madelyn schaeffer

Last week, Madelyn Sheaffer went to Adventure Oasis Water Park in Independence, Missouri with her teenage daughter. Sheaffer, who recently lost 100 pounds, was proud to be wearing a bikini for the outing. The park officials, however, did not feel the same way.

While she was cooling off in the pool, two teenage employees approached her and asked her to put on some shorts or she would be asked to leave the park. She refused and continued to enjoy the day with her family. Sheaffer was then approached by a supervisor at the park who told her she had to put on both shorts and a shirt or leave because he found her attire too offensive for a family-friendly park. Sheaffer looked around the park only to see that there were plenty of other women wearing similar bikinis, yet she was the only one that was asked to cover up. Therefore, she again refused to leave. The supervisor called the police to escort Sheaffer out of the park. According to a post on Sheaffer’s Facebook page, even the police officers found the situation to be questionable. She wrote:

“We can’t actually say anything,” they said as we walked outside (as it is a city owned park) “… but I hope from the expressions on our face you can tell how we feel.” They were compassionate. They too, thought it was ridiculous.

Carly's Cafe

Carly Fleischmann has co-authored a book with her father, starred in a film, has 97,000 followers on Facebook, and will attend the University of Toronto in the fall.

She also has autism and is nonverbal. But what she can do is use technology to communicate; she’s been communicating using computers since she was 10 years old.  “Carly was diagnosed at age two with severe autism and cognitive delay and oral motor apraxia, which is a neurological disorder preventing speech,” her father explained in an interview with Simon & Schuster. “We can’t speak to her because we don’t know what she understands, and she can’t speak to us because she’s unable to speak. … Technology has really been the key to unlocking Carly’s voice.” Keep reading »

Kate Stoltzfus in Maxim

I don’t know what it is about TLC’s “Breaking Amish” that fascinates me so much, but I am hooked. So obviously when I found out that one of the stars, Kate Stoltzfus, posed for Maxim, I was irrationally excited. She looks smoking hot, but apparently this is nothing unusual for Amish women. She told Maxim:

“There are definitely a lot of Amish women who have great bodies, because they work hard. They also eat really healthy, since they grow their own food. That’s one big thing I miss about home, being able to garden and take care of plants.”

On the show, she has talked about feeling like “a small fish in a really big pond” as she transitions from Amish life to the life of an aspiring model in New York City. But I have a feeling that this stunner shoot in Maxim may start to change those feelings for her. [Huffington Post]

Last week, Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, announced that he will be sending a junior minister to the British Open, a prestigious golf tournament,  instead of attending it himself. He’s an avid golfer and is not forgoing the event out of disinterest. Rather on a matter of principle: the club hosting the event does not admit women as members. In about a month, the tournament will be held at Muirfield, a privately-owend club that is run by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which only allows male members. Salmond feels the male-only membership rule of the club sends the message that women are “second-class citizens” and that Muirfield should have been made to change its membership rules before it was considered for the honor of hosting the tournament. Alas, discrimination against women in golf is nothing new. The Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, just admitted its first female members last year after a long, long time of feminists protesting this injustice. For some reason, golf clubs have gotten away with not admitting women for an unreasonable amount of time. What’s up with that?!  [Telegraph UK] [Photo of a woman golfing via Shutterstock]

With all the fuss over DOMA and, oh, treating gay people like equals, bigots are starting to feel really neglected. Don’t worry, folks, because the Family Research Council —famous for its anti-gay agenda — is hosting a dinner in Washington, D.C. for “former homosexuals” to celebrate their return to the straight and narrow. The dinner would be in honor of something called “Ex-Gay Pride Month,” which is proposed to start July 31st. Keep reading »

It Took Almost 30 Years To Find Missing Woman’s Body In Husband’s Hoarder Home

body of missing wife found in hoarder's home

If you’ve seen the show “Hoarders” then you can easily understand why anything, even a human body, could stay hidden for a very, very long time in the home of a hoarder. So, you know where this story is headed: James Nichols reported his wife, Jo Ann Nichols of Poughkeepsie, New York, missing in December of 1985 after she did not show up for a beauty parlor appointment. He told police that he received a typed note from his wife and then talked to her on the phone three days after he reported her as missing. Nichols also told police that he found his wife’s car parked at a local shopping mall. After searching his house, police determined that Mr. Nichols had not had anything to do with his wife’s disappearance.

Oh, did I mention the amount of stuff they had to wade through in that home?  According to neighbors, Mr. Nichols was an intense hoarder. He even had several dumpsters in his backyard for extra storage. The police also probably thought it was safe to assume that this was not an episode of “CSI”and didn’t check (or even know about) his false wall in the basement where he was hiding his wife’s body.
