Chances are you’ve seen it. In my completely unsubstantiated estimation, it’s been pinned more than any other cocktail in the history of Pinterest: the “Sneaky Beach Cocktail.” And while I appreciate the ingenuity of hiding booze in a Simply Lemonade bottle, I feel that the recipe — pink lemonade, strawberries, watermelon vodka, and coconut rum — leaves something to be desired.
Nothing against those who like their cocktails on the sweet side, but I want to taste my ethanol. Alas, the summer months can be tricky if you love darker spirits and heavier brews. The perfect summer beverage should be refreshing, a little sweet, and cold, but you shouldn’t have to suffer through cloying cocktails filled with flavored vodkas and Crystal Light. You should be able to taste your drink and know it’s for the over-21 crowd, even if it’s served with a tiny umbrella.
Here are my top three favorite beverages to imbibe in when the temperatures soar. I suggest you make it a point to try them all before summer is up! Keep reading »
In my mind, I am someone who can float through life, all free-spirited like, taking impromptu trips and just going with the flow. I envision myself as the type of person who can truly make it through the weekend with only a weekender bag. I’m the girl that can grab a towel and a bottle of SPF and head to the beach for a day of fun and sand. In reality, nothing is further from the truth.

I’ve had to accept that I’m neither free-spirited nor beach-loving. Alas, living in Florida means that a lot of socializing happens al fresco, and I’m not going to miss a party just because sand is aggravating. In short, I am going to have fun in spite of myself because, while I do not enjoy the beach, some of my friends and family do. I’ve learned, though, that tolerating the beach is not something I can wing. Preparation is key, as is setting realistic expectations for oneself, and knowing that I need to plan has helped me create a kit for enjoying the beach even though it’s not really my thing: Keep reading »
It’s Christmas time, aka that time of year when I see a million Facebook statuses about “Love Actually.” It’s fine. I get it. I enjoy that movie. I love Rickman’s voice and Hugh Grant’s sweet moves and Bill Nighy’s existence. This year also marks the movie’s ten-year anniversary. A DECADE. Did you know that the adorable drumming orphan is now on Game of Thrones?
So in honor of this momentous anniversary, I am going to come clean and share some real feelings with you:
I do not like the Juliet-Peter-Mark love triangle plot (aka the one with Keira Knightley). In fact, I strongly dislike it and find it awkward and not really romantic.
What now. Keep reading »
