What you read says a lot about you — and to the dude you’re trying to date. We asked a bunch of our guy friends about what they love and loathe seeing on your bookshelves, and they had a lot to say. We’re not advocating that you alter your reading habits to make some guy happy (no friggin’ way), but this is what dudes might be thinking about you when they see what’s on your book shelf…
“She’s funny … and let’s face it, most pretty girls aren’t funny.”
–Joseph Gordon-Levitt, about his “Looper” co-star Emily Blunt. Blunt allegedly “bristled” at the comment, but JGL was apparently unmoved. You know what’s “not funny” JGL? Making blanket statements correlating one’s perceived attractiveness with their sense of humor. We’re so over. [Digital Spy]
This pic looks like some straight up “X-Files” outtake, but it’s not. It’s actually a photograph of Poland’s western forests, where a swath of trees has grown with hook-shaped trunks. No one is sure what caused the 90-year-0ld trees to grow in such a way — though it appears that it was some kind of human mechanical intervention. Either way, it looks really cool. [Discovery]
There’s only one Patti Smith, but that doesn’t mean people won’t forever be copping her signature look and style. For the latest issue of Helmet magazine, model Anna Albrekht does her best Patti impression, for a series of photos that seem modeled after the ones found in Judy Linn’s recent collection of Smith photographs. Linn and Smith are close friends, and Linn’s taken Patti’s portrait hundreds of times over the course of their friendship. Albrekht does an admirable job of aping Patti’s unique style and vibe. Online dating is totally cool now — but would you use the Internet to find new friends? A slew of new sites–like SocialJane and GirlFriendCircles–have launched to help women make platonic connections with other women.
Why do women use these sites? Sometimes it’s that they’ve moved to a new city and are craving new friends. Other times, it’s that they’re simply hoping to widen their friendship circle. Writer Rachel Bertsche told The New York Times that she used the site GirlFriendCircles after relocating to Chicago to be with her husband. Bertsche says she definitely felt a stigma searching for new friends online. “This is horribly embarrassing. You say, ‘I’m looking for new friends,’ and people hear, ‘I have no friends.’ ” Keep reading »
How much do I love Stevie Nicks? This is a woman who literally shot cocaine up her butt and also sings like an angel. We loved her as part of Fleetwood Mac and we loved her solo. And we especially loved it when she was on “Oprah” not too long ago. Oprah, plagued by all the debaucherous things Stevie had done in the past, couldn’t even deal with asking her anything real, so she was all, “STEVIE! How do you KEEP! Your SKIN! Looking so FRESH!” In Oprah voice, you know.
We are so stoked that Fleetwood Mac is getting the band back together, especially since we were like, five years old the last time they released an album. Plus, Stevie has to die for style, though we’d hardly recommend you copy her look line for line. Come on, do you really want to look like a consumptive rat catcher lady dressed by a flock of whitedoves?
Instead, we suggest you update your Stevie-worshiping look with one of these fine frocks. Continue reading
