Myrlie Evers-Williams Is The First Woman To Deliver Presidential Inaugural Invocation

Myrlie Evers-Williams is the widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Myrlie recounts meeting her husband and how he brought racial empowerment into her life. She also spoke about how they lived in constant fear because what they were doing at the the time – fighting for equality – could cost them their lives as it had already cost the lives of many.

“In 1963 Medgar Evans was shot to death by a white supremacist named Byron De La Beckwith. Beckwith was arrested and brought to trial but two all-white juries were unable to reach a verdict. Myrlie fought to bring her husband’s killer to justice for three decades and Beckwith was finally arrested again and convicted by a multi-racial jury in 1994.” Read more …

10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About The Sundance Film Festival

If you’re like me, you really have a very vague idea of what the Sundance Film Festival is actually like. In my head I pictured a massive amount of hipsters congregating to watch odd films that the average person cannot comprehend, all while taking breaks to toke it up outside and annoy the natives of Park City (while maybe running into a celeb or two). After researching for this list, I’m pretty sure that most of that is still true, but I’ve collected a few tidbits that legitimize the festival’s artistic and social standing a little more (even though I still think the films are a little weird). Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about the Sundance Film Festival. Read more…

Wrangler’s New Moisturizing Jeans Want To Make Your Butt Soft And Smooth

I love trying out new fashion trends but, let’s be honest. I have no idea what to think of this one. Wrangler is launching a new pair of jeans that “moisturize” your butt. The Denim Spa jeans come in three different moisturizing levels- Aloe Vera, Olive Extract, and Smooth Legs, and they claim to help prevent cellulite. The moisturizers supposedly contain “the hydrating properties of natural oils and butters” with such exotic ingredients as monoi de Tahiti? Never heard of that one until now…

This raises so many questions in my mind, and I feel have no answer for them right now. My first question is, how exactly does this “contraption” work? Does the cloth like continuously spray the aloe vera? Also, wouldn’t it feel kinda weird/ be difficult to get your jeans on over your underwear? Read more…

10 New Completely Ridiculous Reality TV Series

Reality TV is notorious for exploiting people’s prejudices. Whether that be cultural stereotypes about people of color, teenagers, people who live in certain parts of the countries or women – reality TV loves to sink to the lowest of the lows. Unfortunately, watching them is just about everyone’s guilty pleasure (including my own). The more ridiculous the better usually and if the people are old enough and cognizant enough to recognize what’s happening then I guess it can’t be so bad. This year is bring us a slew of terribly-terrific reality TV. From “Fat Girl Revenge,” a show about formerly large women seeking vengeance on their haters, to “All My Baby’s Mamas,” a show about Shawty Lo and the 10 women who birthed his 11 children. 2013, guys, it’s going to be a good year. Read more…

The 12 Best, Most Accurate Movies About Life In Your 20s

Your 20s are a pretty important and crazy decade of your life. No longer a teenager, you’ve entered official “adult” territory. It’s the decade of evolving responsibility. Your brain fully finishes developing, basically making your neural structure, and thus every other structure of you, set for a while. Men reach their sexual peak. Your body begins to burn fat less quickly. Multiple all-nighters become a thing of the past and hangovers more common after an amount of drinking you used to not even need a glass of water to counter.

But as you’re changing, so do the movies about you. Gone are the sweet stories of innocent teenagers whose entire world is high school or even college. John Hughes no longer applies to you. No, in your 20s you’re part of a bigger world, the so-called “real” world, and those microcosmic tales no longer seem as relateable. The doe-eyed ugly duckling story is less resonant. The young prodigy destined for greatness is a pipe dream you’ve outgrown. So where do you turn? What movies best reflect your emotional, financial, and bodily changes? Well, here’s a few I’d recommend. Read more…

10 Authors Who Wrote Books Before Turning 21

I’m currently 21 and I’m contemplating pursuing a career in writing. The problem is that I don’t write as much as I should, and I doubt the quality of what I do write. But then I realized that there are people out there who write and create regardless of their age. Through some searching around, I was able to find authors who were published by the time they were 21 or wrote books while they were teens. Hopefully, they serve as a source of inspiration for you as well. Read more…
