Spirit Hoods Help You Look Like The Bear You Think You Are

Oh, look! Over there! At the end of the bar! It’s … a panda bear? Oh, wait, no, no, it’s actually just a guy wearing panda bear ears and paws. Ugh. Part of a new trend of “spirit animal” fashion, we’re seeing more and more people out and about with spirit hoods. Theoretically, yes, it’s adorable — we love our spirit animals (mini-ponies and Dorothy Zbornak) as much as anybody. But these hoods are a total sartorial boner killer and take us in the wayback machine to the candy-raving ’90s. What do you think? Would you wear a “spirit hood”? [The Vie Society] Keep reading »

Good On Paper, “Meh” In Real Life?

We’ve all met somebody who fits the description: really, really great on paper, but not able to translate that into much of anything in person. I thought about it recently because I heard from a guy I used to date — one who is sooooo perfect on paper. He’s an attractive lawyer who owns his own house, rides motorcycles, and has a dog, but something in person just didn’t make sense for us. He was perfectly lovely, kind, considerate and thoughtful. He was also driven, ambitious, and had an adventurous spirit. But the cliche spark we were supposed to feel for each other was nonexistent. He remains a friend — and a constant reminder that chemistry can’t be quantified or tallied in abstract characteristics. And no matter how much you might want someone to be the right person for you — because they do have all of the things on your checklist — the universe has a way of telling you what you actually need. Tell us: Have you ever dated someone who met all your “on paper” qualifications but still wasn’t right for you? Keep reading »

Old-School Wednesdays: Sonic Youth Give “100 Percent”

Before directing “Where the Wild Things Are,” Spike Jonze was just a skater punk who hung out with the effortlessly cool noise band Sonic Youth. This video for SY’s “100 Percent” was Jonze’s directorial debut, and features him and a baby Jason Lee skating and house partying with the band. The song is about the band’s friend, Joe Cole, who was shot and killed in front of his house in 1991. [YouTube] Keep reading »
