging parents. In an attempt to solve this problem, a new phrasing of an existing law came into effect this week that threatens fines or jail time for grown children who do not visit their elderly parents enough. What exactly does “enough” mean? The law isn’t clear. And how does the Chinese government plan to catch people who aren’t visiting enough? Are parents supposed to rat out their kids? Clearly this law is a direct result of China’s “one child policy” which has been in effect for the past 30 years. There are far too many elderly people for the young and able to support. Even in individual families, it is a huge burden on a single child to take care of both of his or her parents. The Chinese government mostly hopes that this law will serve to encourage children to visit their elderly parents, but there’s a good chance it’ll just vastly increase the number of lawbreakers in China. We’re Madly Jealous Of Feminist Summer Camp For High School Girls

feminist summer camp

Summer camp is the quintessential summer experience for many, but at this Manhattan-based camp, there isn’t a campfire or s’more in sight. This is Feminist Camp.

Created by Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner, the co-authors of Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future, Feminist Camp aims to teach girls what being a feminist really means. Young women can expect to “hone their leadership skills, meet inspiring activists, and tackle the real issues that impact their lives.” Sounds rad! Keep reading »

sexist sausages

Leave it to Germany to make every kind of sausage imaginable. These Rastings sausages are designed and marketed specifically towards men or women, bearing a hyper-sexualized image of the opposite sex. The sausages for women are labeled “lean,” while the brats for men are labeled “hearty” and “strong-spiced.” Obviously this is because women are solely concerned with their appearances while men are helplessly self-indulgent with no concern for their health. Gender-specific tubed pork products! What a brilliant idea. Obviously, I would go for the “hearty” sausages for dudes. [Huffington Post]

Fallon Fox received a lot of attention and abuse in March after she was forced to come out as a transgender woman. Fallon had been a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter for six years, but as soon as she came out, she was faced with a barrage of transphobic comments, and many people accused her of having an unfair advantage because she was once physically a man. Some argued that she had more testosterone in her body than a cisgender (people who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth) woman. Others claimed that she would have larger or denser bones than a cisgender woman.

These assumptions and accusations do not just apply to Fallon Fox: lots of trans athletes are discriminated against because there’s an assumption that e a trans woman must have some physical advantage over cisgender women — but science says otherwise. In fact, an article on Outsports debunks a couple of these myths.

You know the fashion industry is in a bad place when a model doesn’t mind being cut from a runway show for the size of her boobs because she’s usually dropped from shows for her race. Yesterday, Jourdan Dunn tweeted that she had been cut from the Christian Dior Couture show in Paris that took place today. She was obviously annoyed, but laughed it off, understanding that the expectations of the modeling industry are ridiculous. Her next tweet, however, explained why she was so easygoing about the unfairness with which she was treated. She said,

“I’m normally told I’m cancelled because I’m ‘coloured’ so being cancelled because off my  boobs is minor.” Keep reading »

woman at bar

I’m almost positive I’ve seen at least one episode of “CSI: Miami” that goes exactly as follows: A few women team up to seduce some unsuspecting men in sleazy clubs. The men are incapacitated in some way and then robbed. Oddly enough, this is actually happening in real life.

That is, of course, if you consider what goes on in southern Florida to be real life. Keep reading »
