Sex Or Self-Esteem?

Look, college kids don’t want your sex or your junk food — they just want some love. A new paper from researchers at Ohio State University found that college students prefer an ego boost to sex. Sex? Really? When given the choice between a self-esteem boosting activity (like getting a compliment) or “receiving a paycheck, seeing a best friend and drinking alcohol, in addition to eating a favorite food, [and] engaging in a favorite sexual activity,” most chose self-esteem. Part of why self-esteem may be so desired: drugs, alcohol and sex are readily available on college campuses, but self-esteem is one of those intangibles that is a bit harder for kids to grasp.

It’s interesting research, especially given how today’s college generation is touted as being more self-absorbed than previous generations. What do you think? Would you pick a compliment over sex? [NY Times] Keep reading »

The 8 Most Embarrassing Celeb Children

tomhanks 011211 m jpg
As much as celebrities try to control their public personas, sometimes the things their children do are completely out of control. Don’t believe us? Tom Hanks’ son Chet really enjoys his Rap Snacks–he’s developed quite a little rap career as a student at Northwestern University. Chet, who goes by Chet Haze, writes raps about getting ladies and smoking blunts. His lyrics? “I got a call from the brothers in the frat house/ I’m with my girl, tryin to get up under that blouse/ She a freshman/ She a freak though/ In the bed, but a lady in the street, yo.” He’s a real life “Malibu’s Most Wanted!” Check out the following children of famous parents — and some of their most mortifying/embarrassing life choices.

On last night’s “Colbert Report,” Stephen invited Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys and Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend on to figure out who should win this year’s Grammy for best alternative album. To settle the score, Colbert challenged the two bands to a “sell-out-off.” While the Keys have a Victoria’s Secret and Zales commercial under their belt, Vampire Weekend boasts commercials for Honda and Tommy Hilfiger. As Colbert notes, “Clearly, you have both equally whored out your music.” So true! [Comedy Central] Keep reading »

Cross-Species Love: Animal Orgy Version

“American Idol” Taylor Hicks’ Cruise Caught In Drug Scandal

Sometimes scandal comes from the most unlikely of places. Like, say, a jam cruise featuring little-remembered “American Idol” Taylor Hicks? Hicks was set to perform, along with The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and Maceo Parker, on the six-day “Bonnaroo at Sea” to the Caribbean. But then federal agents raided the ship before it even set sail and seized marijuana, LSD, mushrooms, hash oil, Ecstasy, and prescription drugs, along with drug paraphernalia. After the raid, the ship was allowed to leave port and it’s unclear whether any charges were pressed against any of the performing musicians. Who knew that the gray-haired Joe Cocker sound-a-like would be the biggest partier of ‘em all? [Spinner] Keep reading »

Girl Talk: Facebook Ruined My First Love

Facebook is really great for reconnecting with old friends and finding out what your buddies are up to. What it is also great for: shattering every illusion you ever had about your first love–just like it did for me this weekend.

I first spotted Jeremy when I was a sixth grade student at a public magnet school in Fort Worth, Texas. He looked exactly like Jay Underwood, the guy who played Tia’s loser boyfriend Bug in “Uncle Buck,” which is to say that he was incredibly hot. I never spoke to him — NEVER — but I rode the hour each way to school with him every day. And, it turned out, his mom was my English teacher. She was firm, but friendly — and she was my only link to the strange but beautiful creature that was her son. Sometimes I would stick around after class to see if he would stop by.

I never spoke to Jeremy, until the very last day I lived in Texas. My dad is a nuclear engineer, and growing up we moved a round a lot — from nuclear power plant to nuclear power plant. I used to joke that we were the modern-day Joads (a joke that only works if you are a Grapes of Wrath fan). We were moving from Ft. Worth to New Jersey, and I finally worked up the courage to tell Jeremy how I felt. I wrote him a letter telling him how interesting and unique I thought he was. I told him I was moving but that I’d like to write letters to him, if he wanted. I slipped the notebook paper to him as I was getting off the bus on my final interminable ride home. Keep reading »

On last night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart spoke eloquently about the devastating shooting that occurred in Arizona over the weekend, and the current dangerous political climate. Said Stewart, “We shouldn’t conflate our political opponents with enemies, if for no other reason than to draw a better distinction between the manifestos of paranoid madmen and what passes for political and pundit speak. it would be really nice if the ramblings of crazy people didn’t in any way resemble how we actually talk to each other on TV.” Please watch. You’ve Probably Never Heard Of H&M’s Next Big Collaborator

Swedish fashion giant H&M has done some pretty high profile collaborations in the past–Lanvin, Victor & Rolf and Stella McCartney, to name just a few. But you probably haven’t heard of their newest collaborator. Fashion blogger Elin Kling is “big in Sweden” but really hasn’t made a name for herself here. Still, she’s been plucked from the land of attractive blondes and high literacy rates to design the brand’s latest collaboration. Kling’s blog, Style By Kling, features tons of photos of Kling looking svelte and stylish. Most of the blog is in Swedish, so we can’t really tell you what, if anything, it’s about. Kling is known as one of Sweden’s leading fashion ladies. Sadly, we Americanos won’t be able to get our grubby mitts on her collection: It’s only available in Sweden. But perhaps some pieces will pop up on eBay? [Fashionista] Keep reading »
