What You Should Know About Sunburns

With the July 4th holiday weekend almost here, it’s time to address the beauty issue that no one really wants to think about but is always a possibility: sunburn. We fully advocate using sunscreen on a daily basis, but unfortunately, sometimes those rays get the best of us and turn delicate skin bright red. In an effort to save our skin from the terrible pain that sunburn causes, here are a few tips on how to deal with the blistering pain, before and after the burn takes hold. Keep reading »

How Much Will You Spend On Shoes In A Lifetime?

How much would you guess that you spend on shoes in a year? What about a lifetime? Here are the cold, hard facts: According to a recent study, women will shell out about $24,000 on shoes during their entire life. While you regain your resting heart rate after that shocker, here’s a little breakdown on just how you’ll dish out that much money on shoes alone. Say each pair of shoes costs $52, and estimate that between sandals for summer, heels for work, boots for winter, and occasional special events such as weddings, you’ll accumulate about seven new pairs a year. Multiple that times 67 years of shoe buying, and there goes those 240 hundred dollar bills. Obviously, this number is dependent on your penchant for cheap versus expensive shoes — and if you’re a Louboutin lover, that number’s bound to be thousands of dollars higher. Given my current shoe rack is overflowing with about 30 pairs of heels, flats, wedges, and sandals (not to mention my boot closet), I think it’s safe to say I’ll hit the estimated number, much to the dismay of my boyfriend who just doesn’t get my addiction. I’m Not A (Clean) Plastic Bag

Hopefully by now, everyone’s invested in a few reusable totes for grocery trips instead of ruining the environment with plastic bags. But while you’re being all green and eco-friendly, it’s important to remember that between schlepping groceries, gym clothes, and random finds around town, more than a few germs have most likely found their way inside that tote bag. A recent study tested 84 bags from shoppers in Tucson, LA, and SF and found that 12% contained e. coli and over half held other harmful bacteria. Sounds pretty shocking, but when you think about it, this really shouldn’t be news, especially if you’re dumping raw meat inside those canvas bags. Multiply that by the amount of years you’ve owned your eco-friendly bag, and that’s months of bacteria just festering at the bottom. Sufficiently grossed out? We suggest you get to laundering. Maria Sharapova Unleashes Her Inner Water Baby

In order to keep the momentum going from their roller baby video, Evian selected six individuals, including Maria Sharapova, to pose in T-shirts with baby bodies emblazoned on the front. To be honest, I’m a little creeped out by this image of the tennis star. She’s wearing a baby body as a T-shirt! How is that not weird? And who thought this was a good idea? While the shirt is totally odd, and surely not an item most people would ever wear, Evian’s motivation is something I can get behind. According to the H2O brand, youth is a mindset and lifestyle, so their Live Young campaign embraces the inner child in everyone. I’m a huge fan of water and the idea of staying young, but I just wish Evian took a second to realize no one wants to walk around with a huge picture of a baby’s body on their shirt. The Internet Wants To Help Save Your Skin

We know the rules: wear sunscreen, get regular checkups from the dermatologist, and watch your skin for signs of oddly shaped moles. But let’s be honest. There are days you go without sunscreen, having no insurance can make regular visits to the derm difficult, and sometimes distinguishing the difference between the shape of a mole one day versus a month later is impossible. SkinOfMine.com is here to save you from those very skin woes. Simply upload a picture of yourself or specific moles to the website, track their changes over time by uploading newer images, and — should you need it — forward the pictures to a dermatologist for further advice. You’ll be able to easily view the difference in shape and size without wondering, Did that mole grow? or Was that there before? Keep reading »

J.Crew Gets Romantic

Here’s an interesting twist on movie wardrobes and retailer catalogues. For the upcoming film, “The Romantics,” it seems the fashion stylist went a little crazy at J.Crew and outfitted the wardrobe closet with a massive amount of the brand’s offerings. [Drooooooool. -- Editor Amelia, J. Crew Addict] In a sign of appreciation, not to mention a great marketing strategy, J.Crew decided to become a little bit creative and hired a new set of models for their Fall 2010 catalogue — in the form of the film’s celebrities. Malin Akerman, Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin, Adam Brody, and Katie Holmes got together yesterday to pose for the upcoming catalogue, promoting not only J.Crew, but also their new film, which comes out later this year.
