Are My Husband And I Becoming The Same Person?

This was a few years back, but I’ll never forget the comment made by a new girlfriend of a friend upon meeting my husband and me for the first time: “Wow. You two look like brother and sister.” Um, thanks? I laughed off her remark, but, subconsciously, it did creep me out that we might look alike. I remembered having read about a popular study done in the ’80s, which claimed that couples start looking more and more alike over the years of cohabiting, because of their influence on each other. So maybe that’s what was happening to us, I thought. But still, egads! Would we end up being that middle-aged couple — the one with the same short haircut, furry chin, and potbelly, wearing matching jumpsuits to the grocery store? Were we on our way to becoming … the same person? Keep reading »

US Open Tennis Players Get Goddess-Like For The NY Times

One great thing about the end of summer is that it’s US Open time! Fans are getting stoked for the tennis tournament that starts today, particularly here in New York City, where the games are just a train ride away. As part of a larger feature on women’s tennis, and to get everyone revved up, The New York Times Magazine put together a video slideshow, “The Beauty of the Power Game,” which turned out to be quite a sexy representation of the tourney’s hardest-hitting female players, including Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams … Keep reading »

For One-Night Stands: Men Are Into A Hot Bod, Not A Pretty Face

Attraction is complicated – it’s about his personality, how he smiles, how he moves, and so much more. But in that first initial encounter it’s all about the face, right? Well, this may come as the no-duh news of the week, but for dudes it depends. A recent psychology study out of the University of Texas shows both men and women consider the face the most important indicator of attraction when it comes to long-term relationships, but when it comes to one-night stands, men are more interested in a woman’s body. Can Adolescent Boys Be Sex Offenders If They Don’t Understand Sex?

This week, two 11-year-old boys, who were sentenced to three years probation for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl, became the youngest sex offenders in Britain.

Yet, it’s not clear whether they “assaulted” the girl or whether all three kids were engaging in the innocent, curious game of “show me yours and I’ll show you mine.” One day last October, the West London girl had come home to tell her mother that two local 10-year-old boys had shoved her off her scooter, pulled her pants down, and then raped her. Though, when questioned by authorities later, she said that she had “been naughty” and didn’t want to tell her mother. The case went to trial and this week the jury found the boys guilty of assault, though the judge gave them a light probation sentence, saying, to the boys, “something went too far” but ” … you didn’t realize how serious what you were doing was.” Keep reading »

A Sports Bra That Works = Finally, I Could Jump For Joy

Scientists are finally working to remedy a problem that has plagued us big-chested ladies since we hit puberty: sports bras don’t really work for us. Most athletic bras have a shelf that is about as effective at holding the twins in place as a band-aid is on a gaping wound, and the bras with cups that do hold things together are painful, circulation-depriving contraptions that make it hard to breathe, let alone jog. Thank God that “breast biomechanics” — I know, awesome name, right? — at the University of Wollongong in Australia have developed a sports bra prototype that supposedly — gasp! — does its job …

8 Things To Do Before Summer Ends

It’s officially past mid-August and somehow there’s still so much I want to do this summer. My husband and I moved apartments in July, which means we were inside many weekend days over the past two months packing/unpacking. Sad! Well, we made it to Coney Island on July 4th for the hot dog-eating contest, to the beach twice and to a Mets game … but I want more summertime fun, so much more. So, to make sure I don’t have any regrets come fall, I’ve made a list of 8 classic summertime thrills to have before Labor Day, if it’s even possible to fit them all in. Check ‘em out, after the jump. Maybe they’ll inspire you to take advantage of the last few dog days of summer, too. Keep reading »
