  • “Expecting what? A child? Good god, what do you think I am, a savage?” That has to be the best-ever reaction to a pushy reporter’s probe about a pregnancy rumor. Happy 86th Birthday, Maya Angelou!

Lookin' Good At 86

Today is the 86th birthday of one of the most beloved writers of our generation, Maya Angelou!  The Wake Forest University professor is perhaps most famous for her 1969 memoir I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, as well as reading a poem at President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration, winning the Pulitzer Prize for one of her poetry collections, and a nomination for an Emmy for her work on the TV series “Roots.” Oh, and let’s not forget the Presidential Medal Of Freedom! Angelou is a lifelong civil rights activist, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, and was the first-ever Black female cable car conductor in San Francisco. She was friends with Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King and James Baldwin and these days is friends with none other than Oprah Winfrey. In memory of her birthday, I poked around YouTube looking for a good video of Angelou reading one of her poems, but I settled on this snippet from “Oprah’s Master Class.” It’s a short, lovely meditation on being human and a reminder why Maya Angelou is a national treasure. Later this month, a group of students in New York City are pioneering a new program called “Good To Go” which would reuse coffee cups around the city. The Brooklyn Roasting Company in DUMBO, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, will begin the program on April 15, when caffeine addicts can drink from a light, reusable cup and then bring it back some other time. The cups will be sanitized before they’re reused on other customers. There is also a possibility of creating perks for coffee drinkers who reuse cups, like waiting in shorter lines similar to a “carpool lane.”  Keep reading »

Awkward: John Edwards Allegedly Got Turned Away From A Funeral

john-edwards-040414

It just gets worse for John Edwards, doesn’t it? First he got busted cheating on his wife and siring a love child. Then his mistress Rielle Hunter, with whom he made a sex tape, turned out to be cuckoo bananas. And now the family of the woman whose presidential campaign donation he allegedly used to financially support Hunter allegedly turned him away from her funeral. Page Six reports that the family of heiress Bunny Mellon, who donated  $700,000 to the Edwards campaign in 2008, were none too pleased when Edwards and his adult daughter Cate showed up to her recent funeral in Virginia. “He was barred from entering,” the gossip page reports, citing NY Social Diary blogger David Patrick Columbia. After he was turned away, Edwards and his daughter watched the funeral onscreen with the “overflow crowd” at a nearby location. He then showed up at the cemetery and “was working the crowd near the graveside after the service,” according to Columbia. While there may be a bit of editorializing on the gossip reporters’ part, do any of us have a difficult time imagining John Edwards fielding dirty looks while he hobnobs with a bunch of old rich folks dressed in black? 25-Year-Old Jon Hamm Promises A Foot Fetishist A “Fabulous Foot Massage” On Cancelled Dating Show

Forgive The Hair, It Was 1996

You know that thing where you feel really, really embarrassed for someone you don’t even know? Where you cringe watching what’s happening to them? Where you squirm instead and think Oh my God I feel so bad for you that this exists? That’s how I feel about this 1996 clip of Jon Hamm on a dating show called “The Big Date.” Self-professed “foot fetishist” Mary needs a “sexy, hot man” who knows how to give a good foot massage.  ”Jon” doesn’t just give a good foot massage, he gives a fabulous foot massage. “The Big Date” has been canceled. But clips of Jon Hamm promising an evening of “fabulosity” live on the Internet forever. [YouTube via BuzzFeed]

Franco was busted sending DMs to Lucy Clode over Instagram in which he asked what hotel she was staying at, and whether he should rent a room. Lucy rejected the actor, then posted his messages online for all to see. [ABC News]

Shirley Manson Is Sick Of “Over-Sexualized Imagery,” Ready For More “Female Provocateurs”

“I feel like there has been such a dearth of female provocateurs over the last decade. It’s been wonderful to watch women dominate the pop charts — to truly dominate — but unfortunately we’ve had to pay a price for that kind of success, which is that the less malleable female musician has really been pushed aside. We haven’t heard a lot from women coming from more of a “punk” ethos, for lack of a better term. So I’m excited to see an underground swell of girls with a lot of attitude and a lot to say. They’re using their intellect as opposed to their assholes. I’m so sick of over-sexualized imagery right now. When women first took it and ran with it it felt very exciting, but now it feels sort of tedious. I want to hear what women have to say as opposed to what they look like in a bikini.”

Shirley Manson spoke to Styleite recently about her favorite makeup brands (MAC, obviously) but also to chat about women in music who inspire her right now. I’m not too surprised that she’s so over the boobs squirting whipped cream and the naked rides on wrecking balls in the current pop landscape. But have hope, Shirley! Go out for all-black mani-pedis with Lorde, or whatever it is that “female provocateurs” do for fun. [Styleite] [Image via Getty]

Women Don’t Apply To “Male-Sounding” Job Postings, Whatever That Means

woman job search
  • A small study of 260 people found that women are deterred by the language in job postings, particularly when “male-sounding” words are used like “aggressive” and “assertive.” Instead, ladies responded to ads using words like “sociable” and “dedicated.” Surprise, surprise, language in job postings didn’t deter dudes at all.
