Meet Jacky. She’s the newest American Apparel model, and someone who is solidly outside of its 15 to 30 demographic. We’re not sure how old Jacky is, but it’s safe to say she’s probably old enough to be a lot of other AA models’ mom. Which is why it’s cool that AA tapped her to star in its new series of “Advanced Basics” ads.
Of course, this being AA, they couldn’t simply allow for a classy ad featuring Jacky striking a pose; one of the photos features Jacky in those stupid dual color tights, spread eagle on the floor, showing the world her crotch. So yeah, they’re equal opportunity pervs. [Fashionista]
Cats have an inability to discern mirror images from real things. Which is what makes this video of a little grey kitten scared of his own reflection so cute. It also proves that cats are likely too stupid to run for president, ever. Senator, maybe, but not president. [YouTube]
Whoo! Guys, it’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week! Designer Raf Simons debuted his first collection with Christian Dior this week, to a mind-blowing array of celebrities and designers. The show was set in a series of rooms covered in wall-to-wall blue orchids, white mimosas and roses, which gave the impression of being inside a Rose Bowl float. Anna Wintour loved it though, as did some of the other vaunted guests, including Marc Jacobs, Marion Cotillard, and Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz. Critical reactions to the collection have been for the most part positive — but what do you think? Do Raf’s looks live up to Dior’s reputation? Or does the show fall flat?
Well, this sounds rather strange: Promoters in Israel organized a “Miss Holocaust Survivor” pageant. Three hundred women from across the country signed up to compete, and 14 finalists were chosen. Pageant organizer Shimon Sabag said the pageant’s popularity was a sign that it was in good taste, but Colette Avital, chair of one of Israel’s leading Holocaust survivors’ groups, said, “It sounds totally macabre to me. I’m in favor of enriching lives, but a one-time pageant masquerading [survivors] … is not what is going to make their lives more meaningful.” Keep reading »
It’s not enough that model Anja Rubik is incredibly beautiful — she also seems to be really, effortlessly cool. And motivated! Rubik is about to launch the first issue of her new erotica-tinged mag, 25. The magazine will feature spreads with some of Anja’s best model friends, and interviews with some of her famous female friends. Rubik says she was wholly invested in making an erotica magazine that would represent the female gaze, so she enlisted a roster of female photographers for all the shoots. “It was bothering me how the world is nowadays – how we approach nudity and sexuality and beauty,” said Rubik of the venture. “Nowadays, sex and nudity is either so vulgar or so prude. So I wanted to create something inspiring, and beautiful, and sensual, to get people to think in a different way.“ [NYMag.com]
