Will the idea of private sales for automobiles actually take off? We were pretty stunned when Gilt announced they were offering three VW Jettas for the insanely awesome price of $5,995. Sure, kinda crazy to buy a car off the internet … on a whim … from a clothing website, but we sort of dig the idea. Now it turns out Gilt is offering up Vespas. Racked reports that there are two models which price at $5,520 (down from $7,236) and $3,740 (down from $4,736). Can you feel the wind in your hair already? [Racked] Keep reading »
Today’s big fashion news: Carine Roitfeld, super skinny French woman and editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, has just announced that she will be leaving her post after January. In the 10 years she’s held the position, Roitfeld has become a style icon in her own right, so, understandably, some are a bit shocked to see her stepping away from such a powerful position. Her reason for leaving? She says she wants to focus on personal projects and says that “it’s time to do something different.” We totally get that feeling. In an economy where people should be “thanking their lucky stars” if they have a job, we often forget about our own personal growth and desires. Obviously, Carine is in a professional and financial position that allows her the luxury to just walk away from a job, but the mentality is something to remember—everyone needs change in their lives and it’s OK to walk away from a good thing from time to time. What’s worse? When sneakers look like high heels, or when high heels look like sneakers? We can’t answer that, but we can say that the sneaker pump is rarely a good thing. Exhibit A: These Nike stilettos. Keep reading »
We’re beginning to wonder if the size debate surrounding model Crystal Renn will ever die down. She’s been hailed a plus-size icon but keeps stunning audiences with her fluctuating weight. For her latest work, she modeled for Zac Posen‘s pre-fall 2011 lookbook and can hardly be called plus-sized by these photos. We become more and more confused as to whether we should be praising Renn, or critical when she loses weight. (In the end, we don’t mean to make judgments, bash, or use her as a global example; it’s just that it’s hard to not talk about it.) In these pics, she’s not stick-thin, and it feels almost stupid that we can praise just that. But … she does look very svelte, especially in a pose where she wraps her hands around her entire waist … can anyone do that besides incredibly thin people? [Vogue UK] Keep reading »
Thanks, New York Times, for outing one of my top fashion secrets—”comfort” shoe brands like Aerosoles and Naturalizer. (OK, to be fair, if this is a NYT story, then it’s not like they were a secret to begin with.) These companies have, in the past, had the rep for being the shoes your mom and grandmother wore: austere suede and leather things with obvious added comfort soles. Basically, at one point, they were what you might think of as fancied-up orthopedic shoes. But slowly, these brands have been changing their tune, and adding hipper styles to the mix. Now you might walk into one of these stores to find super comfy versions of trends like motorcycle boots, lace-up wedges, and the like.

Looks like Elle Fanning is following in her sister’s footsteps … if that means growing up super fast. The “Somewhere” star graces the pages of this month’s Lula magazine, looking very high fashion and mature. [Coco Perez] Keep reading »
I have a question to pose to the class. Last week, I got a horrible haircut. Now, to say it is The World’s Worst Haircut would be stretching it, but it’s still pretty crappy. How can I describe it for you … think: Donny Osmond meets David Cassidy meets JTT circa 1996. First of all, one should never find oneself in this type of situation because we should all be confident and brave enough to stand up to our hairdressers when they start doing something weird, right? Well, call me a wimp, but I stayed silent as some dude flicked his scissors around my ‘do, which became increasingly mullet-like before my own eyes.

In the market for a new car? You should’ve checked out Gilt today at noon. The private sale company sold a special Volkswagen Jetta (completely new!) for the slightly insane price of $5,995. Normally, these cars retail for $15,995. Missed it? Don’t feel too bad. You’ll get a chance tomorrow and Friday at noon, for two more of the limited-edition cars. Sure, your chances of getting one are kinda slim, but still. Oh, and you can only access the sale through mobile devices like the iPhone app, iPad, etc.

When it comes to the world of Vogue, there are two Annas. Wintour, of course, and the one you probably don’t know too much about is Anna Dello Russo. She is the editor of Japanese Vogue, and she is awesome. In this profile in the Guardian, we learn that the fashion pro is quirky, full of spunk, and the total antithesis of Ms. Wintour. For starters, she wears watermelon hats (we heart you), publishes articles like “10 ways to make sure your fancydress costume won’t disappoint French Vogue editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld,” and has her own perfume coming out called J’ADR. She could be onto something with this editors launching fragrances business. Can we get some of this fun fashion action stateside? [Guardian] Keep reading »
