Diamonds Aren’t A Girl’s Best Friend

Who am I to argue with the Madison Avenue suits who coined the phrase “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”?

If only diamonds were all we believe them to be. The violence resulting from the diamond mining and trading industry is, in a word, tragic. And, as it turns out, diamonds aren’t even as valuable as we’ve been told. Keep reading »

Is Your Scale Lying To You?

Ever step on the scale and have a hard time believing its accuracy? Now, I’m not talking about delusion or denial, but more about the fact that you honestly can’t pinpoint why the scale is reading a three pound increase in your weight. It happens—it happens to all of us, and it can be very confusing, let alone frustrating. Keep reading »

Ten Things I’d Love To Tell My Younger Self

I’ve learned some valuable things about life, love, and being female over the past half-century. Here is the advice I try to pass on to younger women in my life (family and friends) in the hope that it will save them some precious time:

1. You are at least ten times prettier than you think you are.
That holds true no matter how pretty you already think you are! Don’t believe me? Ask your mother/auntie/grannie if she thought she was pretty when she was twenty. She’ll say no. Then find a photo of her at that age. See what I mean? Keep reading »

Give Yourself An Inside Out Self-Love Makeover

I often find myself writing about self-love, simply because I know that that is the key to accomplishing absolutely anything we want in life. Self-love breeds confidence, and once we’re confident, the sky’s the limit! I think that we tend to overcomplicate things, or get “stuck in the muck” of what happened in the past. Keep reading »

The Four Most Common Excuses for Staying Friends with Your Ex

At some point, nearly every woman will have to decide if a breakup means that ties are completely severed with her ex or if they are going to remain friends. Whether your ex is an ex-boyfriend, ex-husband, or somewhere in between, trying to remain friends with your ex is a recipe for disaster. Of course, if you have a child with your ex, you will still see your ex from time to time and you will need to remain civil to one another, but I would still caution against a true friendship with your ex. Do Opposites Really Attract?

You like the movies, and he likes TV. You make the bed, and he steals the covers. You take two steps forward, and he takes two steps back. But you come together because opposites attract. Right? Not exactly. Despite the success of Paula Abdul’s catchy 1989 hit, the complexities of human attraction continue to befuddle the biologists, psychologists, and romantics who dare to ask the perennial questions: why, when, and how are we attracted to people so different from ourselves? Man-Up: How Men Have Made Me Argue Differently

There have been countless books, situation comedies, songs, and even college courses dedicated to the emotional and psychological differences between men and women. By now, it’s even possible that the similarities between men and women are teetering dangerously on the edge of indicating we’re two completely different species all together. We have completely different outlooks on sex, cars, kids, taking out the garbage, food, clothes, driving, directions, dogs, shoes, money—you name it. But lately, I feel like I have made a sneaky sort of discovery that laughs in the face of Men Are from Mars, Women Are From Venus; male behavior can rub off on women, and it might even improve us. Gaming Gore: Four Non-Violent Video Games

Whoever said that gaming was a guy thing obviously never met the ten-year-old me. Forget Barbie—I was in love with my Nintendo, along with Paperboy, Tetris, and Super Mario 3. I was obsessed with video games, and constantly exasperated my mother by refusing to go to bed until I got through just one more level of Dr. Mario. Keep reading »
