My Brother Wears A Hoodie Every Day, So I Am Afraid

My Brother Wears A Hoodie Every Day, So I Am Afraid

Whenever issues of young Black masculinity become part of the national discourse, I often make reference to my little brother. As I am not yet a mother, he is my benchmark for how the world treats young Black male bodies. At 25 years old he is 6’2, slender, fair-skinned with a small bit of facial hair and walks through the streets of Chicago and New-York most often in a singular uniform: black jeans, a black or white T-shirt, and a grey hoodie.

It’s a hoodie I bought him last year for Christmas. Like most young millennial boys, my 25 year-old brother lives in the same three items until he literally wears holes in them.  This means on any given day, if it’s cool outside or raining, there he is: jeans, T-shirt, grey hoodie. Read more on Hello Beautiful…

5 Reasons "Fruitvale Station"'s Michael B. Jordan Is The Next "it" Guy

Outside of his charming smile, athletic frame and humble demeanor, Michael B. Jordan proved that he is an incredible acting talent with his Oscar worthy performance in the independent film about the shooting of Oscar Grant, “Fruitvale Station.”

Jordan, widely known for his roles in “The Wire,” “Friday Night Lights” and ” Red Tails,” delivers a sincere depiction of Oscar Grant. And that could partially be attributed to the amazing script, researched and written by equally as young of a lad–Ryan Coogler.

“Fruitvale Station” follows the lead-up events to the day–New Years Day– that Oscar was gunned down in the Bay area while riding the BART by a police officer while under arrest. Camera footage from the event The film won the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and is being praised as a “must-see” for all races and ages. Read more on Hello Beautiful…

Eating disorders are often times associated with specific races, age groups, and even career choices…think white teenage actress/models. But the truth is that eating disorders do not discriminate. According to the National Eating Disorder Association, 10 million American women suffer from eating disorders. This is not a Black v. White epidemic, and it certainly does not only apply to those experiencing puberty. 5 Reasons We Can't Get Enough Of J. Cole

While I’m sure most of you are aware of the North Carolina native’s amazing lyricism and his ability to produce both club bangers and sexy slow jams, few know the real Jermaine Cole — the St. John’s graduate who was raised by a single mother in the small town of Fayetteville, North Carolina. J.Cole is able to strip himself down beyond his rapper persona and relate to his fans. And, that’s one of the reasons what makes his lyrics stand out amongst some of the cliché hip-hop artists that we have in the industry today.
